Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heaveâ€, “haulâ€, and “bound†away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.

A suite of short pieces for solo guitar intended to capture a unique yet popular idiosyncratic sound. Some of these are new works, some have been re-worked from older ideas. They all incorporate the idea of popular rock style guitar music being combined with standard classical guitar technique and notation.Andante Tremolo creates an eerie yet nostalgic mood with a sixteenth note tremolo figure at the beginning that bursts into a middle section utilizing pull offs to open strings and a more rapid tremolo. It features a descending melodic figure that leads to nowhere... Anniversary Theme is a half-remembered hum-along melody at the end of the formal celebration when the chairs are being put away but the decorations are still up. It uses simple harmonies that don't really make sense but just follow that same half-forgotten melody, cadencing here and there when they feel like it. Cloudburst Arpeggio focuses on the chime-like campanella effect produced by a descending slur pulled-off to an open string, and then hammering it back on again. It begins with a straight-ahead arpeggio pattern going through a standard chord change, and then jumps off the edge of the cliff into other areas...Mobile is a perpetual motion machine that rocks its way into an Arabic sounding riff in the middle. The low D tuning allows utilization of a drone on the high open D string that produces interesting sonic effects allowing for unique sounds to pull off to open strings.

The Ballad of William Taylor (or Willy Taylor), Bold William Taylor or The Female Lieutenant (as it is sometimes called) tells the story of a woman who is deserted on her wedding day by William Taylor because he has been pressed ganged and sent away to sea. She decides to follow after him and disguises herself as a man in order to sign up. Her identity is discovered when her tunic bursts open during a battle revealing her womanhood! She tells the Captain she is looking for William Taylor and he tells her where to find him. However, William Taylor has found a new lady. Clearly upset that William Taylor has forgotten her so easily our heroine draws a pair of pistols and dispatches both her disloyal lover and his new lady! In some versions the Captain is so impressed with her that he either marries her himself or makes her a ship’s commander or both! In this arrangement for SSA the middle voice is always on the tune in the verses whereas the higher and lower harmony voices either sing the melody or their harmony part. It is important these counter- melodies do not overpower the tune and the words otherwise the story is lost. Try to bring out the melody in the chorus. In fact you might like to try having all the voices on the melody for the first chorus to establish it. Also works with mixed voices by adding men to the alto part for the verses and the melody line for the chorus. Silent Night arranged for piano trio (piano, violin & cello). The final verse features a re-harmonization of the melody. Silent Night Origins Father Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics for a new Christmas Carol. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to go with the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous of all Christmas carols – Silent Night. First Performance Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs, or to make sure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Mohr played the guitar, and both Mohr and Gruber gave the world premiere performance at the Christmas Eve Mass in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf in Salzburg. Original Score Eventually, the original score became lost, and consequently, Mohr's name was largely forgotten. Though the public originally recognized Gruber as the composer, many people over time began rumors that a more famous composer was responsible. Thus, they floated the names of Haydn, Mozart, and even Beethoven. Authorities eventually settled the matter when a manuscript in Mohr’s handwriting turned up in 1820. Consequently, we learn that Mohr wrote the lyrics in 1816, and Gruber composed the melody in 1818. Popularity Nonetheless, Silent Night is still very popular. He wanted the new carol for his Christmas Eve Mass. With only a couple of hours until the service, He asked organist and schoolteacher Franz Gruber to write a melody and simple accompaniment to accompany the lyrics. The result is probably the most famous Christmas carols – Silent Night. First Performance Perhaps because the organ was undergoing repairs or to ensure the accompaniment was easy enough, Mohr asked Gruber to write it for the guitar. Danse Noble is an elegant little piece that began life as a work for piano. The alto and tenor saxes trade melody and counter melody statements while the bari sax provides a quiet bass line. The arrangement for saxophone trio is raised one semi-tone from the original key of A to B flat. A good choice for an intermediate group of players. Moderate tempo in 3/4 time with a middle section slightly faster in the parallel minor key. The parts are very independent. Performance time is about 3.5 minutes.  The late 19th century French composer Émile Paladilhe is mostly forgotten today but in his time was well respected and admired. His works were performed throughout the concert halls and opera stages of Europe. Today singers remember him for a few of songs and oboists for his “Solo for Oboe†also known as “Concertanteâ€. Sax players may know that piece too. A transcription is included in the widely available Concert and Contest Collection for Alto Saxophone.
