Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1362819). Robert Schumann, Four Sketches, Op. 58 were composed for the pedal-board piano in 1845. He and his wife Clara rented a pedal-board piano, which is an upright grand piano with an organ-like pedal-board played by the performer's feet primarily for the bass line. Thus, organ works could be practiced on this now mostly extinct instrument. He and Clara spent many hours practicing the revered organ works of Bach on this instrument.Robert Coulter has marvelously arranged these little-known works for Brass Quintet, suitable for advanced performers. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C, Horn, Trombone and Tuba. The Four Sketches are about 14 minutes in length.

Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935) was a Russian composer who studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and later was the director for the Moscow Conservatory for many years. His most famous compostion, Procession of the Sardar, is the fourth movement of his 'Caucasian Sketches' for orchestra, which was inspired by the folk music of the Caucasas mountain region. Arranged here for Brass Quintet, the exotic eastern scales and colorful percussion parts will add a touch of mystery and adventure to your next concert program. ( Duration - 3:40 )Â

It will need at least a 1st section band to handle the last movement. This might be a good piece to use in an entertainments contest. There is quite a bit for the percussion to do which took some doing as the original had none. The four movements represent my thoughts about Canada and its people. 1. March for the Frontiersmen: Canada has a lot of wilderness that has not been spoiled by man. This movement represents the rugged frontiersmen pushing through the Canadian forests. 2. The Great White Cold: I imagined the bitter freezing cold and icy beauty of Canadian winters (not that I have ever experienced such) and I used some slightly unusual techniques to create the impression of a cold wind blowing across the arctic scenery. 3. Campfire Songs: I had this vision of the great outdoors with Canadian families going camping in the mountainous regions sitting round their campfire at night and singing songs. I had no idea at the time whether Canadians were campfire songsters or what kinds of songs they might choose, so I selected a number of ’folk’ songs from the Great Canadian Tune Book and incorporated them into this movement. 4. The New Found Land: This movement moves to Canada’s eastern seaboard and I imagined new emigrants to the country arriving at a busy harbour and seeing all the hustle and bustle of a lively community and sea port. With some difficulty the debarkees find their land legs but then become absorbed in the lively new world to which they have moved.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998893). This sixth and final piece in the series of 'Mosaic' works is written for solo tuba. As in the other Mosaic works (all available via Sheet Music Plus), a series of early, unrelated sketches were reworked to create this piece. Mosaic VI continues the preoccupation with arch form. It features and juxtaposes six highly contrasting ideas. The first theme explores snap rhythms as well as semitone and tone steps. The second idea is a chromatic and jaunty 6/8 scherzando, followed by a modal third theme in 2/2. A fourth theme explores rhythmic displacement, as well as fast octatonic scales, while a major key fifth idea is more conventionally song-like. The final, striding sixth theme is then followed by varied recollections of the previous themes in reverse, adhering to the arch-like structure of the work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for advanced tuba players.
