Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862579). 2015 Piano Contest This final movement is based on a concept in atonal music called The Parsimony of Voice-leading. It uses the idea that there can be only one voice or chord-tone that shifts from one iteration or segment to the next. Thus this piece used small variations on simple five-finger positions that are juxtaposed against each other, with the variations being only one note from one to the next within s section, that section to be followed by another set of similar motions, but on a different keyboard shape. The melody is derived from the content of the five-note group below it, often as dyads with an added 1/2 step. Duration about 3 mins. Lots of motion and crunch, like a good musical snack! MP3 MIDI audio. Advanced level at tempo, but Intermediate at a slower pace. MBB.

This is a four movement piano sonata I composed in a more traditional style with a little bit of modern twists. Each movement of this piece describes the four beauties of nature that the Japanese use meaning to observe nature and discover yourself: Flowers, Birds, Wind and Moon. The first movement is titled Wind which is conveyed by the fast scale moving sixteenth notes sounding throughout the movement. This second movement is titled Moon which is conveyed by the Chopin Nocturne style accompaniment that's present throughout the movement. This third movement is titled Flowers which is a Minuet & Trio. Basically, this movement has a light graceful musical style played throughout with a moderate tempo. This four-movement suite is designed to be a modest challenge for the advanced pianist and utilizes techniques associated with 21st century music, yet in a decidedly tonal and accessible form. Each of the four movements, while utilizing the same quartal- and quintal-based harmonic language, has a unique feel. The movements are as follows:I. SKAThis movement draws its rhythm and form from Jamaican ska music of the 1960s, but it is also imbued with a sense of chaos and panic contrary to the relaxed feel of its namesake. It demands rhythmic fluidity and precise hand placement, but rhythmically, it is the simplest of the four movements.II. BERCEUSEThis movement draws its inspiration from the lullabies of Chopin and Liszt, yet subverts the expectations given by its name considerably. Dark, mysterious, and suspenseful harmonies contrast over the sweet rocking motions of the rhythm before giving way to a stormy climax before the piece fades back to its original theme. In contrast to the almost mechanical nature of the first movement, this movement is overly expressive and lyrical, even during its most turbulent sections.III. MARCHA playful reference to the marches of John Philip Sousa, this movement makes rhythmic references to a few different pieces, including Fairest of the Fair. It is a return of sorts to the chaotic atmosphere of the first movement, and it ends rather abruptly, providing a sense of suspense before the final movement.IV. TOCCATAThe longest and most complex of the movements, Toccata combines the tonal and harmonic structures of the first three movements with complicated, syncopated rhythms and unusual time signatures. A number of themes are manipulated via augmentation, inversion, retrograde, and diminution, and abrupt changes in texture and tempo grab the listener's attention.

It is my hope that this piece, with its brisk tempo, serves as a lively opening to the collection, showcasing the pianist's skill and the intricate counterpoint I aimed to achieve.Fugue No. 2 in B-flat Major (Andante):The second fugue, marked Andante with a duration of 02:25, introduces a contemplative mood in the key of B-flat major. In my modest attempt, this piece invites the listener to reflect and explore a more introspective side, providing a gentle contrast to the preceding fugue.Fugue No. 3 in A Major (Adagio):With a deliberate pace of 02:57 and an Adagio tempo, the third fugue in A major emphasizes melody and expression. My humble intention was to create a serene and emotional landscape, allowing the listener to experience a deeper connection with the music.Fugue No. 4 in D Major (Allegretto):The final fugue, an Allegretto in D major, lasts a mere 01:40. In a departure from convention, I introduced an Eastern or oriental scale, aiming to infuse the composition with a unique character. It is my modest hope that this unexpected touch adds a distinctive flavor to the overall work.Program Notes:As I share Fugues Op. 17, I am mindful of the privilege of having my compositions interpreted by talented performers. My sincere aspiration was to create a humble collection that weaves together varied emotions and styles. The inclusion of a melodic third fugue and the exoticism of the fourth fugue seeks to expand the tonal palette modestly.
