For James: a kind of lullaby (1993)Built in 1898 the James Monaghan Mansion--now, and since 1942 the home of Gonzaga University's music department--was for many years believed to be haunted. In addition to reports of disembodied footsteps, doors dramatically opening themselves, and sudden appearances of hostile presences, there was also reports of the organ playing itself......which is where I, primarily an organ student at the time, spent a majority of my time. This piece was written entirely at the organ, on that organ while an organ and piano student at Gonzaga. Written in four layers as if for organ, in the end I found that it sounded much better on the piano. It has never been performed or recorded on organ.The working title was Excorsising Monaghan. Â The finished piece sounded less ghostly and more like a lullaby. Whether or not it was James doing the haunting, I thought it best to offer the lullaby to him.--Bill Whitley, 2023.

Brass Band. 185 pages. Lyons Music Services #46377. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767031). This is an arrangement for Brass Band of my Flute Octet of the same name. It will need at least a 1st section band to handle the last movement. This might be a good piece to use in an entertainments contest. There is quite a bit for the percussion to do which took some doing as the original had none. The four movements represent my thoughts about Canada and its people. 1. March for the Frontiersmen: Canada has a lot of wilderness that has not been spoiled by man. This movement represents the rugged frontiersmen pushing through the Canadian forests. 2. The Great White Cold: I imagined the bitter freezing cold and icy beauty of Canadian winters (not that I have ever experienced such) and I used some slightly unusual techniques to create the impression of a cold wind blowing across the arctic scenery. 3. Campfire Songs: I had this vision of the great outdoors with Canadian families going camping in the mountainous regions sitting round their campfire at night and singing songs. I had no idea at the time whether Canadians were campfire songsters or what kinds of songs they might choose, so I selected a number of ’folk’ songs from the Great Canadian Tune Book and incorporated them into this movement. 4. The New Found Land: This movement moves to Canada’s eastern seaboard and I imagined new emigrants to the country arriving at a busy harbour and seeing all the hustle and bustle of a lively community and sea port. With some difficulty the debarkees find their land legs but then become absorbed in the lively new world to which they have moved.

Amen.The opening has the four parts in slow-moving homophonic chords, with at least two parts staying the same between each pair of chords, so it's very easy to stay in tune and find your note. Today, tonight and evermore is set as a 4-part canon, simple to pick up and not going too high or low, which develops back to a final Amen where the slow chordal shifts return. Entirely diatonic with no accidentals, but sounds fresh and more difficult than it actually is!This piece is SATB, no divisi, and should be suitable for most sacred occasions. It can be sung a cappella, or with light piano/organ doubling.Ranges:soprano Db4 to F5alto Ab3 to Db5tenor Db3 to Db4bass Gb2 to Db4.

ISBN 9790570485277.'Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour' Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour was composed in autumn 2016, Eastbourne, and is inspired by my childhood in Doune, Perthshire; as well as the Ceilidhs and Feis (cultural festival in the Highlands) my daughter, Clara, and I were immersed in when we lived in the picturesque village of Kingussie, Badenoch and Strathspey. The four dances are a celebration of my love and nostalgia for Scotland, and an expression of my family's Scottish memories. Each dance comes with a quote from my favourite poet, Robert Burns, whose insightful and sensitive observations are a poignant appreciation of everyday life. Why the reference to Scottish food? Because this piece is dedicated to my father, Papou, who appreciates a merry supper. The 1st Movement, 'To the Mighty Haggis', is a Strathspey with its characteristic Scotch snap -a short-long rhythm, as if saying the word 'haggis'; which is fitting as the Scottish bard's quote comes from his poem Address to a Haggis, traditionally said on Burns' Night. The 2nd Movement, 'The Humble Shortbread', is a Reel; as is usually the case in Scottish dances. It should be played with a slightly 'snappy', swung rhythm. 'What though on homely fare we dine, [...] A man is a man for all that' comes from my favourite Burns' poem: A Man's a Man for A' That. And who doesn't enjoy the humble shortbread? There is a more reflective, nostalgic mood to the 3rd Movement, 'Ode to the Homely (salty) Porridge'. The Air is a reminiscence of the quiet evenings Clara and I would spend in Kingussie, with our view of the beautifully haunting mountains. 'What will I get to my supper, [...] Ye'se get a panfu' o' plumpin parridge' comes from Burns' The Shepherd's Wife who tries to entice her husband back home with the promise of porridge (the Scottish way: with salt). Finally, the 4th Movement, 'Too Many Drams of Whisky', is a cheerful and lively Jig. It's the convivial merriness of being with friends and family, maybe at a Ceilidh, with a wink to Scotland's 'water of life'. 'We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne' comes from Burns' famous Auld Lang Syne: a fitting end to our musical and culinary tour of Scotland.

Published by Frederick Naftel (A0.987079). My 2nd String Quartet was composed during the current Coronavirus pandemic and its style is definitely affected by this period. I would describe the music as a strong statement of mind. In complete contrast to my relatively straightforward 1st Quartet, which is in 4 movements, the present work is in one uninterrupted movement, divided into five parts, with an epilogue. The intervals of the major 7th and minor 2nd are a strong feature of the music, which contrasts intensely static passages, which are nevertheless uneasily tranquil, with furious and violent sections, often marked triple forte in certain passages. The opening Lento flows serenely but mysteriously as if awaiting some kind of resolution, using motifs rather than fully-fledged themes(of which there are very few). The viola makes an urgent and violent protest, later to be imitated by cello, as if to disrupt the serenity, until the second section bursts in with barely-controlled energy and fury. This Allegro feroce is strongly accented and relentless in its forward momentum, the tension manintained almost throughout until the music suddenly quietens down, pizzicato passages leading to the next section. The Adagio Sostenuto initially resembles plainsong, all four instruments in unison(muted) playing a smooth line which rises and falls, the dynamics remaining pp and senza vibrato. The line breaks into harmony based on the interval of a perfect 5th, eventually leading to a passage reminiscent of the very opening of the work. A brief crescendo leads to another quiet unison passage which becomes more fragmented and unsettled, first and second violins announcing an aggressive idea which becomes the initial impetus for the fourth section. This Presto Furioso is even more violently energetic than the second section and at one point, alternates between 3/8 and 4/8, making the music sound even more unsettled. This is music with a strong sense of purpose as well as absolute fury. After a very short scalic passage, the final section begins Grave and pp with a sustained unison C, growing in power with exaggerated vibrato to a series of crunching discords and a wildly disconcerting episode featuring swirling upper strings and impassioned cello solo. The music dies away to the Epilogue. The concluding part of the work calls for a recorded cello playing a pizzicato pedal, over which violins and viola play a series of overlapping (tonal) triads, giving the music a slightly warmer but still mysterious sound. The recorded cello’s pedal notes slow down until a final powerful discord from the 4 instruments dies away, leaving the sighing motif of the very opening of the work to have the last word. Composed between the 21st July & the 18th October 2021, my 3rd Symphony, at around 34 minutes in duration, is the longest of my three symphonies to date & my most substantial purely orchestral score. The Symphony is in four movements following a fast-slow-fast-slow format. It is a dark probing & at times disturbing score. The Symphony makes much use of the very dark Locrian mode with its prominent diminished 5th (tritone). The 1st movement is angry & driven with a swirling energy. The 2nd movement is a kind of sad processional which builds to protesting battering climax before ending in a sense of resignation. The 3rd movement marked 'with malice' ranges from a sense of waspish humour to downright arrogant brutallity. The slow 4th movement is the longest movement, the opening hinting at two works by Wagner & Holst. The movement has a sense of questioning & searching, perhaps a single word 'why?' sums the movement up & to some extent the Symphony too. Parts are available upon request.

It's also kind of cool how people can watch my progress as I improve as a composer over time. I hope you enjoy this one. I think this is my best work so far, but I'm curious what others think! Inspiration for this piece came from the Rondo in Mozart's Concerto in E Flat for two pianos and his Finale in Symphony 40 (which I think is a Rondo as well), and all the Bach harpsichord concertos. Why is the cadenza in the style of a Bolero, I hear you ask? Well, it's hinting at a future work. With this Sonata, I set the intention of four movements: sonata-allegro, minuet/trio, funeral march, rondo. For the next work, the intention is a Latin Suite which will consist of a romance, tango, and milonga. That may change, but that's my idea so far and I didn't want to forget that theme...so I put it in the cadenza of this sonata! I will record a more live version of the full sonata on one of the University Of Victoria's Steinways soon. My dream is to write for orchestra, but for now I'll be using piano works as practice and maybe, just maybe, one day I'll find a way to compose for orchestra. I used to want to write for film but I'm now realizing I may want to write for the classical world, instead. This would be an absolute dream come true. Thank you, Gabe.

Organ Symphony No. 7 'Von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit' is dominated by the theme of 'time': from the flowing rumbling of time in ancient beginnings ('In principio' - 1st movement) and periodic to the intellectually incomprehensible revolving ('Zeit der Sterne' - 2nd movement). After the third movement ('Zeit des Menschen'), a valse triste, infused by an almost humorous hectic atmosphere, the symphony ends with a kind of 'Amen!' in the fourth movement. Schneider sums it up: 'It is good as it is, we do not understand the course of time anyway.' With regard to style, his composition is based on elements of minimal music which he combines with the tradition of the European organ composition; it is at the same time a testimony to the composer's flexibility and versatility.

The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). These Rags are terrific! They are harmonically and musically interesting, introduce a style to the students with which they may be unfamiliar yet has a "jazzy" feel, and are simple enough in range, rhythm and length (they're relatively brief) to be approachable to the intermediate student - a level at which one often needs interesting music to keep them going! - and above. I had one student who is versed in jazz (plays jazz trumpet) who tried to swing these, so I had the opportunity to work with him on how Rags differ from "swung" jazz, which was kind of fun. I feel these duets fill a need in the modern flute studio, and recommend them highly. Something to Rag about - for students & performers a-like! By Em on November 16, 2013 This 12-piece book is a delightful introduction to ragtime for flutists, who usually don't get the chance to play much jazz or "rag" music. What I perhaps enjoy most about the book is, the 2nd flute part has many chances for nice melodic interplay or fun walking bass lines to accompany the 1st flute. (Unlike many duet books that have a rather stagnant bass line for the 2nd flute/accompaniment.) If you are playing with students who are new to the territory, it is a great book to have them develop an ear for jazz chords. You'll need to review how to swing eighths, since that isn't covered here --it's for Intermediate players after all :). The lines should not be incredibly challenging though, and it is presented in such a way that whether up or down tempo, it's still fun to play. I did like playing most of the pieces up-tempo, though! My top favorite pieces are #5- "Forget-Me-Not", #6 - "Cotton Candy Rag", #11 - "High Country Stomp" (it's nice got a nice lilting feel) and #12- "Green Mountain Saunter." There is a great variety, and each piece has a memorable melody. Grab a flutist friend and play these! If you like to have up-beat and playful tunes (especially during these cold winter months) these will warm you up real fast. It offers studies of syncopated rhythms in 4/4 and 12/8. The 12/8 duets support improvement in the student’s triple feel. Also, the changes in meter challenge and support the enhanced reading skills of the student. Furthermore, the chromatic tones offer stylistic colors to the student’s assortment of fingering patterns. Students using the book had a positive response to the melodic content: it was fun to play—a breath of fresh air.Thank you for bringing your book to my attention. We await set two. Phyllis G. E. on November 7, 2013 This is Intermediate level music, it can satisfy several levels of players, and altho rags come over stylistically the same , these are varied enough . Except for mostly using flat key signatures, and having some confusion in finding your way around repeats and da capos, these are pleasant little works, some of which would make nice concert encores. The only feature I as a performer corrected when my friend and I played them thru was to 8 va some of the too low 2nd parts.
