Cello Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.549259 Composed by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Individual part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3479669. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549259). I. Moderato, II. Lento misterioso, III. Rondo Spirito The Moderato unfolds in the standard sonata-allegro form. It explores some divergent elements: a lyrical Dorian principal theme, a terse Phrygian subordinate theme subjected to extreme compression in an asymmetrical meter, and a brief closing theme - again in Dorian. The development section presents fragmented variations of the themes and a new theme essentially extracted from the transition. The recapitulation proceeds as usual, with the secondary theme appearing in tonic - in this case, G Dorian. The principal theme's final statements appear in the closing theme's rhythm. A coda based on a fragment of the closing theme ends the movement. The Lento misterioso is an elegiac ternary construction that introduces quartal/quintal harmony and modal exploration. The contrasting B section involves an agitato passage that investigates Phrygian relations. The Rondo Spirito is a simple Rondo: ABACABA. The impetus of the movement derives from elements of the previous two movements: quartal/quintal harmony from the Lento and asymmetrical meter from the Moderato. Other elements appearing in this piece are cycles of thirds, modal explorations, and extended range. Â

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - SKU: A0.987079 Composed by Frederick Paul Naftel. Contemporary. Score and parts. 41 pages. Frederick Naftel #6255501. Published by Frederick Naftel (A0.987079). My 2nd String Quartet was composed during the current Coronavirus pandemic and its style is definitely affected by this period. I would describe the music as a strong statement of mind. In complete contrast to my relatively straightforward 1st Quartet, which is in 4 movements, the present work is in one uninterrupted movement, divided into five parts, with an epilogue. The intervals of the major 7th and minor 2nd are a strong feature of the music, which contrasts intensely static passages, which are nevertheless uneasily tranquil, with furious and violent sections, often marked triple forte in certain passages. The opening Lento flows serenely but mysteriously as if awaiting some kind of resolution, using motifs rather than fully-fledged themes(of which there are very few). The viola makes an urgent and violent protest, later to be imitated by cello, as if to disrupt the serenity, until the second section bursts in with barely-controlled energy and fury. This Allegro feroce is strongly accented and relentless in its forward momentum, the tension manintained almost throughout until the music suddenly quietens down, pizzicato passages leading to the next section. The Adagio Sostenuto initially resembles plainsong, all four instruments in unison(muted) playing a smooth line which rises and falls, the dynamics remaining pp and senza vibrato. The line breaks into harmony based on the interval of a perfect 5th, eventually leading to a passage reminiscent of the very opening of the work. A brief crescendo leads to another quiet unison passage which becomes more fragmented and unsettled, first and second violins announcing an aggressive idea which becomes the initial impetus for the fourth section. This Presto Furioso is even more violently energetic than the second section and at one point, alternates between 3/8 and 4/8, making the music sound even more unsettled. This is music with a strong sense of purpose as well as absolute fury. After a very short scalic passage, the final section begins Grave and pp with a sustained unison C, growing in power with exaggerated vibrato to a series of crunching discords and a wildly disconcerting episode featuring swirling upper strings and impassioned cello solo. The music dies away to the Epilogue. The concluding part of the work calls for a recorded cello playing a pizzicato pedal, over which violins and viola play a series of overlapping (tonal) triads, giving the music a slightly warmer but still mysterious sound. The recorded cello’s pedal notes slow down until a final powerful discord from the 4 instruments dies away, leaving the sighing motif of the very opening of the work to have the last word. This note may be reprinted in programmes with the following details: (c) 2020 Frederick Naftel

Guitar - Advanced - SKU: ZZ.DZ-4244 Composed by Konstantin Bliokh. Score. 13 pages. Les Productions d'OZ - Digital #DZ 4244. Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-4244). Sonata No. 6 Kharkiv for guitar solo was composed in 2021, in the end of the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations. The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down. The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions. The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.

While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert.Bagatelle No. 7 of Beethoven's Op. 33 is a charming and playful piece, typical of Beethoven's early style. The piece is in A-flat major and marked Presto, which means fast. The main theme is catchy, fragmentary, and light, with a playful character that is maintained throughout the piece. The middle section is more lyrical and expressive, providing a sostenuto contrast to the playful character of the main theme. The piece is well-crafted and attractive. Overall, Bagatelle No. 7 is a delightful example of Beethoven's early style and a testament to his skill as a composer.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.997516 Composed by Nick Elliott. Contemporary. Score and parts. 25 pages. Nick Elliott #5791563. Published by Nick Elliott (A0.997516). First Movement:In many ways this first movement can be summed up in one word: introspective. It is also a piece that reflects on landscapes of nature. A slow movement, it is essentially written around one main motif that is the driving force behind the movement. This motif becomes longer in the second movement eventually becoming the theme of the string quartet serving as a device to unify all of the movements.Second MovementThis movement is faster than the first, the melodies more fragmentary, more rhythmically driven. It is less introspective and more extroverted and restless. Exploring and expanding on the harmony of the first movement by exploring sound clusters, secundal and quartal harmony, while also playing with tonality more than the first movement did. The idea of rhythmic cells are also briefly explored inspired by Aleatoric music. The movement ends with the serene sound of the first violin in solo combining all three motifs to reveal the theme of the string quartet. The idea of thematic unity is a concept that is explored heavily with this string quartet and will be explored even more in the third and fourth movements.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1141386 Composed by Robert W. Padgett. Baroque,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score. 2 pages. Padgett Music Llc #741710. Published by Padgett Music Llc (A0.1141386). I composed my Invention No. 3 in C minor for two voices during the Spring of 2012. The motive is intriguing as the first twelve notes are immediately followed by their inversion after a drop of a seventh to form a contrapuntal palindrome. This inversion is followed by an octave leap upwards to D that circles back to the starting note C. In bar 3, the lower voice introduces the motive a fourth lower at the dominant as the upper voice states the countermotive which concludes in bar 4 with an augmented tonal version of the descending scale run from the original motive. The ensuing episode in bars 5-8 is constructed from fragments of the motive in the upper voice accompanied by an embellished form of the countermotive in the lower voice. A series of ascending broken thirds accompanied by a rising scale run cadences in the tonic key of C minor in bar 10 before abruptly redirecting to G minor in bar 11. At this juncture, the motive and countermotive are restated in their inversions. The episodic sequence from bars 5-9 is also stated in an inverted form in bars 13-17. In bar 18, the motive is stated by the upper voice in G minor with the countermotive now in the lower voice. This formula is repeated a whole step lower in F minor in bars 20-21 followed by the modulation sequence from bars 5-8 reprised with the voices exchanging places. In bar 27, a cadence in F minor redirects back to C major in bar 28 followed by a modulation sequence culminating in C minor in bar 30 that cadences to a final Picardy Third in bar 32.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1004721 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. Classical. Score and parts. 48 pages. Adrian Gagiu #6204599. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1004721). Beethoven's Romance No. 1 in G major for violin and orchestra op. 40 (c. 1801) was transposed in C major, arranged in the new key and appropriate tempo, and expanded to form a rondo Finale fit for his unfinished Concerto in C major, of which only about a half of a clean copy of the first movement survived as WoO 5 (1791-1792). Also, a newly composed solo cadenza was now inserted. Almost surely, the Romance No. 2 in F major op. 50 (c. 1791?) was intended as the slow movement of the Concerto (it has virtually the same scoring as WoO 5, the manuscript bears no title, and there is a thematic relation to WoO 5). The Romance No. 1 in G major was probably intended as a replacement or alternate slow movement, but it is his only composition relatable to the Concerto fragment, so I adapted it as conjecture Finale for a complete performing version of the Concerto.

This edition: vocal/piano score. Initial release - opera - theater. Wagner Urtext Piano/Vocal Scores. Downloadable, Piano reduction. Schott Music - Digital #Q25918. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q25918). German. An important addition to our newly produced orchestral materials is the first publication of vocal scores of Wagner’s ten great operas, in every important version, based on the Complete Edition. * The score corresponds to the performance materials from the Complete Edition. * For practical use in rehearsal cues and bar numbers throughout. * The publisher has secured the services of renewed musicologists associated with the Richard Wagner Complete Edition who convey detailed information in critical forewords. * The forewords are given in three languages(German, English, French). * Uniform and attractive front cover designs with reproductions of paintings from the Wagner era underline the series design of the edition. DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER (1842-1880 version) This piano reduction is based on the edition of Der fliegende Holländer from the Critical Complete Edition of Richard Wagner’s works (Richard Wagner, Sämtliche Werke [Collected works], Vol. 4, III-VI, edited by Egon Voss, Mainz, 2000f.) The primary source for this edition was the first print of the score dating from 1845 which had however been augmented utilising the sources of additions undertaken after 1845, meaning that this edition is actually a compilation of the final versions of all individual sections or relevant details. The overture for example dates back to 1860 whereas No. 1 appears in the version from 1864. What is however most significant is that the versions from the Collected Editions based on new sources is without doubt closer to the original than the score from 1897 edited by Felix Weingartner which had previously formed the basis for all editions and logically also for all performances.†(Egon Voss, quoted from the foreword of the new Der fliegende Holländer vocal score) Original version and 1842-1880 version The original version of Der fliegende Holländer dates from 1841. Wagner, at the time a completely unknown Kapellmeister in France, trying to get a foothold in Paris, saw the opportunity for a stage work that would meet the fashion at the Paris Opera of performing several short works one after another. Der fliegende Holländer, conceived in 1840 and composed in 1841, seemed to him suited to the purpose. In 1841, even when Wagner no longer counted on a success in Paris, he still held to the conception of a one-act opera and offered the work to German opera houses under the title of “Romantic Opera in One Act and Three Scenesâ€. This version is set in Scotland, taking as the literary model for the opera Heinrich Heine’s novel fragment “From the Memoirs of Mr. Schnabelewopskiâ€, and the protagonists have English names. This version was never performed in Wagner’s lifetime. Beginning in 1842, the work went through a tale of constant revision: Even before the Dresden premiere (2nd January 1843) Wagner undertook fundamental alterations. He transposed the location from Scotland to Norway, changed character’s names as appropriate, divided the opera into three acts – not least due to considerations of scene changes – and transposed Senta’s Ballad from A minor to G minor. It was in this version that the score of the opera went to print in 1845. For a performance in 1860 he composed the later so-called ‘Tristan’ or ‘Redemption’ ending to the Overture. Until the very end of his life, Wagner contemplated a plan for a final score or a definitive vocal score: it never came to be, so that to this day, as with Tannhäuser, we still do not have Der fliegende Holländer in a final version. Based on the research conducted in the creation of the Complete Edition, our editions contain, in one case the original version of 1841, while the other essentially goes back to the first printing of the score of 1845, but with the addition of the source material for the retouchings dating from 1842 to 1889. VOCAL SCORES The original version of the opera was made available for the first time in a vocal score in 2005 (ED 8065). The completely revised new edition of the vocal score of the 1842-1880 version appeared in 2011 (ED 20531).

The scherzo movement consists of two themes that contrast each other in musical character: one is written a somber style; the other has a folk-like melody that has no somber quality. The former theme is based on the melody that was introduced in the development section of the first movement of Sonata In C For Organ; the melody is written in the stepwise manner. As the piece is performed, one shall hear the fragmented version of the TRSCH (Thomas R. Schadl) motive. Scherzo is suitable for recital use.
