Celebration for Brass Quintet is an arrangement of movement one of celebration for Brass and Percussion that I composed in 1976 for Jack Stone and the Richland College Early Brass Ensemble. This high-energy piece was published in 1976 by Shawnee Press, Inc. and performed throughout the nation. The work for large ensemble including full sections of brass plus percussion. The new quintet version makes is possible to play the work without the percussion and with single performers of each instrument. I transcribed most section and rearranged the voicings in some sections to work better for the small group. Movement Three, the rousing Finale...is also available for brass quintet. .

David 2007The songs in my cycle are for voice and piano. They are setting of four poems by Jerry McElveen, Professor Emeritus at Richland College of the Dallas College system. The title refers to texts written during a tour of Italy by a group of college faculty and spouses. On the tour we visited several historic sites around Italy. At the end of the tour, professor McElveen surprised us by reciting a series of poems written during that trip. On hearing his performance, I felt his words were musical and perfect texts to be set to music. The Letters from a Poet in Italy song cycle is the result of our collaboration and has been performed numerous times in the DFW area. A recent performance was sponsored by the art song organization Voces Intimae: the Art of Song. The concert was reviewed by Scott Cantrell Music/Art Critic for the Dallas Morning News and awarded a positive review.  The audio recordings feature soprano Marsha Anderson with my piano accompaniment. Marsha had a distinguished career as an opera singer in Italy for 20 years before returning to Texas as director of the North Lake College Study in Italy program. (She is featured on all recordings except Mvt. III COLOSSEUM. That audio is a synthesizer version).Â

Eighteen in Italy 2. Caregiver 3. Colosseum 4. DAVID The cycle is my setting of poems by Jerry McElveen, my friend and an awesome poet and professor at Richland College. Jerry wrote several poems during a tour of Italy made up of a group of faculty and spouses. On our last day in Rome...he surprised everyone by performing his new works. The minute he started reading I knew this would be a great text to set to music. This cycle has been performed often in the DFW Tx. area...first by Marsha Anderson, my colleague at North Lake College and later by the young soprano Erin Acorn. Marsha earned a living in Italy for over 20 years as an opera singer and taught me lots of valuable details about the substiles of composing for this vocal style. You can hear her beautiful voice on recordings we made at a performance in the concert hall at UTA Arlington. In retrospect, I like the tempos to relax more than these recordings, so the vocal lines have more time to breath. The cycle also received a positive review by the famous music critic for the Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell. Thank you to Scott! I kept the vocal lines away from extreme high and low pitches...and several singers have told me the voice lines are very comfortable for them. Singable by professionals AND young sopranos.

She began the instrument at age 12 and for one of those magical reasons... found a way to make this extremely difficult double reed instrument sound beautiful almost from the start. Tagni now has a son in high school who has a great sound on Clarinet and I transcribed Prelude to Bb so he could perform the piece. Ranges and technique are limited in the solo part and piano. NOTE: If the opening phrase range is high for a young performer it can be played down one octave.

III COLOSSEUM This ethereal song combines a mystical setting recalling the deaths of thousands in the Roman Colosseum. While visiting the modern-day site, Jerry McElveen had visions of the screaming crowds while gladiators and others were killed as entertainment. He was upset to see the current graffiti marring the stone walls of the structure.  The piano score and vocal looks difficult...but several performers have not found it to be problematic. It works as a more modern setup for the jazzy closer, DAVID Mvt IV. If the piano intro to Colosseum, seems to lag before the soprano enters...take the second ending on the intro... that will avoid the star singer having to wait too long! In a beautiful ballroom in Rome on the last day of the tour, Jerry surprised all of us by reciting poems he had created during the tour. When he began presenting his texts...I immediately knew those words were perfect for a musical setting! Our pieces have been performed often throughout the DFW area. Marsha Anderson is a North Lake College faculty member who was an opera singer in Italy for decades and later taught a student credit trip to Italy. You will her perform at University of Texas Arlington with me at the piano. I now think each of the songs should slow down a few clicks to breath more for the singer. The talented young soprano, Erin Alcorn performed the cycle more recently and both performer and my music received excellent reviews from the Dallas Morning News music critic, Scott Cantrell. Simple Salsa was composed for my grandchildren Franklin and Faye and is meant to be fun for new pianists They began piano lessons nine months ago and have made great technical progress and love to perform. The lower part, Piano II, is easier and repeats a basic bass line and simple three note chords. Piano 1 is slightly more difficult but more melodic. The slower section on page two is more melodic and relaxed. The performer can double some of the melody pitches one octave above for more drama and volume. The optional egg shaker part (or any similar shakers) is just a basic Latin rhythm part and is not notated with normal rhythm notation. but just a text suggestion. The music can be played Piano Four Hands or with two pianos. Feel free to add or subtract to the notation and rhythms depending on the level of the young pianists. If other y kids own Latin percussion instruments...they are welcome to join in! Hope you enjoy performing this lively music.

Movement II is my transcription/arrangement of Celebration for Brass and Percussion composed for Jack Stone and the Richland College Morning Brass in the 1970's. The full version was published by Shawnee Press and performed throughout the US but is now...out of print. My quintet version makes the original available for performers to play this exciting brass work. Movement two is the centerpiece of the three movements ending with a fade away solo for tuba. The first performance of the quintet took place at Eastfield College with Dr. Oscar Passley performing and conducting. All three pieces in Celebration are playable by topflight high school players and above.

The original piece was written in 1976 and dedicated to Jack Stone and the Richland College Early Brass. It was published by Shawnee Press and performed often around the nation. The music was scored for large brass section and percussion. My new version is for brass quintet Bb Trumpets 1-2, F French Horn, Trombone and Tuba. Movement III is a real flag waver to bring down the curtain on a concert. It features lots of flashy trumpet phrases and includes a short...melodic/harmonic ensemble section. Cradle Song (Two-Part Choir) is a brand new composition that’s perfect for the Christmas season. It was inspired by a text from the great 18th century English hymn writer Isaac Watts. In addition to 700 hymns, Watts wrote Joy to the World and is considered the father of the English hymn. In my piece I used a few of Watts' most attractive lines including, Heavenly blessings without number, gently falling on thy head, and omitted those referring to Horned oxen, cursed sinners and burning flames. Cradle Song incorporates lush modern keyboard harmonies in attractive piano interludes. Pianists may recognize subtle references to Chopin’s famous Prelude in D-flat, the Raindrop Prelude. To me, raindrops falling helped paint an emotional picture of heavenly blessings gently falling on the Christ child. Comfortable vocal ranges and many unison lines make the two-part treble version sing-able by young choirs and even two soloists. Cradle Song is available in multiple formats including SATB, SAB, in addition to this Two-Part Treble for small choirs.

DIRECTIONS FOR SINGING is my setting of the well-known text by John Wesley giving a litany of advice to congregational singers. My colleague at North Lake College was an outstanding bass/baritone and a church choir director. He handed me a copy of Wesley's directions for singers...found in many old hymnals...and we both enjoyed good laughs at how accurate the words are to modern congregations. My song is a type of theater presentation...or a short cantata and portrays the contrasting emotions in the text. For example: Sing lustily and with good courage ...singing the songs of Satan! Will be a dramatic high point! But, Wesley's beautiful ending makes a great conclusion. Above all sing spiritually. Have and eye to God in every word you sing Directions requires a good pianist but the voice part doesn't require a huge range. Note: there is a Mezzo Soprano score enclosed.
