ViolinVagabond Music #6017039. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845981). This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2014. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 3 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: a Haiku is characterized by a pattern of 5-7-5 syllables, and in this piece that refers to the meters used in each of the overarching sections. The ambient intro in 5/8 involves a quartal ostinato with long sweeping volume swells, which then develops into a pizzicato groove in 7/8. This groove forms the basis for the majority of the tune, as melodies & improvised solos drift in and out over an A and B section loop. On the final B section, the loop drops out and the violinist builds up into a more distorted strum bowing groove (which accompanies a drum solo on the original recording). As the intensity builds, the 7/8 groove is shortened back into 5/8, thus completing the Haiku. The piece ends with a restatement of the original ostinato as it fades into silence using an automated volume fade on the looper pedal.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass or guitar/keyboards (players can read the chord symbols on the chart as a lead-sheet). Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845984). This is an original Celtic fiddle tune that I wrote & performed with my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2015. It was originally conceived as a loop station composition for 7-string electric violin, but can also be performed as a fiddle solo with any form of standard accompaniment. The looper arrangement was recorded on 7-string violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 tempo-synced tracks with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, BOSS RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). A standard 4-string can also work, although most phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: there are 2 distinct sections. The first is a latin groove with a a highly syncopated chopping groove and a simple, soaring melodic head. This section can be opened up for a variety of solo ideas from jazz to Latin to funk, before it transitions using a common tone into the bridge, which is more of an epilogue. This section has much more of a heavy rock bent, with a thick stack of string overdubs that mimic an orchestra sitting over an overdriven rhythm groove, and a breakdown where aggressive drum fills are accompanied by rhythmic chugging in the violin. Finally, all of these ideas culminate as the A section melody is re-introduced over the rock groove, building to an ultimate climax.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. I usually add additional percussive loops when I perform this solo.I have also included three auxiliary string parts, which can be used to perform this piece with a string section or an orchestra. The parts line up with the second section of the tune and replace some of the loops with live parts. A hang is a computer term for the failure of a program to continue to respond to signals, causing the operating system to freeze. Hangs occur in different ways, but this work depicts one common symptom of the hang: thrashing, the exhaustion of memory from rapidly exchanging data. Depicting failing machines, this is music marked by frequent reboots, constant bleeps, bops, clicks, the occasional rude interruption, and makes use of ever-repeating musical figures to help depict an eternal state of stuck.

This is a very accessible arrangement - the sopranos only go up to D and the tenors to E. It begins with a male solo, though this can easily be given to any section of the choir if desired. A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. In regards to the piano loop, while I have provided a transcription of what I played in the track, you are free to use this as inspiration to create your own.Performance time - 3 minIf you happen to record or film this piece, feel free to tag #JLTStudio ... Metro is the fifth and final movement of A Texas Symphony- This piece takes the listener on a current day musical road trip, from Houston to Dallas to Austin. The journey begins with a travel theme, a variation of which is also then played between each city. The beginning of the travel theme is identified by a snare and timpani rhythm. Houston is the first city of the road trip an the music represents oil wells pumping – a constant timpani beat and triangle is played throughout the Houston music to represent the rhythm of the active oil wells pumping. The travel theme comes back with a key change as the music takes the listener to Dallas, where three ideas are represented; art and glamour, driving on freeway loops around Dallas, and exhilarating night life. The music is upbeat and changes keys several times. The travel theme returns in a different key while traveling to Austin, which is represented by a lyrical Texas waltz, a familiar Texas folk song, and a fiddle theme played in a more classical style. The finale is a blending of themes from the three cities and the travel theme.
