The Unquiet Grave from American Death Ballads (Downloadable)

High voice and piano - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8454-2E Composed by David Conte. Secular, 21st century. Instrument part. 6 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8454-2E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8454-2E). English.American Death Ballads was composed especially for tenor Brian Thorsett. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribed and published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1, 2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones. The choice of texts for my American Death Ballads was inspired partly by Copland’s Old American Songs, which I deeply admire, but more by my dear friend and colleague the late Conrad Susa’s Two Murder Ballads. The ingenuity of Susa’s accompaniments for his ballads in imagining anew the original source material owes a great deal to Copland’s accompaniment for his songs. Though the content of my songs is completely original and not based on preexisting melodies, I have tried to expand on this further, as the texts are much longer, and go through many different moods and characters. The four texts I chose include stories about murder, death, and dying. Though two of the texts were written in England, they traveled to the colonies almost immediately. The subjects of the texts had spent time in America, and their stories were well known to Americans.Wicked Polly is a cautionary tale. Polly has lived a dissolute and immoral life, saying, 'I'll turn to God when I grow old.' Suddenly taken ill, she realizes that it is too late to repent. She dies in agony and is presumably sent to hell; young people are advised to heed. My musical setting is stately and preacherly in character for the narrator; for Polly it becomes pleading and remorseful. The Unquiet Grave was brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, the great American field collector of folk music, by English folk singer Shirley Collins. The text is taken from an English folk song dating from 1400. In The Unquiet Grave, a young man mourns his dead lover too fervently and prevents her from obtaining peace. The dead woman complains that his weeping is keeping her from peaceful rest. He begs a kiss; she tells him it would kill him. When he persists, wanting to join her in death, she explains that once they were both dead their hearts would simply decay, and that he should enjoy life while he has it. My setting is in a flowing Andante with a rocking accompaniment. Three voices are delineated here: the narrator, the mournful lover, and the dead lover speaking from the grave. The Dying Californian first appeared in the New England Diadem in 1854. Its lyrics are based on a letter from a New Englander’s sailor to his brother who is dying at sea while on the way to California to seek his fortune in the California gold fields. He implores his brother to impart his message to his father, mother, wife, and children. My setting opens with the singer alone in a moderate dirge tempo, then, joined by the piano, moves through many tonalities and moods before ending with supreme confidence as the speaker 'gained a port called Heaven/Where the gold will never rust.'Captain Kidd was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy and murder in 1701. The American connection to this ballad is that Kidd escaped to America and for a time lived in New York and Boston, though he was a wanted criminal by the British authorities and was extradited to Britain, where he was hung at 'Executioner’s Dock.' The lyric was printed in Britain in 1701, traveling to the colonies almost immediately. Though the didactic tone of the text is similar to Wicked Polly, it expresses no regret until the final lines: 'Take warning now by me, and shun bad company, / Lest you come to hell with me, for I must die.' My setting is fast and spirited, expressing the confidence of a man who lived life as he wanted. -David Conte.

DF McCorkle Music and eBook Publications #11767. Published by DF McCorkle Music and eBook Publications (A0.784838). CUT FROM SHOW: I Can See. The King, by Dennis McCorkle, is a contemporary pop-rock musical of the first two kings of Israel, Saul ben Kish and David ben Jesse and explores the contrasting lives and outcome of each man’s choices in life. [1 Samuel 28:7-18 - Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? And Saul sware to her by Yahweh, saying, As Yahweh liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth. And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing Yahweh is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? And Yahweh hath done to him, as he spake by me: for Yahweh hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbor, even to David: Because thou obeyedst not the voice of Yahweh, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath Yahweh done this thing unto thee this day. Instrumental Duet Flute,Harp,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.502638 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Arranged by Karen Almquist, Edited by Jennifer Grady. Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 4 pages. HarpSong, Jennifer Grady and Karen Almquist #114989. Published by HarpSong, Jennifer Grady and Karen Almquist (A0.502638). “Goin Home†is a peaceful and moving flute and harp arrangement of Antonin Dvorak’s magnificent Symphony No. 9 “From the New World†2nd Movement. The arrangement in Eb begins and ends quietly in the lower register of the instruments. The flute introduces the melody over quiet eighth note arpeggios on the harp. The harp plays the melody in the second verse. “Goin Home†builds to a glorious ending with an uplifting harp glissando, full rolled chords and flute soaring in its high register. The music is full of emotion and hope. William Arms Fisher a student of Dvorak penned the moving lyrics “Goin Home†to the music. Goin' home. Goin' home. I'm a-goin' home. Quiet-like some still day, I'm just goin' home. It's not far, just close by, through an open door. Work all done, cares laid by, goin' to roam no more; Mother's there 'xpecting me, father's waiting, too, Lots of folks gathered there, all the friends I knew. Morning star lights the way, restless dream all done. Shadows gone, break of day, real life just begun. There's no break, there's no end, just a-living on; Wide awake, with a smile, going on and on. Going home. Going home, I'm just going home. It's not far, just close by, through an open door.

Small Ensemble Guitar,Low Voice,Medium Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576706 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by David Warin Solomons. Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 5 pages. David Warin Solomons #90245. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576706). Schubert's setting of words from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister (with my singing translation in English) transposed to the key of E minor for low voice and guitar. In some places the guitar part is simplified in comparison to the original piano part in order to improve the flowing quality and to make it possible for one person to accompany herself/himself on the guitar. A version for low voice and piano also in E minor, is also available The sound sample is an electronic preview. The three individual songs (Wer sich der Einsamkeit ergibt, Wer nie sein Brot mit Tränen ass, An die Türen) and also all three together (under the title Gesänge des Harfners (songs of the harpist) ) are available on this site The pdf file contains the score and also the separate parts. I will creep up to the doors and stand there quiet and polite goodly hands will give me food and grateful I will leave their sight Every person will seem happy When they see me at their door They will shed a tear which I will never know the reason for. (English translation (c) 2015 David Warin Solomons) If you would like a downloadable mp3 of the guitar accompaniment, you can use this reference in the search box on sheetmusicplus: S0.707285

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1120365 By Philip Le Bas. By J-B Lully / G Bizet. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #721616. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1120365). A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

Full Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402356 Composed by Ron Goodwin. Arranged by Chris Siddall. Film/TV. 33 pages. Chris Siddall Music Publishing #985569. Published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (A0.1402356). While his scores for both 633 Squadron (1963) and Operation Crossbow (1965) had boasted patriotic, major-key themes celebrating the heroics of the protagonists, composer Ron Goodwin took a different approach for Where Eagles Dare, generating his main theme for the picture out of the initial notes of an ascending minor scale. Rather than celebrate the heroics of the screen characters, the title music embodies the single-minded ambition of the protagonists to infiltrate the mountain fortress of Schloss Adler and complete their mission, no matter what the costs. The composer recalled in a 1994 interview that some of this approach came from the filmâ??s director, Brian Hutton. For instance, he wanted music at the beginning of the film but he also wanted to hear the airplane engines approaching from the distance, which is actually why he started off with just the side drums playing quietly and then building up and getting louder, so that you could actually hear the sound of the airplane before the orchestra comes in. After the snare drum and the â??Aâ? section of the main title comes a melodically related fugal section that, the composer told Randall D. Larson in 1984, was an idea that arose from the â??concept of people following each other around and dodging away from each other...[which] gave me the idea of writing a sort of fugue-style theme...and then I used that in various ways for all the sort of creeping and following and chasing that was going on throughout the film.â?Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.499760 Composed by S. G. Potts. 20th Century,Contemporary,Romantic Period,Standards. Score. 18 pages. S. G. Potts #3512109. Published by S. G. Potts (A0.499760). The Raymond Variations for Piano (Set 1), received its world premiere on 2nd December 2015 at the 1901 Arts Club London, performed by Lorraine Womack-Banning as part of a memorial tribute concert to her late husband Raymond Banning (former professor of pianoforte at Trinity College London). The Variations are based on the three Andantino themes which form a central part of the ‘Raymond Overture’ written in 1851 by French composer Ambroise Thomas: 1811-1896. There are nine piano variations in total; these include a mix of both full and short partial variations (including a very short declamatory two chord introductory variation). The variations are not numbered or set-apart in a conventional manner, rather they form part of a continuous whole, and are separated only by bridge passages and/or cadence points; they last a little under eight minutes in duration, and strongly exploit the passionate elements of Thomas’s themes. They have been written for the most part in an accessible tonal style (with a passing nod to Messrs. Beethoven and J.S. Bach) and are based predominately in the home key of D minor, but they do also take advantage of many 20th and 21st century harmonic techniques where deemed appropriate: e.g. added note chords; cluster chords; percussive chords, and melodic deflection. In particular, the interval of the major 7th and its enharmonic equivalent(s) (the most distinctive interval in the main andantino theme from the overture) is heard in various different guises throughout the variations: this includes its inversion the minor 2nd which has a very distinctive sharp dissonant quality. Much play is made of these intervals – to somewhat humorous effect in variation 8 (the joker in the pack) heard some three quarters into the set, here the dissonant interval is pounded out double forte before hastily leading into some boisterous cluster harmonic instability; then quietly begins variation 9 which duly brings the set to a close. Look out for the sting in the tail!

Arranged by Jim Fieldhouse. A Cappella,Jazz. 9 pages. Nefarious Music Publications #4408528. Published by Nefarious Music Publications (A0.875870). Take 6, the american a cappella vocal group, formed in the 1980s.They soon gained critical acclaim and a succession of albums were released. They have worked with some of the biggest names in pop music, R&B and jazz and are still performing today. A Quiet Place was written my Ralph Carmichael in 1967 but the 1988 recording by Take 6 is the most well loved version of this song. This quartet arrangement is scored for two alto saxes, tenor and baritone. In order to bring Take 6's beautiful setting of Ralph Carmichael's music & lyrics to life, all four players will need to capitalise on the vocal fluidity of the saxophone sound. the lyrics (listed below) will give performers an indication of the atmosphere they are looking to create. There is a quiet placeFar from the rapid paceWhere God can soothe my troubled mindSheltered by tree and flowerThere in my quiet hourWith Him my cares are left behindWhether a garden smallOr on a mountain tallNew strength and courage there I find Then from this quiet placeI go prepared to faceA new day with love for all mankindEnjoy!

Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1211209 Composed by Ivo Antognini. A Cappella,Contemporary,Latin,Sacred. Octavo. 24 pages. Ivo Antognini #808911. Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

Instrumental Duet,Piano B-Flat Clarinet,Cello,Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1284045 Composed by Spiritual. Arranged by Maria Thompson Corley. 21st Century,Chamber,Christian,Sacred,Traditional. 17 pages. Maria Thompson Corley #875217. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1284045). “Crossing Jordan†grew out of my daughter Kiana’s surprise request that I arrange a spiritual for voice, piano and cello for her senior recital. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again. The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello. The flute/piano/cello version may have been performed, but if so, nobody has mentioned it to me.

Published by PFTMusic (A0.784652). Regnum Pacis... The Reign of PeaceA choral setting of the Isaiah 11 text: There shall come forth a shoot from the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots... Then shall the lion dwell with the lamb, then the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the wolf and the lion cub together, with a little child to lead them... Contemplative, with rich harmonies, quiet, but ultimately hopeful, as the season of Advent itself. You will find this this piece fits perfectly in worship services of lessons and carols, as well as Advent, and Christmas season services and concerts. Accessible to a good high school, college/university, or church mixed choir. The piano part is challenging, but not difficult. Soprano splits occasionally, otherwise, solid four part writing; lyrical melodies, lush harmonies, but no extremes in range. The cello begins to dialogue with this melody offset by a measure. The soloist is heard next in music that also dialogues with the cello, both a bit more complex than the beginning. All voices take up the solo passage, the cello commenting. The voices go into canon at the half measure, the cello continues with its own melody. The piece returns to unison and ends quietly. Clarinet & string quartet - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CMF183 Composed by Samuel Livi…

Clarinet & string quartet - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CMF183 Composed by Samuel Livingston. Score and Parts. 88 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CMF183. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF183). 9 x 12 in inches. The clarinet is my instrument, and I think the two greatest works in its repertory (and two of the greatest of all chamber works) are the quintets for clarinet and strings by Mozart and Brahms. In writing for this combination of instruments, I borrowed ideas shamelessly from both.I would describe the style as folk-inspired classical chamber music. The melodies are song-like or dance-like; the harmonies are simple, modal, and consonant. The time signatures of the three movements are 7/8, 5/4, 7/8 - unusual in classical music but common in the folk music of some eastern European countries. The texture is homophonic in some places and contrapuntal in others, always with at least one melody, often with more than one. The clarinet is not treated as a solo instrument but is integrated into the ensemble. The first movement is in sonata form. As in the Mozart and Brahms quintets, it begins in the strings, with the clarinet entering a few bars later on a rising arpeggio. The first theme is song-like; the second theme is dance like. The movement ends quietly on a phrase from the second theme. The form of the second movement begins with a song for the cello, repeated in the clarinet. The next section features a dance-like melody in the second violin, repeated in the clarinet with a descant in the first violin. Then a brief section in the minor, featuring the viola, leads to a repetition of the song that opened the movement, this time in the viola, repeated in the violins and the clarinet. The third movement is a set of variations on a brisk, dance-like theme. After several variations, including two in the minor mode, the tempo slows to adagio for the next-to-last variation (as in the last movement of the Mozart quintet). That variation features a duet for the first violin and the clarinet (as in the slow movement ofthe Brahms quintet). The final variation returns to the brisk tempo and brings back the melodic figure that ends the first movement. A brief coda on this melodic figure concludes the piece.

Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.875871 By Take 6. By Ralph Carmichael. Arranged by Jim Fieldhouse. A Cappella,Gospel. Score and parts. 16 pages. Nefarious Music Publications #4410775. Published by Nefarious Music Publications (A0.875871). A quiet Place was written in 1967 but it was the 1988 recording, by American a cappella group, Take 6, that has gone on to become the most well loved version. This arrangment for four trombones (or three trombones and tuba) is based on that recording. In order to bring this beautiful setting of Ralph Carmichael's music & lyrics to life, sensitive phrasing and legato playing is paramount. A very strong upper register is required for parts 1 & 2 This quartet is scored for three tenors and bass trombone. Treble clef B flat parts and a treble clef E flat tuba transposition of part 4 are included for brass bands and alternative parts 1 and 2 in tenor clef are available. There is a quiet placeFar from the rapid paceWhere God can soothe my troubled mindSheltered by tree and flowerThere in my quiet hourWith Him my cares are left behindWhether a garden smallOr on a mountain tallNew strength and courage there I find Then from this quiet placeI go prepared to faceA new day with love for all mankindDifficulty Rating : advanced plus

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1495488 By Damien Gauci. By Damien Gauci. Classical,Contemporary. Score. 7 pages. Damien Gauci #1072005. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1495488). Whiskers and Pippin had left the abandoned house behind, but they carried with them something far more valuable than anything they could have found within its dusty walls—a new friendship. As they journeyed through the woods, they discovered that they had more in common than just their fur colour. Their shared curiosity led them to explore new paths, while their cautious natures kept them safe from danger. Every rustle of the leaves, every flicker of movement in the underbrush, became an adventure when they were together.Day after day, Whiskers and Pippin would meet at the edge of the forest, eager to explore each other’s favourite spots. Whether it was a hidden grove full of the sweetest acorns or a quiet stream perfect for reflection, they found joy in sharing these special places with each other. The once lonely woods now felt alive with the warmth of their companionship. They would chase each other up trees, playfully darting between branches, and when the day grew late, they would sit side by side, watching the sun dip below the horizon. The fear and hesitation that once filled their first encounter was now just a distant memory. In its place was a deep bond, forged through shared experiences and a mutual understanding. Whiskers and Pippin might have been cautious, but together, they found the courage to explore a world that felt much less daunting with a friend by their side. And so, from that day on, they were inseparable—two squirrels who had found in each other a lifelong companion, proving that sometimes, the best adventures begin when you least expect them.
