The storm returns with building fury but quickly passes, once again settling into stillness. Just before the song's ending, the storm echoes off in the distance, letting us know that our troubles may not yet be over. This is the ninth arrangement in my Contemplative Spirituals for Solo Piano collection.

I have chosen to arrange Mary Had a Baby as a simple lullaby. The nearly continuous eighth notes symbolize the rocking of a cradle and the gentleness and love a mother feels for her child. The principal melody rarely disappears but it sometimes interwoven with the familiar and traditional Christmas hymns, Silent Night,' Away in a Manger and O Little Town of Bethlehem. This is the eighth arrangement in my Contemplative Spirituals for Solo Piano collection.

Published by GGLS Publishing (A0.1117851). This mele is about a love affair at HiÊ»ilawe (highest waterfall in HawaiÊ»i) and WaioÊ»ulu, two waterfalls in WaipiÊ»o Valley on the Big Island. The girl, from Puna, describes herself poetically as the fragrance from Puna. Distressed by the gossip mongers, she calls them chattering birds. Mist of the mountains in the 3rd verse is the poetic way of saying this is a secret love affair. LÄlÄkea and Hakalaoa are streams at the top of WaipÊ»io Valley that flow over the cliff forming the twin waterfalls of HiÊ»ilawe and Hakalaoa. They merge into the HiÊ»ilawe stream that is one of two main waterways in WaipiÊ»o Valley.

Published by GGLS Publishing (A0.1110548). This arrangement of the African-American spiritual, Were You There, takes us through the crucifixion of Jesus, his entombment and resurrection. After the plaintive introduction, the first verse is a modified arrangement of the standard hymn and asks Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Verse 2 begins with a little hope that quickly turns to disbelief at watching nails being driven into the Christ: Were you there when they nailed him to a tree?. The left hand simulates the hammer and slowly, slowly, Jesus dies. The key of the third verse is lower than the first two, minor and dissonant and symbolic of Christ being lowered into a tomb. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? The opening motif returns now, full of quiet despair but gradually evolves into light shining from the tomb and bringing forth hope. Finally, the last verse Were you there when he rose up from the grave? is in an entirely new key from the first three verses and moves with more excitement. Joy builds and the left hand never stays down for long, constantly rising again and again as Christ is raised from the dead in triumph. We conclude with a softening and slowly into contented joy, secure in our faith and knowledge of rebirth.

The arrangement begins mysteriously and with the chorus theme played simply in the bass. The verse, in hymn format, follows. The second section switches to 12/8 with the left had indicative of turmoil, roiling anger and discontent. The melody returns but with frequent clashes with added major 7ths, meant to show the clash between the oppressors and oppressed. The demands grow more fervent and turbulent until reaching a resigned end. The coda brings back the melody of the verse at a much slower tempo with a wistful ending that questions whether salvation is ever coming.

The meter than changes, feeling a little more urgent and a heartbeat is introduced in the left hand which remains for most of the work. This can be interpreted as a fetal heartbeat, the heartbeat of the singer or the listener. It ebbs and flow, becoming at times more urgent and then more restful. The modulation into the third verse is coupled with a key change, intended to convey a stronger, more sorrowful emotion. The work ends in quiet with the person alone. Alone. This is the seventh installment in my Contemplative Spirituals for Piano collection.
