Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? This is it: 'Gotta get a message to you, hold on.Revive this hit on your brass instruments and enjoy!

An original work of mine entitled ''Gettin' Bluesy'' written for young concert band. Composed in a bluesy style with flattened 3rds & 7ths evident in the melody, this is a lovely piece with which to calm the atmosphere; and an excellent way to introduce a bluesy piece to your band members. The mood is melancholy, I did compose this after my cat sadly passed away when I was living in Norway. The melody is passed around the ensemble, akin to the conversational style one can observe in a Haydn string quartet. The brass have the opportunity for some transparent and soft muted work behind the melody scored in the woodwind. The bass guitar can be replaced with a double bass if desired. Your percussionists get the opportunity to play kit and also the vibes are used, a great work out all round! Everybody Deserves Somebody to Love is a musical story in which two characters, who work together, are at a joyful party, with lots of dancing and drinking. Both are in love with each other but social, family, and professional issues prevent them from getting together. However, one of the characters absorbed by the joy of the party (too much to drink, maybe) decides to insist in the relationship. The other character is hesitant and afraid to face such challenge. At the end of the song they decide to take the chance. The piece is structured in a rondó form with the following parts that I called: Introduction (I); A; B; C; I; A; D; A; C; I; A. Imagine a rock and habanera cake with Scarlatti syrup. The layers are: A: An invitation. They say phrases like: “Come to me because I need you nowâ€. B: Expression of pure desire with phrases such as: Hey! I can Ìt control myself now. B could be called A’. C: In a syncopated rhythm is argumentation. One party is trying to convince the other about assuming their relationship singing like that: “Everybody deserves somebody to love. I can help you to carry on. Just give your life a second chanceâ€. D: Is a moment of reflection. One of the characters is at greater risk and says: I´m afraid, love hurts sometimes. It won´t be so easy to start a new life now.â€.

Published by Richard Swan (A0.1128381). This is a fairly challenging sing, with some gloriously high notes (top Gs) for the soprano 1s. It needs some strong soprano 2s as well, and some tenors will probably need to use head voice at times. I've stuck as closely as I could to the original harmonies while splitting the solo parts between the choir parts. I hope you enjoy it. I'll have a YouTube link up at some point. There are some slightly dodgy-sounding rehearsal tracks which you can buy from me if you get in touch through my choir (London City Voices), and I soon should have a backing track you can purchase too, although a karaoke one will work if it's the same structure as the original song.
