I was recently invited to a farewell cocktail party for Robert Levin and Ya Fei Chuang on the occasion of their move from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Salzburg where Ya Fei got a job teaching at the Mozarteum. John Harbison wrote a little piano duet for them, and it inspired me to looking into writing a grand duo for two pianos. Looking around, I discovered that Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) wrote a work with the title, Grand Duo Concertant for violin and piano. I immediately launched into a search for Alkan the composer and I discovered that he was a contemporary of Chopin, Franz Liszt, George Sand, and Victor Hugo. Like Liszt and Chopin, he wrote tons of music for the piano, and he was at the cusp of fame when he withdrew from society and remained a recluse for the last years of his life.Aside from the Grand Duo Concertant, I found his 49 Ésquisses to be especially lovely and beguiling. My work for two pianos is based on ideas from both works. I especially thought the beginning of the GDC fascinating because the LH sounded like a walking jazz bass line. That got me started on the Prelude, and then I organized the remaining movements of the work around the GDC with materials I found attractive in the 49 ésquisses.I. Prélude ... Assez animéII. The audio sample is a medium swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my tunes from Finale PrintMusic. You hear two melodies with the accompaniment -- a treble electric guitar, and a simulated baritone voice (without the words). A rock version of St. Matthew Blue is also for sale on this web site. St. Matthew Blue portrays an unhappy person coping with the COVID 19 pandemic, which started early in the year 2020. It’s not a blues tune, however, so the word blue is in the title without the s. St. Matthew Blue contains unusual harmonies inspired by J. S. Bach’s opening chorus to the St. Matthew Passion. This tune doesn't match the profundity and appeal of Bach's chorus, but the two 16-bar themes of St. Matthew Blue contain some of my favorite harmonic ideas from Bach’s work. This gives a depth to this piece that sets it apart from other swing tunes. Here are the lyrics to St. Matthew Blue:An evil little bug has got me down.I want to drink a mug of beer in town. But now I get supplies brought to my door From many tries to find an online store. Self-pity brings to mind St. Matthew’s tale, How Jesus saved our kind from fiery hell. That my soul is safe may well be true, But I still chafe at fighting this damn flu.

A couple or a few years ago during the Pandemic, there was a Discord Server vs Server Competition going on, and one of the online virtual group communities out of all the other servers took part in a theme called Dreams. When the event started, I immediately started composing this beautiful composition, and chose the instrumentation for Uncommon Woodwinds (Alto Flute, English Horn, and Sopranino Sax), Strings, Harp, and Crotales. However, my submission entry didn't make it to the final Dreams EP as expected. But the admins of the online orchestra group told me that I can still host it as a community project, and it just so happens that I actually did do that, and I've gotten a good amount of submissions from the members themselves, went through all the mixing and editing, etc, before releasing the final performance.This piece is meant to be described about dreaming to a wonderful place you might've remembered, and haven't forgotten in a long time, experiencing the deja vu moments of what you think might've happened long time ago, hence the title, of course.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. My knees trembling, my whole body shaking, I sang every word that she mouthed to me. By the time I sat down I had decided that I was never going to sing again. However, on the way back to my mother, so many people told me that I did a good job that I decided maybe I would sing again. I believe in myself. I also believe that God is my Father and that Jesus Christ , who is my elder brother, is the Savior of the world.

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.8 pages, PDF score.
