Originally titled Sospiri d'Amour, this instrumental miniature, Sospiri (Sighs), Opus 70 was originally intended as a companion to Salut d'Amour. Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Bass Trombone and Piano as an homage to the great English master. The work is about 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

The Concerto Grosso for Three Trombones and Orchestra by Lyndol Mitchell was composed in 1961 as part of his Doctoral dissertation at the Eastman School of Music and was first performed in 1963 at a memorial concert for the composer after his untimely death. The performers were six students of Emory Remington, including Ralph Sauer and Don King. The work is is subtitled in stile Barocco and is in three movements. Movement I begins with an somber introductory Adagio followed by an Allegro in the style of a Bach Fugue led by the three soloists. Movement II is a slow and serious Larghetto in C minor. Movement III is a Presto in D minor in a Toccata style and is full of many mixed meter bars that add little little rhythmic surprises along the way. The 13-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The hand copied score and parts Concerto Grosso were rediscovered in the Sibley Library at the Eastman School of Music by Jeremy Kempton who then engraved and proofed them. He performed the work in 2011 with colleagues for the first time since its premier in 1963.

As the title suggests the work dying and dancing for Euphonium solo and Piano accompaniment is in two parts, which are played without a pause between the two. The first part, an adagio, is not necessarily meant to be evocative of the actual act of passing away, but more perhaps of the contemplation and reflection upon one’s life as that time approaches, and particularly of sorrow over regret and disappointment. The unsettled mood of the music reflects this bitterness, and stands in contrast to the expansive peace of the grave, heard at the beginning and end of the adagio. Dance, with ironic wit, the second part, is the other side of the same coin; perhaps humor of the gallows describes its spirit. At once fatalist and mocking, it brings to mind the words of the ancient teacher Koheleth, The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. I was pleased to compose dying and dancing in 2013 for Mark Kellogg, a superb Euphonium artist and my former trombone professor at the Eastman School of Music.

Elgar composed this heartfelt work in 1914 for string orchestra, harp, and organ, just before the outbreak of WWI. It is a bleak adagio of thoughtful intensity that he dedicated as a tribute to W.H. Reed, a dear friend, and the Concertmaster of the London Symphony. The work has been described most beautifully by Michael Kennedy who wrote, It is, though short, a major work of grave beauty, an epitome of Elgar’s ability to express nostalgic regret.Ralph Sauer has arranged this beautiful work for Euphonium and Piano (part is in bass clef) as an homage to the great English master. Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in C minor, op. 6 no. 8: 1. Allemande (Andante) – serious and dramatic; 2. Grave-Andante allegro – a somber transition, then agitated and experimental; 3. Adagio-Siciliana (Andante) – a brief, beautiful and simple introduction, then complex and expressive; 4. Allegro – dance-like and crisp. Total duration 13 min 30 sec.
