Pre-heard for recorder consort is a post-minimalist work that is challenging but not unemployable to play and listen too.This was the last work I composed by hand (written in 1997), not using a scoring program as I've done since. Thus, it does sound different. The sections in it are more disconnected and I think you can hear the almost graphic-based experiments I am conducting as I'm writing it (these are not bad things - there is a real clarity to this work). I couldn't resist making some changes to it as I was digitizing it. I've ironed out some of the crazier rhythms (that looked good on paper but were meaningless in performance) and added a repeat to make the piece more coherent.It is about 5 minutes in duration (score and parts included).

This small accessible, but challenging work for descant recorder, alto recorder and piano is based on a few notes from an Erik Satie composition and is in a post-minimalist style. Complex rhythms and time signatures are overlaid with simple, but mesmerizing melodic fragments. It is a good work to show off the recorder in a modern context. Length 2:30 mins.

Published by Greg Shapley (A0.966354). Phrygian Swell is an easy to play round for recorders in three parts (it may also be played by many other instruments). It is written for near-beginners, but its designed so that the sum is greater that its parts. Included in this score are two versions. The original changes time signature every bar (eventually getting up to 23/4). It plays with a number of concepts, all designed as educational tools. Firstly, it is written entirely in the mode known as Phrygian. This mode has a distinctive mystical sound primarily due to its first interval – which is a minor second. Secondly, it has been written to get players thinking about time without being too challenging (so despite the change of time signatures, most notes are just crotchets). Another educational facet of these changing time signatures is that they ascend by primary numbers. Thirdly, being a round it gets young players used to playing different parts with other players, while initially being able to rehearse altogether. Fourthly, this piece is comprised entirely of scales, but it doesn't just sound like an exercise (I hope). The second version, barred in 4/4 is exactly the same as the first, except for the rebarring. This is done in case following the continually changing time signatures is too difficult (although it does defeat the purpose of the piece to a certain extent). This version of this piece was written for three alto/treble (transposed from the original for descant/soprano or tenor), but due to its simplicity and range, could be played by many other instruments.

Published by Greg Shapley (A0.966355). One in a series of sparkly pieces specially designed for descant (soprano) recorder and piano. Inspired (in part) by Louis Andriessen's use of instrumentation in 'Melodie', 'Three Notes Each' is all about rhythmic counterpoint, simple, complimentary, Gamelan-inspired modes and the melding of two, very different, timbres. Post-minimalist in nature, it is challenging but not virtuosic, edgy, but not overly-dissonant. This piece is unusual in two other ways. The pianist only uses their right hand (the upper register of the piano goes particularly well with descant recorder), and each instrument is assigned only three notes. This economic use of compositional material yields surprisingly engaging results. Although written for descant (soprano) recorder and piano, this piece can also be played with treble (alto) and tenor recorder. Duration: 3 minutes.

It's a tune that everyone will recognize reduced to a one minute chunk that young flute/alto recorder/clarinet (etc.) players can master confidently without the intimidation of pages of notes (also good for violins and possibly other instruments). It is an extract, but crafted so that it sounds like a complete piece (good for auditions). Includes beginner features such as courtesy accidental and a recommended tempo a bit slower than the original (as per the recording).Duration: Approx 1 minute.

It is in three continuous movements (a cautious, lighthearted first, a dark ambient second, and a triumphant third). This work is about 9 minutes long.

A setting for unaccompanied mixed choir (SATB) of the poem FIRE AND ICE by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963). Duration ca. 3'15.Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prize−winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems. Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space.
