They belong, the first to the repertoire of white religious music, generally called Christian Music, which is characterized by a clear influence of the Country and Pop genre and the other to the repertoire of Gospel Music, Afro-American religious music, born in the Christian-Methodist churches in the '30s. The author of As the Deer is Martin J. Nystrom, American composer who, based on a simple and very effective chord progression, resumes the beginning of Psalm 42: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God ... (Psalm 42, 1-2) The author of Hallelujah, Oh Lord we praise your name is Keith Armstead, minister of music at King George Church of God in King George, VA. The song, with a typical Gospel atmosphere, is characterized by the solo vs. chorus mode, that is to say a short singing phrase performed by a single singer (in this arrangement performed by sopranos) alternates the response of the whole choir. The song is included in the album You can count on Jesus, produced by Armstead and published in 2003.

Part II of Handel's Messiah closes with the chorus Hallelujah, in the key of D major.In many parts of the world, it is the accepted practice for the audience to stand for this section of the performance. The tradition is said to have originated with the first London performance of Messiah, which was attended by King George II. As the first notes of the triumphant Hallelujah Chorus rang out, the king was so moved that he rose to his feet and remained standing until the end of the chorus. Royal protocol has always dictated that when the monarch stands, everyone in the monarch's presence is also required to stand. Thus, the entire audience and orchestra stood when the king stood during the performance, initiating a tradition that has lasted more than two centuries.My arrangement is for standard wind dectet: 2 fl, 2 oboes,2 clt in A, 2 hns in D and 2 bassoons.

Jubilee of Thanks was commissioned for the Grenada National Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Although heavily based on traditional coronation music it is generic enough to be suitable for any service of Thanksgiving or Celebration.Here is the description found inside the cover of the conductor's score:In order to gain inspiration and insight into this commission I researched British Coronations past and present. One of the oldest traditions is the use of Handel's oratorio Zadok the Priest. This 144-page composition was written for the coronation of King George II in 1727 and has been used at every coronation since. Thus I began my composition with a Handelian style section, borrowing a phrase from Zadok the Priest and developing it into a fanfare opening. Into this section I interjected the traditional cry of Long live the Queen, but set it in the old church Latin.The middle section arranges the hymn Now Thank We All Our God, originally written in 1663. This hymn is regarded all across Europe as the official anthem for services of National Thanksgiving. I created different settings for all three verses. Another tradition of British coronations is the use of Psalms 100 and 120. I have taken just one line from each Psalm and woven it into the hymn as a descant or antiphon.The final section is a Hallelujah Chorus fusing tradition with local flavour by using soca rhythms. In a sly nod to the opening section the very last choral Alleluia is straight from Handel's Messiah.Phil BeamanMarch 2012The choir is in 2 part but much of it unison since it was intended for a massed choir with little rehearsal. Interest comes from the changing styles of each section, 7 key changes, 3 meter changes, and the 2 Trumpets accompanying.
