Published by Derrick Thom. Lewis (A0.1217090). This is a “toccata†for whom? Answer: the celli, basses, bassoons and tuba, for this is a workout for those often under-challenged members. In addition, this a gem of a piece as regards its wonderfully concise construction and simple, satisfying form. It is historically ironic, given Berlioz' wild public image and antipathy to musical authority, that he could produce such a work as this so effortlessly, a product a pure intellect without seeming passion. This could serve as an effective curtain-raiser or a daily exercise in general rehearsal. As many characteristics of the composer as I could manage are to be found in this arrangement, viz. Tbn. on melody, High viola the same, W/w tremolos, Fl./vl. Unison melody, --thereby (hopefully) evoking the Corsair Overture, Harold in Italy, Sym.Fantastique, Nuits d'Éte.

Set for flute choir by John Gibson (piccolo, flute 1-2-3, alto, bass, contrabass)The Rob Roy Overture for orchestra was composed in 1831 by Hector Berlioz with Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy as inspiration. Scott's book took a rather romantic view of Rob Roy MacGregor as a Scottish Robin Hood character. Rob Roy was born in 1671 and became a folk hero and the focus of a number of movies. Berlioz used rollicking Scottish jig figures and many parts of the piece were later re-worked into his Harold in Italy for viola and orchestra.Berlioz's overture set for flute choir requires sufficient forces of players to carry off his intentions, so I suggest this be played by a large flute choir, preferably with at least 3 on a part for the flute, 2 on alto, and 2 on bass, A single piccolo and contrabass flute would be adequate. Of course, a smaller group could perform this, but a larger one might be more successful. The piece is about 9 minutes long.

An arrangement of the popular song, 'Softly As I Leave You', for brass quintet. It originated in 1960 in Italy and was called, 'Piano' (Italian for soft). Harold David Shaper discovered the song and added English lyrics in 1961. This song has been recorded by the British singer Matt Monro, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Elvis Presley, Michael Bublé and many others. After an introduction, the piece starts softly with the French Horn stating the melody with Trombone and Tuba accompanying. The two Trumpets join in and the whole ensemble builds gradually to a forte. The piece diminishes in volume and ends softly as it began. Doris Magaly Ruiz Lastres was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1941 . In 1981 she graduated with a degree in Composition from the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, where she studied with Harold Gramatges, CÉsar PÉrez Sentenat, JosÉ ArdÉvol, FÉlix Guerrero, Alfredo Diez Nieto, Dolores Torres and Roberto Valera. Since then, she has worked as a Professor at the Instituto as well as at the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique JosÉ Varona and the provincial school of music, Amadeo Roldán. She has been worked for many years as technical advisor of the subject Harmony in the Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, and technical advisor in the Centro para la Investigación y Desarrollo de la Música Cubana. Her curriculum is published in prestigious dictionaries such as The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and «Diccionario Iberoamericano de la Música». Several of her compositions are included as part of the curriculum of the leading music education institutions in Cuba, among them, the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, the Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique JosÉ Varona and Conservatorio Alejandro Garcia Caturla. Her compositions have been performed at many festivals such as the International Musical Festival, Festival de La Habana, Festival Boleros de Oro, International Festival of Contemporary Music, the International Festival Donne in Musica in Fiuggi, Italy and the Festival Sounds of Americas, New York, United States. She has received the First Award in the music contests Concurso La Edad de Oro, Concurso de la Dirección Nacional de Enseñanza ArtÃstica, Concurso Amadeo Roldán and the Concurso de la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba. She has also been awarded several medals and honours, among them The Medalla por la Educación Cubana, Medalla al MÉrito Pedagógico, Medalla JosÉ Tey, Distinción Especial of the Cuban Ministry of Education, and the Premio Anual de Composición of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba for lifetime achievement.

Mamma is a popular song composed in 1940 by Cesare Andrea Bixio with Italian lyrics by Bixio Cherubini under the title Mamma son tanto felice (Mum, I am so happy). In 1941, “Mamma†was used in a film starring the great operatic tenor, Beniamino Gigli, in the role of a famous tenor who returns home to Italy from the States with his American wife, just in time the meet his old mother who can finally die in peace. In 1946, English lyrics were written by Harold Barlow and Phil Brito who had their popular recording hit the charts in 1946 under the title of Mama. “Mamma†has found its place on many a classically trained singer’s rep list as an encore piece, or lighter fare for ethnic festivals and community engagement programs.  This arrangement is scored for high voice and uses both the original Italian and English texts.  Performance time: 2:30+-.
