Cecile Chaminade was one of the pioneers of women composers in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Her Havanaise Op. 57 was written for piano and published in 1905. The name, Havanaise, has to do with the people and their music in Havana, Cuba. The piece uses a habanera / tango rhythm throughout and frequently is written with three parts, making it ideal for a clarinet trio arrangement (2 Bb sopranos, 1 bass clarinet). A 3rd Bb clarinet may be substituted for the bass part although a bass is preferred.

"Prelude - Havana Promenade is the first movement in Margaret Brandman's 'Warm Winds in Havana' suite for Saxophone Quartet. The suite was recorded in Havana, Cuba by the Javier Zalba ensemble for the album ABRAZO on the Ansonica Label (ar0001). Arranged for beginner / intermediate saxophone quartet - soprano, alto, tenor & baritone - with each part having an alternate alto & tenor part allowing for groups with different combinations of instruments.

The arrangement may be a little challenging for the beginner, as there are some relatively involved rhythms, but it follows the original very closely so the students may well know the song. It would be fine for intermediate players.

The parts are copied and laid out very clearly to facilitate a fun, easy to play experience.

In addition, there is an optional piano accompaniment part. The part contains notation similar to the sax parts, so could act as a prompt. There are also large font chord symbols for variation or improvisation of the accompaniment. The part could also be handed out to a rhythm section for even more fun.
