Things were not the way I had imagined they would be. Now I had to go to work every day to pay the bills, and I didn't even like my job. It felt like I was bound in chains that were unbreakable. There seemed to be no way out, but there was a way out. All I had to do was accept that life had changed, that I had changed, and I needed to make the best of it. After making that decision life got better and better. I realized that the true plan for life was to create our own homes and families, and that sooner or later we will all return to our heavenly home. I love being home, and at the homes of my siblings, friends, and parents. Home is not really a physical place so much as it is where we are surrounded by people who love us. For me, being home is being where I am loved and accepted.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance: 1.You may come here to eat and to drink.Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. They have the moves to show off our licks. They came here to dance! Bridge – Instrumental section, followed by: Our band’s in the groove – here’s one reason why: The doghouse amps are turned up high. They get in there, and tear up the floor! And they don’t care if their feet get sore. 3. Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not. They came here to dance!4. Bridge again, then:Bustin’ our conks, we cats are hot, She is a wren who rocks him a lot! And they don’t care if we light up or not.They have the learning to, they have a yearning to,They came here to dance! Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. Published by Alex Schwarte (A0.1455537). I have been working on To Rise Again for about a year since the passing of several close family members. As with any long-term struggle, some days are easier than others, and some days it is hard to do much of anything at all. Walking through hard days, this piece is about mental health, the struggles that you face, and on the most difficult days, what it takes to rise again. Despair: This movement opens with what I call the despair motif. This motif consists of seven notes and will return throughout the piece, reminding us of uncertainty and darkness. The middle of the movement includes a build-up leading to a complete panic attack, featuring cluster chords in the piano and extreme volumes and articulation in the trombone. Finally, a quasi-march leads us to the end, where we sink to the lowest and angriest point. Support: This tranquil and shimmering movement evokes the other side of grief and depression: the people around you. In the dark moments, these people can become pillars of aid and light. Even with support, there are moments of darkness and uncertainty, but support will always be there. Musically, this movement features numerous color tones and aims to create an emotionally understanding and steady atmosphere. The opening trombone line (the support motif) represents tender support and is used numerous times in the next movement. Overcome: The final movement opens with a haunting atmosphere created by plucked piano strings. The first normal piano entrance is the Rumbling motif: the feeling of the soul exerting its will to be free but not quite making it. Throughout the rest of the movement, the trombone and piano go back and forth, with the piano emphasizing support and the trombone wallowing in despair. Eventually, the trombone begins to come around and rise. Concluding with a triumphant feeling of release, the mind is lifted from despair, free and open to whatever life brings next. Mental health looks different for everyone, and I want to reflect that in this composition. For all future performances, the performers can make significant musical changes to better reflect their own challenges. This could be as small as a different tempo or as large as a completely different style and articulation. At the time this piece was conceived, the world had fallen into chaos. We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

Spring and Summer follow with new life and a time when we can again enjoy nature at its fullest. Our own lives mirror similar cycles; sometimes we are faced with events bringing us sadness and despair and other times peace and joy. In the end Jesus and God's great love are our Spring and Summer. This piece attempts to portray this contrast, comparing the seasons to our own lives and reminding us that in the end We Have A Friend who helps us. The Music The piece begins with soloists portraying the seasons of the year and how they relate to our lives. A transition then occurs where we're reminded that when we are down and out, and we need a helping hand, we have a friend in the Lord Jesus.
