German.Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) is one of the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century. Apart from more than 100 organ works and masses, he also wrote numerous motets. The present four-part motet Freu dich, du werte Christenheit for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) was written in 1975. This old Resurrection song from the 16th century is based on a setting by the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes des Cleve (around 1529-1582) which has been skillfully transferred by Schroeder to the modern age with subtle harmonies. The tenor voice sings the cantus firmus and is embedded in archaic-seeming sounds typical of Schroeder by the other voices. This three-verse Resurrection song of about five minutes is perfect for church services at Easter.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2779). Hermann Schroeder (1904–1984) ranks among the major German organ composers of the 20th century, being an excellent organist himself. Many of his more than 100 organ works deal with themes of the Gregorian chorale which Schroeder appreciated very much. The chorale's modal diatonicism which is freer and different than the later major-minor tonality establishes a perfect symbiosis with the free tonality of the contemporary composer. Among the church modes, the 'tonus peregrinus' is the most interesting because it has two alternating reciting tones and therefore does not fit into the common pattern of the eight church modes. Since it 'modulates', it is a stranger, a 'peregrinus', among the tones – and therefore of special interest to composers. It forms the basis of the old Gregorian Magnificat, Bach used it in his Magnificat, Mozart in the introit of his requiem. Schroeder used the tonus peregrinus to achieve interesting harmonic and tonal effects, thus creating a virtuoso cycle of ten effective and colourful variations. A rewarding piece for church services and concerts.

Apart from his numerous church music works and organ compositions, the composer Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) from Cologne also wrote a large number of chamber music works. His recorder quartet 'Kommt, ihr G'spielen' was created for the competition 'Jugend musiziert' and performed for the first time at an award winners' concert in Münster. The classical instrumentation of SATB recorders can be changed by having the bass played by the great bass flute or the violoncello. The well-known dancing tune from the Renaissance period inspired Schroeder to write a series of lively variations full of brio: Var. 1 turns the head motif into a free fantasia, Var. 2 puts the melody as fugato, Var. 3 is an agitated, polyphonic trio (SAT) with lively semiquaver figures, Var. 4 is a cheerful gigue, Var. 5 concludes the entire cycle in a virtuoso manner. Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) wrote his Sonatina da camera at the suggestion of Prof. Hugo Ruf who had been looking for attractive new music for his 'old' instrument and for his students at the Cologne Musikhochschule. This work is a little three-movement sonata which draws on both the Baroque harpsichord tradition and the classical sonata form (in the outer movements). These elements are combined very successfully with a modern tonal language; with humour and the joy of virtuoso playing getting their fair share too. It is to be hoped that Schroeder's single work for harpsichord (apart from his 'Duplum' for organ and harpsichord, Schott ED 6233) will be played by many performers and included in the rather small contemporary repertoire for harpsichord as a valuable addition.

The premiere was performed by Clemens Ganz, then organist at the Cathedral of Cologne, in memory of the esteemed teacher and college colleague. The work marks the end of a tirelessly prolific life with more than one hundred organ works of various characters, genres and possibilities of use in liturgy and concerts. The title 'Concerto da chiesa' reveals that this is a work for concerts, not for being used in services. The three-movement composition is an unmistakable 'Schroeder' work: emphasis of linearity according to high baroque standards, conciseness and sometimes impulsive gestures of the themes and rhythms, layers of parallel chords within a freely tonal modern harmony, not forgetting the plasticity of form and the motor functions which are surprisingly energetic for an eighty-year-old.

For many decades, he conducted the Bach-Verein of Cologne and wrote numerous motets and masses, including 'Missa dorica' (Schott, C 33719). His liturgical choral works are deliberately easy to sing and are tailored to the needs and requirements of practical church music. He followed on from the art of classical vocal polyphony and gave the individual linear parts a life of their own in moderate modernity. In the five-movement chorale partita, the more than 1,000 years old Mixolydian Whitsun Sequence of Hrabanus Maurus (9th century) is used in an imaginative and formally varied way: as a virtuoso toccata, in the second movement 'ostinato' as a strict trio setting over a seven-bar ostinato in the pedal, as a capriciously playful 'bicinium', and as a meditative, harmonically appealing 'arioso'. The fifth movement (fantasia ricercare) displays brilliant full-handed chords and virtuoso passages as well as a fugato in the middle section. A rewarding concert piece for Whitsun, with an excellent possibility of virtuoso interpretation and colourful registration.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-84) is one of the leading German organ composers of the 20th century. Music for Organ was written in 1984 and explores the possibilities of tonality: the three movements are written in different keys, namely five-, seven- and twelve-tone systems (pentatonic, heptatonic and twelve-tone melody). However, the music always relates to a tonal centre, and the contrasting keys add to its special appeal. A great piece for concerts and competitions.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2375). Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) composed Organ Sonata No. 1 in 1957. Like many of his contemporaries (Ahrens, Bornefeld, Hessenberg, Pepping), he wrote his organ music under the influence of Bach and the so-called 'organ movement', providing hardly any information on the dynamics, articulation, phrasing or registration in the musical text. The former organist of the Cathedral of Cologne, Clemens Ganz, has added notes on interpretation to the present new edition which are based on his personal acquaintance with the composer and his experience of the performance practice. He indicates ways to authentically interpret the organ music of the 1950s.

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) is one of the best-known German organ composers of the 20th century. His late piano work Fünf Charaktere (1974) is based less on contrapuntal and neo-classical composition techniques (like the two early piano sonatas) but rather on the tonal possibilities of the piano. The five movements which live on the changes of different tempos and emotions bear titles that refer to the mood and the character of the music: Capriccio – Legende – Scherzando – Elegie – Burleske. Thus, the pieces are not far away from being Romantic character pieces. Fünf Charaktere is published as printed edition for the first time, based on the autograph left in the composer's estate.

He taught as a professor of music theory at the Conservatoire of Cologne and ranks among the most important German church and organ music composers of the 20th century. His extensive chamber music oeuvre which shows parallels to contemporary composers such as Hindemith, Genzmer or Pepping is little known. The Quintet Op. 50 is characterised by its neoclassical form, free tonality as well as rhythm in motion, setting the performer rewarding instrumental tasks. The Wind Quintet Op. 50 was composed in 1981 and is now published for the first time. The movements are: 1. Molto sostenuto/Allegro - 2. Adagio molto - 3. Scherzo - 4. Lento/Allegro.

Latin.Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. A demanding work for good choirs, duration ca. 16 minutes.
