In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

Legend has it that this old tune was discovered written on a scrap of paper found in a bottle which washed up on a beach in North Wales around 1900; its Welsh nickname Ton-y-Botel (Tune in a Bottle) comes from this story. The melody is also known as Ebenezer, named for Ebenezer Chapel where the actual composer attended services while writing this tune. Lyrics in sacred and secular contexts alike have been set to this famous melody. This dramatic piece begins with the arranger's original music rising in a theme accompanied by triplets, then moves into the powerful Welsh tune itself which in this creative arrangement is tossed from voice to voice, hand to hand. A strong sense of the love of Jesus rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me as well as a tender confidence in it underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love are the lingering emotions one feels as the same original music closes the piece with an impression of wonder. Some fingerings are included to facilitate reading but are merely suggestions. Pedaling has been written in, but again, is a suggestion. Because of its history, this music is adaptable to almost any circumstance, secular or sacred, where people gather for meaningful events: civic or military ceremonies, graduations, memorials, weddings, or church services of any denomination.

The first tune by Webb and the better known was published in the US prior to the civil war and continues to be a popular and rousing selection The second tune by Geibel was published near the end of the century and appears beside Webb's tune in many hymnals. The songwriting and poetry of Verna May Hall Linzey portrays her philosophy of life that made her an American English icon. The Triumphant Quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award and has been voted as the number one quartet in Southern Gospel Music for several years in a row.In 2015, Verna received the Best-Selling Author’s Award from the National Critics’ Choice as the translator of Proverbs for the Modern English Version Bible. The MEV has been in the top ten-selling English Bible translations in 2015 according to the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association. Verna is the Chief Editor of the New Tyndale Version Bible translation.On Sunday, May 8, 2016, a commemorative edition of the Modern English Version Bible was presented to the Queen, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, at Windsor Castle by Verna Linzey, the translation committee, and her publisher. Verna was subsequently named “Mother of the Fleet” by Admiral Frederick C. Johnson, USN (Ret.) and his staff of Navy and Marine officers at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California. In 2018, she posthumously received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Her husband, Captain Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., CHC, USN (Ret.) was a World War II hero as a survivor of the USS Yorktown as a sailor when it was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Battle of Midway.

Arranged for Brass Quartet, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today was first written in Latin titled Surrexit Christus hodie, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in Munich and Breslau. In Latin, it had eleven verses. It was first translated into English in 1708 by John Baptist Walsh to be included in his Lyra Davidica (Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation; in 1740 Charles Wesley (one of the founders of Methodism) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having Alleluia as a refrain after every line.The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled Easter Hymn which was composed in the Lyra Davidica for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. There was a later version of Easter Hymn composed by William Henry Monk which is also used for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The hymn is sometimes confused with Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, which was written by Wesley.
