(Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are roughly equivalent to SSAA, although lead and baritone have similar - in this case, identical! - ranges, but perform different functions). A Little Respect was written and recorded by English synth-pop duo Erasure, and is known as one of their signature songs. It reached #4 on the UK singles chart, #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #2 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. This arrangement uses words from the song in place of neutral vowels to create an early ostinato (without boring the harmony parts!) before expanding into homorhythm in verse 2. The melody is mainly in the lead part, with the final motif from the chorus passed to the tenors. In the final verse, a key change moves the melody to the basses and baritones, with the leads taking the final phrase. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. However, the range of the entire arrangement is quite narrow, and so it could be sung in a higher tessitura without undo strain on the upper voices. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - F5 (D above middle C to F above high C) Lead: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to high C) Bass: D3 - F4 (D below middle C to F above middle C).

Published by OLIVIER COSTA (A0.993444). « AMITIÉ » is a composition of about six minutes long for a women's choir (SSAA). It can also be performed by a male choir (TTBB), in this case the singers must read in octabassa treble clef. This piece sets to music a selection of poems based on friendship, taken from the collection Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d´Orphée by Guillaume Apollinaire. We will hear The cat, The peacock, The owl and The ox. The bond of friendship is symbolized here by an element of percussion: the friction of a metal chain, played by the members of the choir from the beginning to the end of the piece. This implies that the choir must use a stand or sing in pairs, one holding the sheet music and the other playing the string. This work explores different vocal techniques: singing, sliding, timbre play, murmuring, rhythmic speaking, declaiming and shouting. These different modes of vocal play are combined with different compositional techniques such as polyrhythm, homorhythmia, rhythmic irregularity, counterpoint, opposition and layering of sound planes. FRIENDSHIP is the second part of a cycle devoted to the work of Apollinaire.

This fourth booklet is dedicated to ensemble playing through five trios and three quartets of various styles (tango, ballad, rock, etc.) appropriate for the end of primary school with a few years of experience and the beginning of secondary school. Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. Many of them are musicians from different backgrounds (composition, performance, world music, etc.), which explains the creativity found in the pieces. This Abba classic has a simple form with really fun vocal line solos for all the instruments and a great beat, which the cello and viola hold down for the majority of the song. This arrangement starts with an intro that uses homorhythmic material with tight harmonies that imitate the feel of the original Abba music video.  As the song launches into the first verse, the viola and cello team up playing the “Take a Chance†rhythmic figure, emulating the chanted words from the song, with the violin on melody. The viola takes the melody on the first half of the chorus, then hands it off to the cello which has a brief section in tenor clef. The song repeats and fades out on the chorus.  Bowings and rehearsal letters are included for ease of sight-reading, ideal for gigging performances. This version has been arranged a half step down (the original song was written in B Major, and I adjusted the key to B-flat Major so that it’s a bit friendlier to string players).

A super-jazzy arrangement of this uptempo swing song as sung by Clare Teal, this is one that is fiendishly challenging, but worthy of an attempt by established SSAA a cappella groups who are experienced and confident with the swing genre. The arranger, the late Jen Mills, was an accomplished jazz musician as well as a barbershop singer and LABBS Music Judge. Scored for male chorus (alto, tenor, baritone and bass), Surrender was created as a gift for Stevens and premiered as part of the 2007 Delian Suite No. 3 (May 2007). Ford's setting is based on quintal harmonies in which chords are constructed in perfect fifths (instead of the usual thirds), a technique which imbues the music with an austere, timeless quality. The movement consists in a series of choral statements in homorhythmic chordal style of the word surrender in its original and successively truncated forms, with each statement followed by an elucidating observation made by the altos. In this manner, the significance of the poem, which evokes the dissolution of the ego center, is clearly communicated. The lone letter s, which is ultimately all that remains of the word surrender, is here prolonged to imply the sound of a distant wave or gentle gust of wind-the action of emptiness. The final line of the poem is not sung but calmly spoken.

The counterpoint and melodic solos of the first section contrast the lively meter changes and homorhythmic texture of the second section. The work as inspired by and derives its title from the 17th-century French carol Un flambeau. An alternative scoring for full orchestral brass (4.3.3.1) is available. "Personent Hodie" is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts. Arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst (1874?1934), it is often used as a processional hymn in church and cathedral services. The text is translated by "James M. Joseph," a pseudonym of the composer Jane M. Joseph (1894?1929).
