Honky-Tonk Rag has that old honky-tonk piano sound and is one of 6 pieces written in the traditional ragtime style of the great Scott Joplin. Using little or no RH double octave work, these rags were composed to help the intermediate level student gain confidence with the difficult stride bass technique. The bass must remain steady for the right hand syncopation to be effective. The given fingering works well but is a suggested one only and can be altered to suit the performer. Intermediate/Grade 4-5 level.

Scott Joplin 1868 – 1917 was an American composer and pianist and dubbed the King of Ragtime He composed more than 40 ragtime pieces, a ragtime ballet and two operas. One of his first and most popular pieces, the Maple Leaf Rag, became the genre's first and most influential hit. Joplin considered ragtime to be a form of classical music to be played in concert venues and largely distanced himself from the performance style of honky-tonk music mostly played in saloons.Weeping Willow is a 1903 classic piano ragtime composition by Joplin and it was one of Joplin's simpler and less well known ragtime scores. Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music. The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â    But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.    Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three†composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.    Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.    One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.†(The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.      This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Elton himself was well versed in honky tonk, pub piano styles and the chord progression is very accepting of this treatment. If some of the voicings ie 10ths are too large for your left hand simply play single bass notes or octaves instead, or feel free to roll the tenths. Please note this is a piano solo and I haven't notated any of the other instruments in my YouTube arrangement. I do, however, write my arrangements for solo piano first and they sound perfect as such. I don't include fingering, phrasing or dynamic marking as no two piano teachers will agree upon so I leave this trustingly to the individual performer. I do include chord symbols which I find more helpful in learning repertoire.Have fun playing this. I did. I'm a big Elton John fan and this is one of my favourite numbers of his and it was a pleasure to notate it.

A departure from my usual 2-piano arrangements of classical repertoire, I felt that this irresistible song from 1929 just had to be arranged for ambitious solo pianists who have moments when they want to have some fun. After all, good music is good music, whatever mood you're in!I started my career playing simple versions of this kind of music by ear, and despite becoming dedicated to the classical musical world, I've never lost my admiration for the musicality and technical assuredness of many ragtime, honky-tonk and jazz pianists of 100 years ago. The best of their music is truly inspiring.The tempo I have chosen is livelier than 'Fats' Waller's own performance of the song, where he sings to his own piano accompaniment. It's more like the tempo of Louis Armstrong's inimitable version on trumpet.
