Shirley Erena Murray.While not much concerned about posterity, I offer this collection for the here and now, as a kind of spiritual autobiography of the years since writing 'Touch the Earth Lightly' (Hope, 2009). The themes will tell you that I have not ceased to centre on peace, partnered with justice, as these related to our own faith journey. But now that I find my life further away from the church and closer to what Jesus is actually pointing to, new elements come into play. Here is one: I have used the words of the hymn 'A Place at the Table' as title for this book, because there are still Christian people not welcome, either at the communion table or at the common table of society. . . . Creating justice and joy means walking into the territory of basic human rights, as Jesus did. It means being aware of our own fragility as well as our planet's, and using technology wisely. . . . Because I live in a highly secular society in Aotearoa/New Zealand, I am conscious of how the stereotypes of Christianity can be cynically dismissed. I long to say that there is so much to understand and embrace in the wisdom, spiritual treasury and survival skills that Jesus has given the world. It is also an interfaith and interactive world I live in, so some of these texts reflect my hope for the 'care and connection making us kin' that seems imperative for our human survival. . . . Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery. It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents. Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom. Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage. They sang hopefully: Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus! Steal away, steal away home, I ain't got long to stay here. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. Or would you just go ontirelessly? Do you really feel happy when chasing after those things?And what will you get by the end of your life?I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. (Ecclesiastes 1:14)The piece is inspired by the book of Ecclesiastes from the Bible. Musically, it is inspired by a traditional Japanese theatricalperformance Kabuki. It is purely musical theatre: the piece unfolds with the wheezing of hollowness of work and life, andit is followed by a wild dance of chase -- a chase after fame and fortune in hopes of getting rid of the depression. Yet, thestruggle only brings fleeting pleasure and pressing anxiety to chase after another goal. Feeling exhausted, one realizes thatwhat one has done are all meaningless: the hollowness never goes away. Only after a hoarse cry does one start to realize themeaning of life, a meaning that transcends all materialistic goals; and only after understanding the reason to live can one take abreath of life.There are references to traditional Japanese instrumental writings, including the sound of Shamisen imitated by pizzicato instrings, drum imitated by pizzicato chords and beating of strings on fingerboard, Japanese flute imitated by the high oboe. Theshifting focus between different musical layers represents the movement of the imaginary dancer who moves forward andbackward on the stage unceasingly.ABreath of Life was commissioned by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild.

One of the most popular jazz standards ever written, Dorothy Fields providing the lyrics. First sung in the film 'Swing Time' by Fred Astaire to Ginger Rogers but covered by such legends as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet and more recently by Michael Buble and Phil Collins.My version is a Stride Piano version but owes the tempo and the right hand just a little bit to Erroll Garner and I take it through the 2 keys of Eb major and F major.I haven't included fingering, dynamics or pedal markings as I prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two piano teachers would ever agree on such things. Please note this is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments that feature on my YouTube video. It was written, however, like all my compositions and arrangements, as a piano solo and sounds perfect as such. The left hand, being stride has a very full sound. Any tenths in the left hand can easily be converted to single notes or octaves for those with smaller hands.I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed arranging it.

But regardless of the actual interpretation for those words, this arrangement just wouldn’t be remotely authentic if it didn’t sound like a steam train. So hopefully, it does!This piece starts in the key of F, and the lower three parts generate a pulse which mimics the power-stroke of a steam locomotive. There’s a train whistle too - the top three parts sound an augmented chord - you might like to slide up into the chord, or fall down the neck after the chord is resolved. Or just play it as written...In the centre, the music rises a semitone then another semitone, picking up speed as it does so, playing the same music a tone higher. At the end of the piece, the music slows, and slows and slows to a standstill with a final bass G to tell the audience that the train has stopped...Before the train picks up speed, there is a gentle choral section, and the dynamic markings will show you where the tune moves about.The amount you choose to pick up speed is entirely your choice - the occasional strange number in the metronome mark is simply the result of my typesetting software performing a long, steady speed change.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

I hope everyone has been doing well during this crazy time. Originally I wrote these preludes as parts of composing exercises for Alan Belkin's book Music Composition: Craft and Art. They sat around for a bit until during the quarantine when I took a look at them again. I realized that these pieces had a lot of character to them, and they were quite distinct in nature. The first movement is a simple ternary form piece which begins and ends in the key of g minor and has a very neo-romantic tonal space. The B section is a brisk, more straight-forward tonal texture, but has a fun little twist sequencing up near the end of the section. The second movement was composed with the B vs Bb dichotomy functioning as a germinating cell for the rest of the movement's material. More impressionistic and mysterious than the other two movements, it also lacks a more traditional formal structure, instead relying on the development of motivic cells to make the movement cohere together in a logical way. The third movement is also a modified ternary movement, but with the A sections being played at different speeds, and the second A ending having an outro section attached. The B section is also more like a sonata form developmental section (without the required tonic-dominant modulatory feature). This movement is not only tonally very colorful, but also dynamic in regards to tempo, slowing and quickening often, giving the piece a continual sense of renewed spirit. Rather than just release the preludes as seperate pieces, I found that when played in a certain sequence, they represent a progression of mental and spiritual being that many people have, including myself, been going through during this time. As such, I made them into a suite. If it brings you a little bit of joy or excitement during this time (and after this is over), that's all that I can hope for.

First and foremost, the music is very much intended to support the lyrical content of this song.Throughout the song, the key switches from major to minor (both parallel and relative) quite frequently. The piece starts with a very free section with almost no tempo alternating between just voices and simple piano accompaniment. The middle sections have stricter tempo and more active piano accompaniment and the final section increases in speed and excitement with piano truly accompanying the voices instead of just mostly mirroring them. Throughout the piece, meter always follows word stress so there are a surprising number of time signature changes with lyrical clarity always being more important than strict meter. All that said, the rhythms are not too difficult throughout the song and while there are some dissonant harmonies, the musical lines themselves should be singable by most intermediate choirs. The most challenging voice part is probably the tenor 1 line which spends a lot of time in the higher ranges. There are a few optional parts for the tenor 1s that will truly test the range of the singers.

When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances.
