Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or dawn song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. A song for the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences, camping in Northern Canada, a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Programme Notes: It is said that the darkest hour of the night comes just before the dawn. – Thomas Fuller Mornings are powerful and evocative moments. The chorus of birds, one species after another, unite in a wild and genuine polyphony while the dew and mist evaporate upon the rising of the sun, encouraging goosebumps and shivers from an open window, tempered or exhilarated by a cup of coffee. Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or Dawn Song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. Tommy Dorsey released a hit recording of it the same year, but it was in the postwar years that the song gained its greatest success. This paper proposes a sketch-version of a unifying beginners’ cost-effective teaching/learning method for any fretted string instrument (like ukulele, guitalele, mandolin and guitar) using the same 4-strings tuning which may be also used to teach/learn the basic music theory and practice elements: more specifically, the standard tuning of the central 4 strings of the guitar may be applied (non-standardly!) to all the other cited smaller (thus more portable) instruments (like ukulele, guitalele and mandolin) which may be used either independently/separately or as preparatory instruments for the purpose of teaching guitar (and music theory) after that first teaching/learning phase on a smaller instrument (or on a 4-strings guitar). This unifying method may largely open the horizons of children (and beginners in general, to experience more than one instrument) and may also help poor children/persons (who don’t afford a guitar) to be taught the guitar basics (including important elements of music theory) on much cheaper (smaller) instruments (who are generally much more accessible): that is why this method also addresses to all music teaching systems from all poor countries worldwide. For those who have a guitar or a guitalele and want to apply this method, they may easily remove the 1st and the 6th guitar/guitalele strings (E4 and E2): the resting nucleus composed from the 4 central strings is sufficient to teach/learn all the basic theoretical and practical notions of guitar (or any other fretted string instrument) and music in general. This paper also contains some examples of songs (written in English and Romanian languages) with included chords (aka tabulatures), each song displayed in one tonality (C major or its relative A minor) or two tonalities (C major [/A minor] and G major [/ E minor]) which can then be altered by using a capodastro (aka capo) to fit any tonality and thus fit the ambitus and tessitura (the most acceptable and comfortable vocal range) of any child/adult voice. This fourth booklet is dedicated to ensemble playing through five trios and three quartets of various styles (tango, ballad, rock, etc.) appropriate for the end of primary school with a few years of experience and the beginning of secondary school. Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. Many of them are musicians from different backgrounds (composition, performance, world music, etc.), which explains the creativity found in the pieces.
