Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF184). 9 x 12 in inches.Der Leiermann, translated as The Hurdy-Gurdy Player, is the final song from Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise, a work that follows the protagonist as he visits sites of a past summer love in what is now the dead of winter. This song's text describes the lonely hurdy-gurdy player standing at the edge of the village, barefoot in the ice and attempting to play despite numb fingers, extreme hunger, and societal alienation, and the speaker wonders aloud if his sadness and loneliness might make them kindred spirits. Schubert's music includes droning modal figures designed to evoke the sounds of the hurdy-gurdy, overlaid with a sad, simple melody. This transcription for clarinet quartet rotates the melody through the ensemble, giving equal weight to each of its four members. The transcription was originally completed as part of a set of adaptations from Schubert's Lieder; when grouped with the other transcriptions in the set (Gretchen am Spinnrade, Die Forelle, and Mut) it functions well as the slow movement in a suite.

Der Leiermann (The Organ Grinder)This is the final song in Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle, and tells the story of a poet encountering a hurdy-gurdy player busking in the snow. An atmosphere of absolute bleakness and despair should be conjured up by any performance of this song, as the song’s main character completes his lonely ‘winter’s journey’ and deterioration of his mental state. The chromatic grace notes in the introduction are supposed to represent the sound of a hurdy-gurdy being warmed up, and the open A string played thereafter is meant to evoke the hurdy-gurdy’s drone strings; so ensure it is allowed to ring clearly whilst playing the main figure on the higher strings. The guitar part is relatively simple, but it needs to be played with absolute precision and dynamic control; the extensive use of the open position allows the guitar’s natural resonance to come through. This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

It is a Level 3+ piece that is mostly swing while still having a sea shanty feel to it. The gyro technique evokes the sound of the hurdy-gurdy used in the original.Black Sails is a TV show about pirates that blends historical pirates and characters from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, becoming a prequel to that story.This is a strong and aggressive piece that is very rhythmic and fun to perform. Folksy was written for violist Leanne Darling, who has a strong classical background and also plays Arabic music, jazz and popular music. It is 5 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced students. The piece draws on the folk-style music that I played in the NYC subways. It is meant to evoke a hurdy-gurdy. Much of the time the melody is accompanied by a drone that becomes more and more rhythmic as the piece progresses. Variations on the 15th century Christmas carol Noel Nouvelet which is in the Dorian mode (often sung as Sing We Now of Christmas or as the Easter hymn Now the green blade riseth in English speaking countries). I have provided several variations here, including versions with drone (reminiscent of bagpipes or hurdy gurdy), comic and curious rhythmical alternatives, soloing in the bass part and various harmonic curiosities. Key: D major.As there are only relatively few baroque works for descant recorder, this sonata by Boismortier should attract the interest of both players and teachers. The first edition published in Paris in 1730 contained compositions for various melodic instruments (flute, recorder, oboe, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipe) among which the Sonata, originally written in G major, is particularly suited for descant recorder. Without the slightest change for the descant (or tenor) recorder, it was transposed to D major. A rewarding piece for concert performances and music lessons.

PATAPAN - traditional carol - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.There are TWO ARRANGEMENTS in this one edition.Derek Hasted writes This Burgundian Carol, first published in 1720, usually has four verses in the French version and three in the English. This arrangement has three verses, all in slightly different styles.The melody and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics are together meant to symbolise the fife (“Ture-lure-luâ€) and the drum (“Pata-pata-panâ€).In both arrangements Guitar One has melody, and it fits nicely in a mix of IV and V position. There is no fingering, because your ensemble might want to choose between two different approaches...A less experienced ensemble might prefer to venture up the neck just to reach for the A and B notes, and return to the first position as soon as possible...A more experienced group might want to stay up the neck to get a more rounded tone throughout. Depending on your choice of fingering, slurs might be possible to improve the flow.There are two versions of the lower parts. In the first arrangement, in “SATB†style, Guitar 4 plays the bass; Guitar 3 provides, in the three verses, percussion, a choral countermelody, and finally a Hurdy-Gurdy style drone; Guitar provides a countermelody.In the second arrangement, the roles rotate at the end of each verse, so that all the accompanying players have three very different verses to play. Guitar 1 stays with the tune, because in a mixed ability ensemble, moving the tune about tends to highlight any weaknesses. This arrangement highlights the strengths!Percussion (the X-headed notes) works well if you tap the guitar near the bridge to get a deep bass drum.At the end, the brave amongst you can shout “Patapan†to bring the piece to a surprise conclusion...I hope you enjoy this piece!

With his piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874, Mussorgsky created a classic example of programme music. Based on the paintings of his deceased friend Viktor Hartmann, he also composed the lyrical serenade 'Il vecchio castello' (The Old Castle), among others. Hartmann's picture shows a medieval Italian castle with a singing troubadour who accompanies himself on the lute. In Maurice Ravel's subsequent famous orchestral version, the beautiful, melancholy melody was played by the alto saxophone. Accompaniment, prelude and interludes are reminiscent of playing a medieval hurdy-gurdy with its pervading drone bass. Therein lies the continuity of the piece, thereabove lies the quiet romance with its melancholy character – the unrequited love of the troubadour. This separate edition now gives all saxophonists the opportunity to play the piece with piano accompaniment.
