2 Pianos,4 Hands,Piano Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972673 Composed by James Siddons. Contemporary,Folk,Jazz,Spiritual. Score. 25 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #6698569. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972673). Performance NoteSonata Hymnica No. 6 is scored for two pianos and three performers. One performer (or player) sits at Piano I and may also serve as the conductor. At Piano II, Performer 1 plays from the treble staff and Performer 2 plays from the bass staff. There are possible variations in this, such as having four pianos (two pianos doubling the other two), or having two performers at Piano I, with Performer 2 playing only the bass-staff rhythmic pattern that begins in measure 37. A standing conductor (not playing piano) may be desired.  Although repetitive, the music in this sonata rarely repeats itself exactly; hence, further minor improvisations by the performers are appropriate, keeping with the improvisatory nature of oral tradition. Program Note (for use in concert programs) by James Siddons  The Sonata Hymnica series by James Siddons consists of piano solos that explore the world of American hymns and vernacular religious songs in the 1880-1920 era, when rural and small-town churches relied on pianos for music, and, in an age before microphones and amplification, the acoustics of wooden floors, walls, and high ceilings. These sonatas are not hymn arrangements but explorations of the sounds that can be created by a piano in a reverberant environment, all the while keeping in mind the essential message of the familiar words sung to the various hymn tunes. Sonata Hymnica No. 6 is the first in the series to be for piano ensemble, and the second (after No. 3) to be based on the worship music of the 19th-century African American church. This sixth sonata also explores the singing world of the black congregation and choir as well as the piano. Their singing was shaped by the sounds and intonations of the piano and the heritage of European music behind it, as well as the contours and cadences of the religious folk songs known as Spirituals. But the black congregations also sang hymns and choruses from the Classical tradition, and the Spirituals became the basis of many adaptations by white arrangers. Thus, we may speak of standardized adaptations of Spirituals as white black music, and black performance styles of Classical works as black white music. Piano ragtime music is a non-religious example of white music (the military march) made into black white music by the blending in of the syncopated rag rhythm. Sonata Hymnica No. 6 explores the intermingling of these two strains of American music as heard in the 19th-century black church. In his classic book The Souls of Black Folk (Chicago, 1903), W. E. B. Du Bois confesses to not being a musician but nonetheless finding himself enthralled by the music of the Southern 19th-century African Americans. He refers to their singing as the Frenzy or ‘Shouting,’ when the Spirit of the Lord passed by, and seizing the devotee, made him mad with supernatural joy . . . stamping, shrieking, and shouting, the rushing to and fro and waving of arms, the weeping and laughing, the vision and the trance (p. 116). On another page, Du Bois speaks of . . . the songs of my fathers . . . swelling with song, instinct for life, tremendous treble and darkening bass (p. 163). Sonata Hymnica No. 6 uses the African call and response form as well as percussive polyrhythms.

Theme and Variations-Accompaniment Track, Dan CutchenTime: approximately 6:00And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year. This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring. And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation. And Can It Be That I Should Gain. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719736 Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 12 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573109. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719736). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart, Just As I Am, without One Plea, and Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name.

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1042625 Composed by Todd Marchand. Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. Con Spirito Music #647400. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1042625). Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England. This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ. The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm. Dynamic contrasts (crescendi and decrescendi) throughout follow the rising and falling of the melodic line and should be carefully observed. ©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic. Brass Ensemble Euphonium - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813708 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 9 pages. Regis Bookshar #6474537. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813708). Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets) (Euphonium Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Holst's The Planets, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals but if you are considering using this selection for church services in which a congregation may sing along, I would suggest that you look for the arrangements of either I Vow to Thee, My Country, O God, Beyond All Praising, O Spirit All Embracing or Thaxted, also by Regis Bookshar. They are all based on the same excerpt from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets. These arrangements are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these selections as well. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (9 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Euphonium Quintet, written in Bass Clef, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. There is also a version for a Euphonium Quintet written in Treble Clef, if you would prefer. There are Quintets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautif.

This valuable collection of hymns is just the first in a series of five! These are wonderful titles , from well-known favorites that many grew up with, to songs that are lesser known yet equally important. These tunes have the added benefit of being arranged in keys that are accessible to most vocal ranges, which is especially helpful when playing along with congregational singing. Arrangements are interesting and have lovely harmonies. Lever changes are indicated with diamond shaped notes. Some tunes have no lever changes, some have a lot. The left hand in a few of the tunes is quite active. An enormous amount of harp work for these 72 tunes.<br> Table of Contents: At the Lamb's High Feast,Hallelujah, What a Savior!,There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood, I Will Sing of My Redeemer, Am I a Soldier of the Cross?,I Know That My Redeemer Lives, Redeemed, My Faith Looks Up to Thee, Let Us Love, and Sing, and Wonder, Rejoice! Woodwind Ensemble Bassoon - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813702 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards,Wedding. 9 pages. Regis Bookshar #6474015. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813702). Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets) (Bassoon Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version and this version for a Bassoon Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Jupiter based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav.

Starke in 1999.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to the Trumpet Quintet version, and this version for a Viola Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Jupiter based on the Andante Maestoso section from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from Gustav Hol.

Jupiter (Andante Maestoso from Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets) (Tenor Saxophone Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download.
