The melody came to me and I hummed it into my mobile phone to make sure I didn't lose it! I planned to work up a more complex piece, but in the end I loved the simplicity of the melody and opted to form a short simple piece around it.

Key: Db major.This is a note-for-note transcription of the October 31, 1963 trio recording of Horace Silverâ€™s tune Que Pasa. It is notated for piano, bass and drums, although the bass is a three-note figure that hardly ever varies. For his improvisations, Horace employed a call-and-response pattern between his two hands, with little overlap. This means that the solo pianist can play the string bass part with her left hand while handling both piano staves with her right. Horace observed, â€œWe never used this trio version but I really like this earlier version. I approached it differently in that I didnâ€™t always resolve it when I was improvising. Itâ€™s different and I like it.â€ See bar 67 for an example of his reluctance to resolve. To create Que Pasa, Horace took the first line of Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It (â€œHolding hands at midnightâ€) and put a samba bassline underneath. It is written in the theoretical key of Db minor, together with the non-diatonic chords G13 and F13. The tune stayed in his bandbook for the next three years and has become something of a mini-standard over the years.

Nu Tal (Mi Tierra) or My Land, is one of my first orchestral works, commissioned by Dr. Irving Ramirez, associate conductor of the El Salvadorâ€™s Symphony Orchestra.At the beginning, the idea was to set four small sketches of different images from my country. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didnâ€™t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely SÃ¡nchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the workâ€™s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvadorâ€™s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. I wrote it onÂ very cloudy day and that is all I can remember about it.III - Happy Times is a reduction of the same piece in my Piano Sonata: Blue. IV - Dance - This movement is a dance of death. It is very obvious that something has gone wrong and there is no chance of fixing it.V - Taking Turns - The title is self -explanatory. Originally this was going to be the beginning of a mini quartet but I decided against it. VI - Death March - This is a feeling I know all to well. It is held together by the canonical wandering melody that attempts to shine through the dark.

At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I donâ€™t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emmaâ€™s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didnâ€™t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didnâ€™t want to call because I knew sheâ€™d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldnâ€™t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that itâ€™s structurally sound. I didnâ€™t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed. I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldnâ€™t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I canâ€™t even now remember why, which means it canâ€™t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat. So I guess it did its job, but now itâ€™s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

With pronounced usage of the pentatonic scale, Syzygy invokes my personal love of Chinese orchestra (as well as some genre fusion to spice up the general aesthetic). I was sixteen when I wrote this, my first large-scale piece, and therefore was very fond of it; but I never got so big for my britches that I didn't ask for help. After making that decision life got better and better. I realized that the true plan for life was to create our own homes and families, and that sooner or later we will all return to our heavenly home. I love being home, and at the homes of my siblings, friends, and parents. Home is not really a physical place so much as it is where we are surrounded by people who love us. For me, being home is being where I am loved and accepted.

Each person will completethe sentence with the destiny of their choice.<br> <br> - TwopennyLoaf: This is a neighborhood (and geographically a cape) in the city ofGloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. It is believed to have gotten itsname because it is shaped like a (bread) loaf that at the time cost twopennies.<br> <br> - ThreeBridges: It is a city somewhere between London and Brighton, and a nodalpoint where trains typically split. Musically, the most minimalistic of all thecycle.<br> <br> - Four Oaks:There are numerous places so named, both in England and the US, and possibly inother countries. I can imagine that there were actually four oak trees planted near.<br> <br> - FivePointz: Neighborhood in Queens, New York. A graffiti mecca that wasdemolished in 2014 to build expensive buildings. And yes, it is spelled with zin this case.<br> <br> - Six MileBottom: Is a hamlet near Cambridge in England. The hamlet derives its namefrom its distance from the start of Newmarket Racecourse and because it lies ina valley bottom. There is no public transport. The old train station, closed in1967 for lack of use, is now a private residence.<br> <br> - SevenKings: It is a neighborhood in Ilford, East London. The earliest recordeduse of the name is as Sevekyngg or Sevekyngges in 1285, possibly meaning'settlement of the family or followers of a man called Seofoca'<br> <br> - EightStreets: it is a (very sought-after) neighborhood located in the heart ofthe historic South End of the city of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.<br> <br> - Nine Elms:a district of South West London. Nine Elms Lane was named around the year 1645,from a row of elm trees bordering the road.<br> <br> - Ten TenRoad: it is a place -actually the main road- in the town of Apex, NorthCarolina, USA.<br> <br> - ElevenLands: this place is mentioned in an old legal report from around 1782 asexisting in North London ("a place called Eleven Lands, containing fiveacres of arable, formerly Cosby's, beonging to a farm in the said parish ofBletcheley...", in " Acollection of the Reports of Cases, the Statutes, and Ecclesiastical Laws,relating to Tithes", volume 3). The truth is that - incredibly as it mayseem - I didn't find any place called "Twelve" something. Yes thereare such names in other languages, but I wanted to keep some consistency.
