This is a meditative arrangement of a well known Norwegian hymn. The arrangement sets three verses of the melody 'bookended' by a mirrored introduction and coda. It was originally written for trumpet sextet and performed by the cornet section of the Band of the Welsh Guards, before being expanded to military (wind) and brass band formats.In the hymn, one sings of a hopeful final journey to a place without worry or sorrow. The arrangement reflects the mood of these three verses, with increaing tension and movement through ascending lines as the journey progresses towards a final resting place. The hymn is regularly used at funerals and memorial services. The text was originally old German and translated to Norwegian by Bernt Støyland in 1905. Translated to English, the text reads as:I know a castle in heaven above,shining as bright as the sun;you'll find no sin nor sorrow there,and never a tear is shed. I am a weary traveller;may my path lead mefrom here to my Father's land;God, bless me on my way. We thank you for eternityGod the Father, one in three.For you are gentle and mild to us in Jesus Christ! Amen. Note to conductors:The opening and closing sections require precision in the start and release of notes for the chord progression to function. Attention to detail should be paid to each individual crescendi, diminuendi and articulation. This is excellent training for even the best of bands!An optional vocal part is provided in both Norwegian and English, but the arrangement functions with or without it. Cues are written for important lines should players be missing, otherwise many of the parts are doubled across the band. Therefore this arrangement should be playable by bands from approximately 2nd/3rd division upwards even if some players are missing.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMW227). 9 x 12 inches.“Paris Without You is a piece for solo tenor saxophonist and orchestra with jazz quartet accompaniment. By way of introduction of the piece, in 2012, I met my wife, and very early on we had different trips planned. I was going to visit family and Cindy was going back to Paris, a place she had visited many times. So it was that we were almost literally a world apart. Upon both our returns, Cindy shared her many photos of Paris with me, a place I have never been. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

Yes, I had the Bee Gees on LP when I was a kid.…and ABBA…but I left them out of this piece.Obviously, this is meant to be fun. There are direct (if not always obvious) quotations to the following songs:       Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bellâ€Â       “Night Fever†by the Bee Gees       Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive†(Just had to be included)       Lipps Inc’s “Funktownâ€Â       and “Boogie Nights†from HeatwaveThe ancient dance form known as the pavane is, weirdly enough, the perfect pairing with the disco…in that their rhythmic structures easily go together, allowing me to spread the disco material around throughout the piece. In fact, the references to “I Will Survive†are in the slower pavane section, not the disco.The piece is basic A-B-A form (Disco-Pavane-Disco) with a fadeout ending…because in all my research I don’t remember finding a single disco piece that didn’t have a fadeout ending. If I Were a Bell is a song from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls, based on Damon Runyan stories from Broadway in the prohibition era. Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

'I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In)' arrangement for solo guitar by Antony Cull.IntroductionThis arrangement is aimed at intermediate level guitarists with a good control of natural harmonics and basic fingerstyle. The whole piece has the harmonic structure written in the chords above, which can be strummed by another player to turn the piece into a duet. Alternatively you can use these chords to accompany a singer and add the solo guitar arrangement as a introduction.Performance NotesThe first section outlines the basic harmony, often omitting notes from the chords above, to outline the melody. To keep each section distinct, keep the pace of this section slow and expressive.The next section has a celtic inspired feel, with the constant quavers throughout to drive the piece forward. Note the increase in tempo, but adjust to a comfortable speed for your ability as you are mostly aiming to play faster then the introduction. Practice this section slowly at first, taking time to choose the most comfortable finger position. Once you have the fingering locked in, work on making the melody pop out from the over all picking pattern, relax the attack on the thumb to help this.The third section uses natural harmonics to play the melody. To play a natural harmonic place you fretting finger lightly on the string above the stated fret. As you pick the string, remove your you finger and you should get a bell like tome that sounds a different pitch to the open string. Let each string ring out after each harmonic is played over the subsequent notes until another note is played on that string. In bar 19 and 23 there is a single fretted note so be prepared to switch technique on a dime. This will create a rich harp like feel to the piece that will give a really christmassy feel.The only big change in the coda is a gentle ritardando and an arppegiated harmonic across three strings. Gently place a finger across the three strings and role them off the as they are picked. Final ThoughtsI am a really big fan of tight arrangements and love constructing arrangements for my students. One of my greatest challenges is creating performance pieces for guitarists that don't sing. This is especially ponient during the holidays when everyone wants to hear all the classics. This piece is extremely musical and the harmonics are a real crowd pleaser.
