It is based on a sonnet by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) entitled I loved you first: but afterwards your love from her Monna Innominata, a series of 14 sonnets. I loved you first: but afterwards your love is one of Rossetti’s love poems; it simply yet profoundly expresses the existence of love as being made possible only through the complete melding of two people as one entity.The Love Which Makes Us One is best suited for advanced intermediate to professional level choirs. Competitive high school and college choirs should be able to manage it. The piece involves continuous two-against-three rhythms with the choir vs. piano. In addition, there is one extended a capella section that requires the choir to stay on pitch for the piano re-entry. Tenors need to be able to sing the G above middle C, and basses need to be able to sing the F below C3.Duration: 5:40World premiere performance by Freudig Singers of Western New York on March 7, 2020, Buffalo, NY.(Please note that the mp3 file associated with this listing is a midi rendering only. As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players. I arranged this for the quartet’s ‘snowy season’ of events, and for my daughter who sings. You can hear our recording of the whole song on my channel if you type in Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, ‘All I want for Christmas’ into Youtube. I would say that the syncopation probably calls for advanced string players as it is vital to keep the timing steady if the singer is to survive such a big sing with so few opportunities to breathe! However, there must be many vocalists who would love to try this as a party piece for a christmas concert. I am thinking of sixth formers or performing arts college students, or professional players for christmas event and weddings. If you have a good local singer, it could work with a string orchestra too. The triplets need to be very light and passed effortlessly between the players so that the texture is thin but rhythmically vibrant. Cellists can simplify bar 74 by playing just the notes on each beat as crotchets. The opening will need a lot of rehearsal as the quartet /orchestra need to know what the singer will do. I have put some of the lyrics into the score to help with this. I hope you enjoy performing this as much as we did! I am transcribing it for quartet without a vocalist too which could easily then be tackled by string players of Grade 5 ABRSM. Watch this space!
