My Prelude on the hymn tune Webb (Stand Up, Stand Up, for Jesus) was conceived for a three-manual organ. The tune is stated four times, twice in the right hand, once in the left hand, and once in the pedals. Each statement is in a different key, the first in G major, then B major, then D major, and finally E major. In the first, second and fourth statements reiterated chords in triplet rhythm provide the accompaniment, while in the third statement the accompaniment is provided by parallel fourths in duplet rhythm. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

William Gilbert Jones Ovens (1870-1945) conducted seaside missions in Northern Ireland for over 30 years. Following World War I, Owens saw a wounded veteran limping past him on the street and he thought He was wounded for me. Gladys Dobson Roberts, a missionary in India, wrote 4 additional verses (Dying for me, Risen for me, Living for me, Coming for me.) Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856 -1932) taught himself to play the family’s reed organ, growing up on a farm in Iowa. He was teaching singing school by age 16. He served as music director in Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco for 2 years beginning in 1890. In 1912 he began working with Homer Rodeheaver’s publishing company. He edited 43 song books, 7 men’s chorus books, 19 anthem collections and 23 cantatas. He wrote the lyrics for 63 hymns and the tunes for 218 hymns. I used to like to tease the pastor of the Nazarene Church we were attending at that time whenever he chose this song. Responding to the lyrics I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, I would remind him that Jesus wasn’t a Nazarene; He is THE Nazarene.Suitable for preludes, offertories, concerts, personal meditation. Ropp (A0.971687). I Stand the Watch Before the Dawn is a dramatic piece for SATB choir and tenor and soprano soloists, for the season of Advent. The piece begins with the solo tenor and piano, in which the tenor plays the part of the night watchman and expresses longing for the light, and anguish at the condition of the people in the darkness. The tenor solo ends with the words Why have you forsaken us? The choir then enters a cappella (in performance, the choir can be doubled on organ using soft strings if necessary--it's difficult for the choir to get its starting pitches), and a soaring solo soprano provides the answer: the Light has come, but more than that, You were never alone; you are never alone; you will never be alone. One staging idea for this piece is to have the solo tenor up front, and the choir and soprano unseen in the rear, especially if there is a rear balcony that will hold the choir. However it is staged, this piece provides worshipers with a powerful and unforgettable reassurance that they do not face their darkest hours alone. (Please note that the MP3 file has some oddities in the dynamics; the sudden changes are artifices of how the MP3 is rendered from Finale and should not be interpreted literally.).

ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSWhen I was a young child and I would ask my mother for something she would often, in the midst of all her busy jobs, say to me, “Oh, give me a minuet!â€, meaning jokingly a minute, of course, before she could tend to my wishes.  This meant that I grew up believing that a minuet and a minute meant the same thing and could be equally interchanged. You can then imagine my amazement and amusement at around 13/14 years of age when I discovered through my music studies that a minuet was in fact a type of musical form and dance! Therefore, it went without saying that at some point in my music writing life I just HAD to write my Mum a minuet! So, here is the minuet she so often unwittingly asked me for throughout our lives! She attended the premiere of the Flute, violin and piano arrangement in Bolton, UK, and was highly amused (and not a little chuffed) by the story behind the piece!Naturally, the piece is dedicated to my mother, Margaret (Pearl) Denny, and was finally written in June 2015 for Gary Woolf and the Banda Di Musica in Germany.Its duration is about 7/8 minutes long and it is intended for junior strings. Violins 1 and 2 are of moderate difficulty, while the Violin 3/violas, cellos/basses are simpler.There is a violin solo throughout (moderate difficulty), to be played by the Leader, but is not a concerto-style solo, but rather one that weaves in and out of the texture throughout the piece.The piece is in a minuet and Trio style and is light, tuneful and fun. There are 3 arrangements available:No.1 – School Arrangement: Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No.2 – Standard Arrangement: Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos, Double bassesNo.3 – Violin, flute and piano.  This arrangement is of a more advanced standard than the string orchestra arrangements and would suit players of approximately grade 7 upwards.
