Though he lived much of his life in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, Hughes was born in Missouri and raised in Kansas, Illinois, and Ohio. At age seventeen, he traveled to Mexico to live with his estranged father. As he crossed the Mississippi River, he was inspired to write The Negro Speaks of Rivers, which begins “I’ve known rivers….,†and is the text for the first movement, “My Soul Has Grown Deep.†It reflects upon rivers of historic and geographical importance—the Euphrates, Congo, Nile, and Mississippi. As the rivers have endured over time, so has the human soul. The waters—the blood—runs deep.In contrast to the universal message of the first song, “Troubled Water,†which uses the poetry of the same title, is contemporary and personal. Water becomes an image of the unsettled and uncertain nature of love. The journey of love is a journey of troubled water. There is no resolution.Undaunted by the elusive nature of love, the poet, heard via the chorus, turns flippant, displaying a persevering and humorous outlook in “Jump Right In!†(to the river) from Hughes’ poem Life is Fine. Romantic misadventures will not conquer the spirit. “I could’ve died for love, but for livin’ I was born.â€â€œIn time of silver rain,†once more using the poem of the same title, is a song of healing. With the regeneration of spring, the poet marvels at the wonder of life.Though intended to be performed as the complete multi-movement work I’ve Known Rivers, each song may be performed separately. Joseph Pugh #6479293. Published by Joseph Pugh (A0.855228). After attending college in Battle Creek, Michigan, Harris produced his first hymnal in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois at the invitation of Peter Bilhorn, and in 1932, to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He composed and compiled a number of works, and was well known locally as he walked around with a canvas bag full of handbooks for sale. His works include: Light and Life Songs, with William Olmstead & William Kirkpatrick. This is an arrangement by, Joseph Pugh, of Harris' well know Hymn, for Brass Quintet and features the piccolo trumpet.

Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. These twelve short pieces for piano were inspired by the sounds from my childhood, namely the musical themes from games played on eight-bit consoles like Nintendo. Whether or not you share such memories, I’m confident we can find common ground here; each piece attempts to see and hear the world from a child’s imaginative, wonder-filled perspective. Dr. Ben Dockery is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Tennessee Wesleyan University. There he teaches courses related to music theory, ear training, piano, and orchestration and arranging. After receiving degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and DePaul University, he completed his D.M.A. from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 2012. Dr. Dockery began teaching piano in 1999 and has taught and performed music ever since. Dr. Dockery has composed and arranged for piano, small jazz ensemble, and jazz big band. He has performed on numerous recordings with noted musicians such as Phil Woods, the DePaul Big Band, the late Zim Ngquwana, the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, and others. In addition to writing the book Conceptualizing the Jazz Piano Trio, Dr. Dockery has written for Chicago Jazz Magazine and continues to publish articles, interviews, compositions, and more at his website www.bendockery.com. He maintains an active performance career playing in regional venues and serves as organist for Inskip Baptist Church.

Above the river I will standâ€. High above the banks of the Rock River in Oregon, Illinois, stands an impressive 48-foot-tall statue created by famed artist Lorado Taft. The official name is The Eternal Indian, but it is known to local folk as Black Hawk. It stands “proud and strong†as a tribute to the Native Tribes who flourished in the area before settlers occupied the region. This original song by John Meola Lindhorst pays homage to those tribes. The story is told through three poignant verses, written from the statue’s perspective. The opening lines: “I have stood for many years, as a constant reminder, of the strength of my tribe. New Resources is an exploration of the compositional techniques commonly found in African drumming. A simple four-bar pattern is subjected to a number of processes and permutations, creating increasingly complex polyrhythms and a sense of large-scale acceleration. These passages, which are played on wood instruments, are interrupted by shorter sections that involve skin and metal timbres. Composed in 1999, New Resources is one of the few pieces from my undergraduate that still sees the light of day. In 2004, my collaborative partner Lisa Rie used the music to accompany a dance piece entitled Delta Eco, which celebrates the rich flora and fauna of California’s San Joaquin River Delta. New Resources has had performances throughout California and Arizona, and in 2005 it was played by William Moersch and the University of Illinois Percussion Ensemble. ~A.A.

I composed Temporary Dwelling at a time when I was moving from Minnesota to Illinois. At the same time, my parents were moving from Saskatchewan (CA) to Arkansas. Everything was in flux. This piece is programmatic and tries to express the energy of life in motion with a brief stopover between dwellings. An ostinato in the left hand helps with continuity, while the melodic line seems to defy the implied tonality. The piece doesn't really end, with the opening ostinato fading out, like a 'radio fade.

The journey across the Wild West was full of hardship, peril, and loss This song battles the very real struggles with levity and humor. It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload.
