In Memoriam, A.H.H., Op. 80 by Ryan LeGrand.This song cycle, written for Baritone and Piano, is a setting of portions of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poetry cycle In Memoriam, A.H.H. which was written over a period of about 20 years. Tennyson's daughter's fiance was killed and Tennyson wrote the cycle of about 150 poems over 20 years as a grieving process. In this cycle, I've chosen parts of 5 poems that go through the stages of grief, including the famous Tis' better to have loved and lost than never to have lost at all. It goes from strict atonal to tonal and almost neoclassical idiom, from inner intense expression to parody and grotesque humour. Elements so characteristic in the musical language of the honored composer.The 5 parts are: 1. Introduction: Strange Visitors (Lento misterioso), 2. Scherzo I: Interrupted cha-cha : Faith's Dance (Andantino scherzando), 3.Intermezzo: Et expecto...(Larghetto semplice), 4. Scherzo II: Devil's Dance (Allegro giocoso), 5. Finale: Flames (Feroce) There is also a programmatic scenario behind the five mouvements of the work: Strange visitors appear threatening or cheating. And suddenly Faith start to dance an interrupted cha –cha. Expectation stands in the center of the work and in the soul of our hero. Devil’s dance leads to the final test. Flames. Flames of purification or flames of hell?It has been performed by the ensemble ALEA III under Theodor Antoniou at Tsai Performance Centre, Boston University in 2007. Parts of the work have been performed by Athens Bridge Quartet at Faculty Lounge, Deree College under the project Composing the String Quartet of Deree Arts Festival in 2013.Athens Bridge Quartet recorded it ion CD (MOTIVO BQ1070) among Greek Composers Works in 2017.

Hootenanny at the Gates of HeavenSonata in memoriam Daniel Pinkham (2007) for flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist FenwickSmith. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

The fascinating sound of ancient Greek creates a dialectic relationship with the modern international english language. All happens wihin a very interesting proposal for an avantgarde sacred music fitted for liturgical uses too. A considerable number of singers and of strings is required in order to create an adequate sound space and colour. Particular care is required by the intonation and the creation and substain of the right tone (which are perhaps the biggest challenge by the piece) but the entire music created by the phonemata and the training about it could be very funny and very precious and helpful for an interesting growth of a very fine Choir. The piece won the International Composition Competition Anima Mundi organized by the Opera Primaziale di Pisa in 2009.Stefano Maria TorchioItalian Violinist, Composer and Conductor, spent his education between Italy and the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, where he studied Orchestral Conducting with U. Lajovic and J. Wildner and Choir Conducting with E. Ortner and T. Lang. Further studies made Torchio in Violin, Composition and Organ at the Music Conservatory of Padua (his home town).He won prizes by international composition competitions like the Anima Mundi of the Opera Primaziale di Pisa, the A. Casella of the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, In memoriam... Johannes XXIII of Comune di Sotto il Monte, the MiniMusicDrama of Ovada and the Composition Prize of the Music Conservatory of Padua. He also participated by seminaries and masterclasses in Composition and Conducting with important Maestri like Z. Metha, F. Luisi, B. de Billy, S. Young, G. Andretta, A. Corghi, I. Fedele, C. Ambrosini, M. Lichtfuß and R. Vaglini by important Academies and Institution like the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, the R. Romanini Foundation in Brescia and the Accademia L. Perosi in Biella. M. Torchio: En Archè en o Logos (2007)A deep and powerful reflection on the first lines of John's Gospel and the mistery of the Creation and of the beginning. The fascinating sound of ancient Greek creates a dialectic relationship with the modern international english language. All happens wihin a very interesting proposal for an avantgarde sacred music fitted for liturgical uses too. A considerable number of singers and of strings is required in order to create an adequate sound space and colour. Particular care is required by the intonation and the creation and substain of the right tone (which are perhaps the biggest challenge by the piece) but the entire music created by the phonemata and the training about it could be very funny and very precious and helpful for an interesting growth of a very fine Choir. The piece won the International Composition Competition Anima Mundi organized by the Opera Primaziale di Pisa in 2009.Stefano Maria TorchioItalian Violinist, Composer and Conductor, spent his education between Italy and the University of Music and Performing Art in Vienna, where he studied Orchestral Conducting with U. Lajovic and J. Wildner and Choir Conducting with E. Ortner and T. Lang. Further studies made Torchio in Violin, Composition and Organ at the Music Conservatory of Padua (his home town).He won prizes by international composition competitions like the Anima Mundi of the Opera Primaziale di Pisa, the A. Casella of the Accademia Chigiana of Siena, In memoriam... Johannes XXIII of Comune di Sotto il Monte, the MiniMusicDrama of Ovada and the Composition Prize of the Music Conservatory of Padua. He also participated by seminaries and masterclasses in Composition and Conducting with important Maestri like Z. Metha, F. Luisi, B. de Billy, S. Young, G. Andretta, A. Corghi, I. Fedele, C. Ambrosini, M. Lichtfuß and R. Vaglini by important Academies and Institution like the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, the R. Romanini Foundation in Brescia and the Accademia L. Perosi in Biella.
