This short collection of 12 delightful and inventive miniatures for piano is intended for any Christmas event in schools and churches. They could be used as musical interludes in the narration of the Biblical nativity story or would be suitable for any end-of-semester events. All the pieces are short and with the exception of the final one, each fits on to a single page. They are written with the intermediate pianist in mind although there is quite wide range of difficulty level between the pieces. They can be performed in any order you wish, or even with different pianists taking part. The titles include: Desert Horizon, Camel Train, To the Evening Star, Pilgrims? Song, Song of the Two Shepherds, The Call to the Stable, Song of the Eastern Kings, Mary?s Lullaby to the Child, Ballad of Mary and Joseph, Dance of the Nativity, Hymn to the Holy Child, The Bells Ring Out. Here are three refreshing new modern arrangements of three popular traditional carols “like you ain’t never heard them before”. Intended for the intermediate oboe player and a reasonably competent pianist, they are sure to brighten up your Christmas events whether at home, school, church or recital hall. The pieces could be used during a Christmas service or as stand-alone pieces at an end-of-term presentation. The audio sample includes recordings of all three pieces.<br> <br> The King Rides Out (based on “Good King Wenceslas”) starts conventionally enough but turns into a country-style song and then there’s a three-part Bach-like contrapuntal section, concluding with a wistful coda. Waltz with Holly – or Possibly Ivy (based of course on “The Holly and the Ivy”) turns into a dreamy waltz with long extended phrases and a good vehicle to show the oboe player’s tone quality. The Merry Gentleman go Latin is a lively rumba version of “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen”.<br> <br> Colin Kirkpatrick studied composition, cello and piano at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music and after graduation followed a career in music education. He was a High School Music Director in London for about fifteen years and later became a Music Education Adviser for local government, with the added responsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service.<br> <br> He has been published by Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. Here’s a great way to explore some of the most popular European dance music of the early seventeenth century. This book contains easy piano arrangements of several dances from dance collection entitled Terpsichore published by Michael Praetorius in 1612. At the time he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany and the publication consisted of over three hundred dances in four, five and six parts. The name is pronounced “terp-SI-cory” and rhymes with the word “hickory”. Although the dances were probably conceived for string ensemble Praetorius was well aware that in practice, they would be played by any instruments that happened to be available. The five dances in this set actually include eight different numbers. These arrangements are based on the original 1612 publication, which did not include dynamics, phrasing or articulations. Any shown in these arrangements are the suggestion of the arranger. The keyboard parts have been fully fingered though fingering is omitted from repeated sections to encourage the player to memorize them. If the music is being played on a digital piano, the harpsichord sound (if available) might sound more authentic. The music is printed in fairly large easy-to-read notation and this collection would be ideal for the elementary keyboard player. It probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years. <br> <br> Sailors heading down the Mississippi picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty, which they sang while hauling in the anchor. Songs and Dances of Atlantis for Piano Duet (Book 1)<br> Twenty elementary to intermediate piano duets - four hands on one piano.<br> <br> The legend of Atlantis is one of the oldest and most enduring mysteries which remain in popular culture to this day. It has captivated the imaginations of people for centuries. Songs and Dances of Atlantis (Book 1) is a collection of ten easy to moderate piano duets which celebrate this famous legend.<br> These duets would be ideal for any piano recital event especially in schools or colleges. They could be useful in the piano lesson for both sight-reading exercises and ensemble practice. Of course, ensemble playing is an essential element of musical development, though most piano students rarely get the opportunity to make music with others. Ensemble playing encourages the performers to listen to each other as well as themselves and it encourages them to “keep together” rhythmically. Perhaps most importantly, it enables students to share musical decisions and work towards a common musical goal. Apart from that, playing duets can be great fun and can add an extra dimension to the piano lessons.<br> Most of the pieces contain short passages that offer opportunities for improvisation in the Primo part though rhythmic and harmonic guidelines are provided for those who require them. The Primo and Secondo parts are traditionally printed on separate sheets and the melodic material is shared between both parts. Book 2 contains a few easy pieces but pushes the boundaries a bit further and requires rather more advanced technical skills.<br> Book 1 contains the following pieces: (1) Song from the Northern Forest, (2) Ancient Song from Crane River, (3) Hymn to the Golden Sky, (4) Lullaby of the Sea Gypsies, (5) Song from Dragon Island, (6) Dance to the Temple Spirits, (7) Evening Song from the Cloud Lakes, (8) Round Dance from Ikrania (9) Slow Dance from the Eastern Hills and (10) Children’s Dance to the Sun.
