And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. If I Were a Bell is a song from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls, based on Damon Runyan stories from Broadway in the prohibition era. Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL (simple) SONG I WROTE FOR MY MOM AND SISTER To be clear, it is a prayer written in musical form. I guess that makes it a psalm. A few nights ago I was feeling the pain of so many people around the globe who are suffering due to the pandemic. I was inspired to sit down and write an simple song of comfort for them-for us. The very same evening I started writing the song, unbeknownst to me, my sister was being taken to the hospital where she collapsed of heart failure and was life-flighted to the nearest cardiovascular facility.They put her on life support (ECMO and ventilator) to let her heart and lungs rest. Two days later, due to complications with circulation in her leg she had to be rushed into emergency surgery to pull the catheter from the artery leading to her heart. This required taking her off of life support four days earlier than they had planned. We were informed she may not make it. Thanks to thousands of people praying for her, and her own indomitable spirit, she pulled through-but not without more complications.A fever kicked in and lack of circulation in her other leg caused even more concern. Her heart and body were suffering greatly. As we prayed (and thousands of you from around the world prayed with us) I kept massaging and nuancing the exact melody line I wanted, at the same time interweaving various lyrics to intuit what felt right. I wanted this to be a song anyone could sing for their beloved family member or friend who was struggling. Every note, every syllable had to land just right-as if it was meant to be.Through all this my mother was going through her own bit of personal anguish. We were basically waiting for my sister to die. Due to COVID regulations nobody, not even family, could visit her in ICU. My mother bought a plane ticket... just in case. We hoped beyond hope that, If she died, she would not die alone. I wanted to finish this song by Mother's Day to share with my mother and my dear struggling sister who is also a mother of 5. I finished it and sang it through tears on Mother's Day. I have many friends show speak Spanish who are going through very difficult times due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine. The second time through is a carefully crafted Spanish translation. I hope to hear people singing this far and wide with, to and for each other.

This was done in order to allow the singer to ask questions to a loved one who seems to fail in the return of the love offered by the singer. Yes, it is a song of unrequited love but with a double meaning. It can be understood as a lover trying to encourage the loved one to believe not only in oneself but also to trust in the love the lover has offered. In like manner, it may also be understood as Our Blessed Lord Jesus asking the loved one to trust in Him for true meaning in life. If life is seen as a card game then only God should be your dealer. I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Thanks, John. If I Were a Rich Man is a show tune from the 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof.  A Critical and Musical Survey explained that the song contains a greater number of Jewish commonplaces than any other number in the score, and added the song does twofold: it offers such a strong dose of idiom early in the show [which] is good for the overall unity, and the important dramatic function of introducing the central character of Tevye through song.  A repeated phrase throughout the song, all day long I'd bidi-bidi-bum, is often misunderstood to refer to Tevye's desire not to have to work.  However, in an interview with Terry Gross, Sheldon Harnick said he basically made up syllables that he thought would give the effect of Chassidic chanting.
