In this arrangement for violin and piano the piano provides a gentle accompaniment to the violin, and the violin has some phrasing added as a guide to encouraging a legato 'cantabile' performance. Ideal repertoire for High School students working at home, the performance duration is two and a half minutes and the full score has individual parts attached. Two people are playing a spirited games of marbles. The energetic music (Vivace) goes back and forth between the two players. Drama builds. Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred. This piece is fun to play and very showy for concert.84 bars; 2 minutes; 3 page score; 2 page partTemporary recording of piano reduction of score.

His son had already taken several violin lessons and now wanted to try to play the viola in order to join a youth orchestra. As a consequence, 'Impromptu' is easy to play, and its Romantic harmonies in the equally easy piano accompaniment make the piece a well sounding duo that can even be performed by beginners. The Austrian composer and musicologist Hans Gál (1890-1987) composed operas, orchestral works, concertos, vocal music and, especially in the last decades of his life, numerous chamber music works. In addition, he published books (Brahms, Schubert, Verdi) and essays. When Gál was forced to leave Germany in 1933, he first moved to Vienna and finally settled in Edinburgh where he composed and taught at the university until his death.
