A seasonal smash hit that has a place in all our hearts, this arrangement of Howard Blake's 'Walking in the Air' (from the classic animated film 'The Snowman' [1982]) is written for unaccompanied SATB choir and is intended for choirs and carolling groups of an experience level somewhere between beginner and intermediate. The parts are written in a way that is straightforward to learn & sing whilst remaining really fun & interesting. It is the undisputed favourite of carolling group 'All Change Please', whose 2019 performance of the arrangement you can hear in the audio sample and YouTube video. It is impossible to sing Katrina and the Waves' classic without feeling cheerful and optimistic. This short arrangement was written to be learned in an afternoon at a workshop mixing experienced and novice singers, and so keeps the parts relatively simple and the ranges not too extended. It gains interest through textural changes and handing the melody around between different parts.
The arrangement is notated in the traditional clefs for women's barbershop: treble and bass alta (i.e. sung an octave higher than written).

The left hand accompaniment is more developed than most of Mr. Mahan's selections. C and F levers required. Montecito Morning is in the key of D, 2 pages, with lovely embellished 7th harmonies. Walking Down Butterfly Lane is very easy to play, but the harmonies make up for the simplicity. Treasure of San Ysidro has a mysterious sound to it. Key of A minor with a variety of rhythmic changes throughout, an interesting composition to play. Canyon has a breezy feel to it, key of C, with an easy left hand. Lotusland as another mysterious sounding composition in the key of B minor, switching back and forth from ¾ to 6/8. Montecito Moon in ¾, key of C has a busy left hand, full rolled chords in the right hand along with moving eighth notes. A View from Eucalyptus Hill has a lovely melody with a variety of left hand changes throughout. Moves from ¾ to 4/4 and back to ¾. Southwest Sunrise Trumpet Solo Eddie Lewis and Alex Lewis MTR P111 4137 Southwest Sunrise is a trumpet solo for beginner trumpet students that has a more complicated piano part. I often get requests for music for students of different skill levels. And in fact, that’s what of my strengths as a writer, is that I can blend parts across skill levels that way. In this case, Alex and I were striving for something that would be interesting for the pianist, but not overly challenging for the beginner trumpet student. The Process The inspiration for this piece came to me on a morning walk in Chandler, Arizona. Chandler is a suburb of Phoenix. I was walking east, into the rising sun. It was a very simple melody. It was a very simple blues melody that I immediately recognized as something that would work in our series for beginner trumpet students. This was during a time when my son, Alex, and I were already collaborating on some other projects. For this piece, I gave Alex the melody and gave him a general description of what I was hearing. Then I gave him his space to create what sounded good to him. The next stage was me editing some of his creativity. At this point we went back and forth on a few issues until we agreed on the final results. SKILL LEVEL The skill level for Southwest Sunrise is Trumpet Pioneer (we don’t have skill levels for piano parts yet on this website). Trumpet Pioner is the first of seven levels in our system. These are absolute beginners who have only been playing the trumpet for a few months. Our Trumpet Pioneer level limits the range to C in the staff. We also limit rhythms to nothing smaller than quarter-notes, and key signatures are limited to one flat or sharp. Practice Recommendations While it is obvious and I don’t normally list it as a point in this practice recommendations, but the rhythms are very different between the trumpet part and the trumpet part. So it is even MORE important to spend time listening to the composition long before you begin practicing it. As I said, this is a good habit for working on all performance pieces. There is research that proves that students learn their music best when they recognize their mistakes soonest. When you listen to the music repeatedly before you practice, it goes a long way towards helping you recognize your mistakes. This is one of the most important reasons for listening, but there are others that I won’t go into here. Assuming the pianist is far more advanced than the trumpeter, the pianist should assume a patient, educational role.

This wonderful Sonatina is in 3 movements for the intermediate flutist. It is a finalist for the 2022 New Voices for Young Flutists competition. Set in the band friendly Key of B-flat major, Movement 1 is a Classical Sonata Allegro Form with an accessible flute part and a piano part that makes it BIG!  It's called 'Clockworks' because of the type of clock sounds used, especially in the piano part. The range for the flutist is Low A to High D.   Movement 2 is called 'Time for Caring.' I wrote the melody I wanted to play. It's lovely and makes you want to develop an even more beautiful sound. It's range is Low F to High D with a fast scale going from Low F up to mid B-flat.  This is also in the Key of B-flat.  The 3rd Movement is also in the Key of B-flat. I called it 'Time to Grow.' It's rhythm is in 8/8, usually divided into 3+3+2, although there are a few measures where it is easier for the flutist to think of it in 2+2+2+2.  It has a lot of drive in the rhythm and I think has a Broadway kind of sound, as if people were moving and walking across a busy stage while singing. I'm uploading a recording of this which I hope you enjoy! The piano part is much more challenging. Each of these movements is accessible, musical, interesting and when paired with the accompaniment a full ensemble kind of sound.  Enjoy!

This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. The arrangement, which makes prominent use of sharp ninth chords during the head, is a great teaching tool for basses and altos in any vocal jazz ensemble!
