Published by Andrew Orgee (A0.1212509). This Bossa Nova for light orchestra is inspired by the jazz-Brazilian fusion music of the 1960s made popular by composers such as Edu Lobo and Sérgio Mendes. The piece has a lively character, and its many themes and rhythms which change throughout pay a colourful tribute to the Bossa Nova. The piece is a type of invocation to a Brazilian rain god hence the title Danca Da Chuva (Rain Dance), alluding to the current climate situation. It is scored for winds, saxophones, brass, strings, and a rhythm section with guitar, piano, drums, and doubles bass. It is intended for amatuer and semi-professional light orchestras with an intermediate playing ability.

Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II. Gustav Mahler’s “Veni Creator Spiritus†was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of “Faust†by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children’s choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as “Symphony of a Thousand.†Part I, “Veni Creator Spiritus,†expresses the whole range of human emotions: grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello’s arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler’s original work.
