Invocation The guitar introduces the evocative mood of the work, followed four measures later by the oboe, which with its characteristic sound, embraces the guitar into a conversation and at the same time into an invocation. The second theme, atmospheric, echoing reveals a waiting status. The work is full of fast arpeggios and technical difficulties for both instruments. Gradually increases in dramatic tension and complexity and concludes with the initial idea. The finale is simple, subtractive, allows a feeling of an unfulfilled expectation. Duos for guitar and Oboe are rare and always a challenging task for the composer. That was the primary reason of mine when I started working on this work, to accomplish a match that is unique and wonderful at the same time. Most of my music since that time explores the uniqueness of instruments and their interaction. Invocation was one of the first and its material used later by me in my First Guitar Concerto (Phygein Adynaton). Invocation was premiered at the TSAI Performance Center in Boston, MA and it was a prize winner at the Finalists of the 1994 ALEA Composition Competition

'Invocation and Dance' begins with an introductory summons call from the bassoon (with piano chords), outlining the irregular metre feature of the whole work. Then follows the main dance section, in ternary form. Its main A section material centres around C (which returns with variation towards the end), and consists of a jaunty 7/8 bassoon theme, accompanied by unsettled piano harmonies. The contrasting central B section, in the dominant key, continues to explore irregular metre with 'hiccups' in the rhythm, as piano 'oom cha' chords support a bassoon melody based mainly on fourths. The opening invocation call recurs in slight variation at the end to bring the work full circle. This piece was composed by Brad Rau for solo guitar. Rau has always been fascinated with dark, evil, sounding music, and this is his attempt to write some that are truly dark. This is also inspired when Rau has a kidney rupture that eventually causes him to have it removed. This was recorded on Brad's third album, In a Very Unusual Manner. The main theme is based on two minor chords a tritone apart. It then accelerates in tempo into an octatonic excitement with constant time signature changes that jar the listener. Then the main theme comes back, this time in Tremolo. It ends with the same solo theme it begins with. The piece is inspired by works of Erik Satie, Invocation and Dance by Joaquin Rodrigo, and the Usher Waltz by Nikita Koshkin.

Quartet for Piano and Strings (A Sea Liturgy) (2009) was jointly commissioned for the Moscow Studio for New Music and the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble (Sarah Darling, artistic director). It is dedicated to the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble on its 10th anniversary. The work is cast in a single movement and is conceived as a sea liturgy. It attempts to conjure up an imagined set of spiritual rituals (not connected to any specific religion)-a ceremony of transformation and renewal performed in the context of a sea landscape. Though not broken into movements, the formal design of the work could be seen as follows: Processional - (Ritornello) - Invocation - Offering - (Ritornello) - Baptism - Rebirth - Recessional As with so many of my works, much of the initial musical planning took place in the context of the oceanscapes of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Those particular sea landscape were foremost in my mind while writing. The listener may also discard the imagined liturgical apparatus and simply listen to the work as a series of seascapes. (For the purposes of narrative clarity, the above section descriptors will be used in the below narrative.) The opening Processional begins with focused, austere intensity: the instruments unfold from a single pitch (E) into a more rich harmonic landscape. A Ritornello of pulsating string harmonics leads into Invocation, a warmly lyrical discourse. The Offering is a faster, jubilant development of the Invocation, where the prayerful melodies of the Invocation are transformed into a gift for the sea. A return of the Ritornello leads to the Baptism. In this section, heterophonic melodies unfold out of the new substrate pitch (D). In the transforming crucible of the water, these lines becomes more and more extended harmonically. The Rebirth is a dancing development of the Baptism; the harmonic extensions are pushed from dissonance into chords of pure joy. Emerging out of the afterglow of the Rebirth is the Recessional, in which the music of the Processional is revisited, now transformed by the ritual to center on the pitch D. The Recessional fades away peacefully, yet fervently.

The work is written in five movements and is based on a series of poetic images.The first movement, Remembering the Sounding Bells..., uses bell-like sonorities and tonal fragments whichare developed between the four instruments of the quartet The second movement Interrupted Ricacares beginswith a compact, accelerating atonal motif which alternates with contrapuntal passages which evoke motet and ricacare forms.En Croisant le Diable Boîteux (Upon meeting the limping Devil) takes its inspiration from the novel by Lesage. This movement is a lively bi-tonal scherzo in classical ABA form which exploits off-the-string bowings and doublestops. The fourth movement, ...L'inflexion des voix chères qui se sont tues (the sounding of dear voices which have been silence) is a line from Paul Verlaine’s : Mon rêve familier (Poèmes saturniens/ melancholia VI 1866). A slowly unfolding dirge-like theme is passed through the four instruments in an expressive lament. The final movement, Appels et invocations, is inspired by a strophe in Charles Baudelaire’s le Serpent qui Danse in Les Fleurs du Mal which speaks of preparing for a voyage, real orimagined, which is expressed here in the angular, robust theme in unison which opens the work.

Based on the myth of Taliesin, the Ancient Scenes concert suite is made up of five piano solo arrangements extracted from the Legend complete ballet. These are the Invocation, Processional March, Fire Dance, Snake Dance (The Oracular Serpent) and Bacchanal. The music of the Invocation prepares for the reenactment of the myth of the Sun King, whose life and subsequent sacrifice is executed to placate the wrath of the Moon Goddess. According to legendary accounts, King Maelgwynhad determined to offer Taliesin as the sacrificial victim, and led him off in chains to the cadence of the Processional March to the dungeon at Dyganwy where along with Prince Elphin he was imprisoned. The King caused a great sacrificial funeral pyre to be built, stacked high with wood and stoked by burning embers taken from a fir tree, still smoldering from a winter’s storm lightning strike. The people of Gwynedd leapt in a furious sacrificial Fire Dance as Taliesin was brought enmeshed in a wicker cage to the edge of the pyre. A great snake appeared before the fire, coiling threateningly, and rearing up with a fearful hiss, spoke to Taliesin as the Snake Dance unfolds: Can you answer the riddle of the oracular serpent? As soon as Taliesin answered the correct mysterious formula in secret words only audible to the snake, the flames of the pyre roared back into life, and the serpent disappeared into fire to the sound of drums pounding an inexorable rhythm. King Maelgwyn was seized by his own soldiers and thrown without ceremony on the burning maelstrom, and led by the High Priest and the Council of Elders, Taliesin was proclaimed Sun King, who will reign for a period of seven years. All join in a great Bacchanal in celebration of the preservation of order in the universe.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1472849). “That We May Give Ourselves” is a short anthem based on a traditional collect — a prayer comprising an invocation, petition, and conclusion — that appears in various Anglican prayer books. The invocation, “Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed” acknowledges the eternity, creative power, and redeeming love of God. The petition, “Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another, and live this day in love to you” asks for the aid of the Holy Spirit in service to God and recalls Jesus's words in the Gospel of Matthew, 22:37-39: “And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
