Probably the world’s most well-known song in the habanera style arranged for SSA + piano.‘La Paloma’ was written in the early 1860s by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier, after a visit to Cuba.  Particularly popular in the Spanish speaking world, especially Mexico, ‘La Paloma’ has also been written and recorded in various other languages over the years.  (You may know the English version ‘No More’ sung by Elvis Presley in his film Blue Hawaii.)  I have read that along with ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles, it is one of the most recorded songs in the history of music, certainly the most recorded Spanish song.Iradier’s original Spanish lyrics are written in four verses from the point of view of a sailor leaving Havana and parting from his sweetheart, dreaming of their wedding day and life together, and asking her to cherish his spirit if it returns to her window as a dove.  This SSA version has English text which tells the story in two verses.The piano accompaniment is a simple habanera style arrangement which allows the SSA harmonies to shine through.

Frederick (A0.1472734). “La Palomais a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was written by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) around 1860 after a visit to Cuba. Iradier was to die in obscurity within few years, never to learn how popular his song would become.There are more than one thousand versions of this song, and together with Yesterday by The Beatles, is one of the most-recorded songs in the history of music; it is certainly the most-recorded Spanish songHere it is arranged as a clarinet duet. The melody was actually written by the Spanish musician Sebastián Iradier. Bizet mistakenly believed it to be a folk melody but was quick to credit the original author upon being informed of its origin.  Iradier had a gift for creating popular melodies as he also wrote the beautiful La Paloma. This arrangement employs a variety of timbres and the full range of the instruments. Guitars 3 & 4 are tuned to D and Guitar 1 has the option of playing up to a high A (fret 17), although this passage is equally effective played an octave lower (see note in score). I have provided a score with notes and TAB, a score with notes only (to facilitate directors' page turns) and all parts with notes and TAB or just notes.
