Carol Of The Bells

Album & Songbook review by: Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):

I have discovered a real wealth of great solo piano Christmas CDs this year! Isadars In Search For the Meaning of Christmas definitely falls into this category! Thoughtful, introspective, and a bit moody, Isadars arrangements are true to the carols (with some small melody changes in Bring a Torch and Carol of the Bells that bother me just a little) and still seem very personal. Bring a Torch, The Holly and the Ivy, and I Saw Three Ships are given a lighthearted, joyful treatment. Star of Wonder (We Three Kings), What Child Is This?, The Coventry Carol, and Sing We Now of Christmas are all minor, somber, reverent pieces, and all four are given loving arrangements that keep the dark, mysterious nature of the songs and reflect Isadars own sensibilities. Carol of the Bells and Isadar's take on Liz Storys arrangement of Greensleeves are energetic without losing all abandon. Silent Night and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear present us with a very cold, deep solitude - both feel like late night with moonlight reflecting off the snow. Both are moody, but very beautifully so. George Winstons December is one of my all-time favorite holiday albums, and I feel In Search For the Meaning of Christmas holds up exceptionally well next to it. This is an excellent collection of Christmas music, and I highly recommend it!

In Search For the Meaning of Christmas is the companion songbook to Isadars 1999 solo piano release by the same name. Meticulously transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing, the music is faithful to the recording in every way (except for the pianist - YOU!). The scores are clear, concise, and easy to read, and also include chord indications for improvisation or the use of instruments other than or in addition to the piano. Isadars arrangements cover a whole range of emotions, from very dark and somber to joyful and buoyant. All of the pieces from the CD are here, including Isadars homage to Liz Story and her beautiful version of Greensleeves. My personal favorites of the eleven songs in this book are the bright and cheerful Bring A Torch, What Child Is This?, Greensleeves, the darkly gorgeous The Coventry Carol, and Sing We Now of Christmas. Other titles that I really like are Children Go Where I Send Thee/The Holly and the Ivy, Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)," Carol of the Bells, and the effervescent Three Ships. Silent (Silent Night) and Midnight (It Came Upon a Midnight Clear) are a bit too dark for my own holiday tastes, but are interesting and very personal arrangements. This book will make a great addition to your holiday sheet music collection and is available from isadar.com and amazon.com.

Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more...

Also available as sheet music in physical songbooks, digital downloads, as well as software for Yamaha Disklavier player-pianos.

For more information, visit his website at: http://www.isadar.com

Composed by Public Domain, as performed and recorded by Isadar. Arranged by Isadar. Contemporary Classical, Neo- Classical, Christmas, Recital, New Age. Sheet Music Single. 8 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing
Contains:
"Greensleeves 2012"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collection, "O Christmas" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas," Liz Story's "The Gift," George Winston's "December," legacy Windham Hill solo piano artists, "A Winter's Solstice" compilations.

Note: Greensleeves 2012 is a revisited and evolved arrangement which like my earlier version, was inspired by and also pays homage to Liz Storys brilliant take on this timeless piece.

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording

Album review by: Michael Diamond (http://michaeldiamondmusic.com):

Fresh on the heels of his highly acclaimed chart-topping CD, Reconstructed, Isadar gifts us with a sparkling new album of holiday-themed instrumental music for solo piano, entitled O Christmas. Given the proximity to his recent release, one might assume that this one was quickly produced, but in reality O Christmas has been 7 years in the making. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, good things come to those who wait.
One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or off the beaten path as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas, yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.

The album begins with a track called Good Christian Men. Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally In Dulci Jubilo before it was translated into English in the 1800s. Isadars interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, Teddy Bears Picnic, which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with March Of The Toys to tie it in with the holidays a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is O Christmas Tree and is sure to have listeners humming along with its familiar refrain.

A track entitled Still is an innovative rendition of the classic Still, Still, Still which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it jazzed up shamelessly. No such liberties were taken on the classic O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, however. This song provides a showcase for Isadars accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled Song Of The Wise Men. It has been said that: Christmas is, above all, a childrens holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. This theme is well reflected in Isadars choice of O Come Little Children, based on a carol from the 1800s.

Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of Greensleeves 2012, which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays homage to Liz Storys brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of Masters In This Hall, which can best be described as, well masterful. The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Isadar characterizes it as an uninhibited melancholy arrangement. While I dont know if melancholy is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadars creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.

O Christmas is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadars elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadars distinctive piano style, Im sure that fans will want to include O Christmas in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.

Piano Solo - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Isadar. Contemporary Classical, Jazz, Recital, Americana, New Age. Sheet Music Single. 11 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing (BMI)
Contains:
"En Face Du Miroir (Facing The Mirror)"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano complete collection, "Red" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Liz Story, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording

Album & Songbook Review by: Kathy Parsons

Red is pianist/composer Isadars genre-defying tenth solo piano album and seventeenth independent release from the past twenty years. It is also the third installment in a trilogy of solo piano albums released in the past year - Reconstructed, a Will Ackerman-produced anthology of some of Isadars best piano pieces; O Christmas, Isadars second piano Christmas album; and now Red, a bittersweet love-themed album that took seven years to produce and that consists of the first new original solo piano material Isadar has released in more than ten years.

I have been reviewing and thoroughly enjoying Isadars releases since his second piano album, 1999s Active Imagination, which still stands as one of my favorite recordings. Even though I have been a big fan for many years, I was still blown away by Isadars live performance in my house concert series in July 2010. The man has magic fingers and an extraordinary piano touch that are perfectly suited to express his imaginative, distinctive, and emotionally powerful music.

Isadar is also a singer/songwriter and an electronic musician who creates the music videos for much of his music, dramatizing the stories that inspired the songs. I will always be partial to Isadars piano albums because his voice and vision are unique, incorporating jazz, new age, pop, and classical stylings into a musical language all his own.

Red opens with Broken Valentine, a free-flowing expression of heartbreak and the broad range of emotions that go with it, alternating between grief and confusion then shifting to perhaps anger and resignation - a great beginning. The title track conveys the freedom of an improvisation while weaving together a variety of upbeat themes. The Man Who Broke My Heart is energetic and in constant swirling motion - also very free and from deep within. The Stairwell is darker and much more mysterious, overflowing with Isadars intriguing accented rhythms and picturesque compositional style. My favorite track is the almost nine-minute Letting Go, a piece that intertwines a series of musical vignettes into a powerful, colorful musical collage. I love the way Isadar seamlessly goes from flowing and smooth to a bouncy jazz style to high drama without missing a beat. Great stuff! En Face Du Miroir (Facing the Mirror) is much lighter, with fingers dancing nimbly around the piano keyboard. The album closes with Blood ... Thicker Than Water, again a combination of changing themes that could well be a musical family portrait - different personalities working separately and as a unit, bound together by the unseen ties that keep families together through thick and thin.

Isadar has created another piano masterpiece that should be more widely heard than his previous releases due to the success of Reconstructed. I hope so, anyway! Red is available from isadar.com, Amazon, iTunes, and CD Baby. Very highly recommended!

Isadars Red: Solo Piano Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note transcription of all seven pieces from Isadars 2013 CD/download release by the same name. The music was transcribed by David Shenton (shentonmusic.com) with clear, concise notation that includes dynamics, pedaling and metronome settings.

Isadar is an amazing pianist with a style all his own, so this isnt a book that most pianists will be able to just sit down and play. It will take some work and attention to detail to get this music right, but it will be well worth the effort. Having the recording for handy reference would be a big help.

Rhythms are often complex and syncopated, but are usually repeated within each piece, so once you have them, the rest will follow fairly easily. There are only a few chords with a reach of more than an octave and none of the key signatures are terribly difficult. The layout and spacing of the music is excellent, and the paper stock is a bright white 9x12 format with a stapled binding.

If you enjoy listening to Isadars music, Im sure you will enjoy playing it, too! This songbook is available from isadar.com. Recommended!

The songs with their key signatures and the number of pages is listed below:

Broken Valentine - C minor (3 flats) - 4 pages
Red - A minor (0 sharps or flats) - 5 pages
The Man Who Broke My Heart - A minor - 6 pages
The Stairwell - F# minor (3 sharps) - 7 pages
Letting Go - F minor (4 flats) / C minor (3 flats) - 8 pages
En Face Du Miroir (Facing the Mirror) - Ab (4 flats) / F minor/ Bb minor (5 flats) / Db (5 flats) - 7 pages
Blood ... Piano Solo - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Isadar. Contemporary Classical, Neo- Classical, Activities and Games, Recital, New Age. Sheet Music Single. 9 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing (BMI)
Contains:
"Throwing The Dice"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collections, "Active Imagination / Reconstructed" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Liz Story's ("Things With Wings"), Philip Aaberg, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording

Note: A slightly different version of this composition is also heard on the Isadar album, "Reconstructed" (Produced by Will Ackerman)

Album & Songbook Review by: Kathy Parsons

I love this CD! It constantly amazes me how many outstanding composer/pianists there are out there - especially in relation to the few who are highly (commercially) successful within this broad genre. I would say that Active Imagination definitely belongs near the top of the heap. Isadars style is original, and his pianism is excellent. He lists his inspirations as Liz Story, Keith Jarrett, and Bill Evans, and I can hear traces of all three in his playing, but find his composing and playing styles to be uniquely his own.

The first three tracks are lively and upbeat (Active Imagination, Throwing the Dice, and Where the Wild Things Are) with an easy, jazzy, improvised feel. The meter changes are fascinating, and the bluesy beat on Wild Things is infectious.

From there, the mood seems to gradually darken and become more introspective. Waiting is a beautiful, flowing mood piece full of questions and a lovely melody line. Isadars cover of Liz Storys Wedding Rain is wonderful - this is a piece I often work on with my advanced students, and everything about Isadars interpretation of the piece seems right without being a carbon-copy of Lizs recording.

Feu Follet (the spook light) has a nice, easy flow with a strong sense of mystery; it also has an unusual rhythm that lightens the mood and adds a bounce. Uncertainty is cooler and more aloof, but gorgeous in its flowing introspection - that it ends with a major chord, feels like the soul-searching has had positive results. Love Chaconne is the closing track, and is the longest and most abstract piece on the CD. The left hand plays a repeated pattern while the right hand goes off in several different directions (one of the primary characteristics of a chaconne). Beautiful in its simplicity, this is the only track that seems to contain an element of pain and sorrow, but never dissolves into melodrama.

Active Imagination is excellent from start to finish and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes solo piano with substance and complexity, but is still accessible, melodic, and rhythmic. Bravo amundo!

Active Imagination Sheet Music Collection is the companion songbook to Isadars 1999 CD release, Active Imagination. The CD was one of my favorites for the year when I reviewed it for the print version of Wind and Wire magazine, so I was really looking forward to the sheet music! Transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of ShentonMusic.com (I proofed about half of the book, so I can attest to how accurate it is!), it is up to you to make the music sound as close to the CD as you want or to interpret the music and make your own statements with it.

One thing that really stands out about this collection is how much FUN it is to play. The rhythms are interesting and catchy, and the mood in several of the songs is playful and upbeat. This is especially true with the title song, Throwing the Dice, Where the Wild Things Are, and Feu Follet (the spook light). Waiting, Love Chaconne, and Uncertainty are slower, more introspective, and a bit moody, making this a sheet music collection that contains a variety of moods and styles. The only piece missing from the book is Liz Storys Wedding Rain, but the sheet music for that song is available in some of Ms. Storys own collections.

Early-advanced players should have no trouble with this music. The timing on some of the songs is a little bit tricky, but if you count it as you are learning it, it will fall into place.

If you havent heard the CD, check it out, too! This book is available here from SMP, isadar.com and amazon.com. Highly recommended!

Contains:
"Waiting"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collections, "Active Imagination / Reconstructed" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Liz Story, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording
