A piano solo arrangement of Yesterday Once More; made famous by The Carpenters. Yesterday Once More, written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, is a hit song by the Carpenters from their 1973 album Now & Then. Thematically the song concerns reminiscing about songs of a generation gone by. It segues into a long medley, consisting of eight covers of 1960s tunes incorporated into a faux oldies radio program. The work takes up the entire B-side of the album.The single version of the song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, kept from the number 1 spot by Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce. It was the duo's fifth number two hit and makes them the act with the second-most number two hits on the chart behind Madonna. The song also peaked at number 1 on the easy listening chart, becoming their eighth number 1 on that chart in four years.  It is the Carpenters' biggest-selling record worldwide and their best-selling single in the UK, peaking at number 2 Richard Carpenter stated, on a Japanese documentary, that it was his favorite of all the songs that he had written. The song was written for the musical film, Swing Time, where it was co-introduced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Astaire recorded a solo version of the song on July 28, 1936 for Brunswick records (catalog 7716) and it topped the charts of the day for five weeks. Billie Holiday recorded the song for Vocalion Records on September 29, 1936 and this too reached the charts of the day as did versions by Henry King and Guy Lombardo. In the film Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), the song is performed by Virginia O'Brien. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! It's a pretty song and not too hard to play!

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star.  The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where   Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see.  This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an ST duet with SATB choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir.  I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie Boss.

It is typical Foster style with a simple melody and harmony. It is treated in this arrangement as a flowing, lyrical piece that is suitable for any concert venue, festival, or contest. The melody is constant with the clarinet in different registers while the strings support the solo with various flowing accompaniments. The conductor's score has one set of instrumental parts and the clarinet solo. This is a beautiful rendition of a less familiar Foster song that is worthy of a fine classical clarinetist.
