Composed by J. S. Bach - C. Gounod. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Easter, Mother's Day, Wedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Funeral. Set of Parts. 6 pages. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications
This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, published in 1722. The title of the ?combined? piece was Mditation sur le Premier Prlude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod?s original arrangement transposed Bach?s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Lopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called "Schwencke measure" (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a ?harmonic weakness? (or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.
Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.

Baritone Horn TC/Euphonium,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.552852 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and individual part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3491315. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552852). Schwencke There are two popular versions of the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria to consider. Firstly, we have the version that exactly follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 27. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. This arrangement follows the original Bach prelude and so excludes the extra measure that Schwencke introduced in 1783. If you prefer the extra measure, please see Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Baritone Horn & Piano, S0.661783. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Â

String Trio - Level 3 - SKU: A0.552111 Composed by Bach-Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #6120335. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552111). SchwenckeThere are two popular versions of the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria to consider. This version features the Schwencke measure (ms 27). Ave MariaAve Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.Bach OverviewJohann Sebastian Bach was prolific. Bach HistoryBach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Bach StyleIt seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.Bach Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century.

Aaron Larget-Caplan #962501. Published by Aaron Larget-Caplan (A0.1377888). Prelude N. 1 in C Major, BWV 846 by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) arranged by Aaron Larget-Caplan Includes: 2 pages of music, 1 page of notes, 1 page of alternate fingering. It is recommended to print double-sided so no page turns are required while playing.About this Arrangement â?? The regular arpeggio gesture is straightforward on piano, but on guitar the performer may have to do a few adjustments to keep this gesture clear. The performer should play the arpeggios over multiple strings as much as possible allowing the notes to ring beyond their notated values. The music can be realized in various ways; hence the fingerings are suggestions and some measures can be played without a Barre. For an ethereal conclusion, I raised the octave of the last measures.Prelude N. 1 in C Major (no sharps or flats) is the first of 44 preludes and fugues written by Bach for keyboard. It follows a progression of arpeggiated chords touching multiple keys as it climaxes on an exquisite pedal point in the Dominant before returning to C-major. One of the most often arranged of Bachâ??s compositions, it was most famously the basis of Ave Maria by Charles Gunoud. This arrangement of Prelude No. 1 in C major, WTC Book I, BWV 846 is featured on the 2022 album â??Godâ??s Time: Music of J.S. Bach on Guitarâ?? by Aaron Larget-Caplan on Tiger Turn (888-09) and streams worldwide. Online lessons are also available. The arrangements of Aaron Larget-Caplan have been called â??very importantâ? and â??a must haveâ?, with Soundboard â??strongly advocatingâ? for them â??to be performed by young guitaristsâ? and include music by J.S. A collection of 3 Piano Studies inspired by J.S.Bach's works and techniques. Airborne uses Bach's Prelude in C Major BWV846 as its inspiration, but with the deliberate holding of the last note of each bar, and the placing of those notes, creates a most atmospheric piece. Prelude similarly has pop-out melody notes whilst Ripplebach plays one hand off against the other to create its atmosphere.

Published by Diamond S Music (A0.790122). 2-Part Invention No. 1 in C major by J.S. BACH, BWV 772 for Solo Piano. This is the original version of the beloved 15 2-Part Inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Inventions is a collection of short pieces Bach wrote for the musical education of his young pupils. These are among the finest examples of artistic gems ever written for this purpose, and probably because of this, they became very popular among Bach's pupils and others ever since they were written. The work comprises fifteen two-part, each named 'inventio', and fifteen three-part pieces, named 'sinfonia'. These two groups of pieces are arranged in an identical fashion-in ascending order by key-so that there is little doubt that Bach's intention was to bring them together as a single work. This is also confirmed by the way they are carefully written in his autograph fair copy penned in 1723. On every facing page of an open volume each piece demonstrates the contrapuntal technique, while, at the same time, explores a wide range of musical expressions using various styles and developing the motives in a logical fashion. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #899556. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1310493). This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in recitals or concert encores. This arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for the intermediate trumpet or cornet player. It is in concert C and the transposed trumpet range is from A below the treble staff to F sharp on the top line. The title of the “combined†piece was Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach. Gounod’s original arrangement transposed Bach’s keyboard part from C major into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French music publishing company Jacques-Léopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary. The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called Schwencke measure (m. 27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a “harmonic weakness†(or possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement. Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859 edition.

Baroque,Concert,Standards. 429 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3573587. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534500). J. S. Bach completed the 24 preludes and fugues that make up the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 in Cöthen, where much of his other important instrumentalchamber music was written. The twenty-four segments go through all of the major and minor keys, with an prelude which explores a single texture or figuration and a contrasting fugue in either 2, 3, 4 or 5 voices. In this arrangement, the different voices are either shared by the four instruments or, in the case of the five voices of the Fugue in Bb minor, implied through arpeggios in the alto and tenor voices. Care must be taken to make these implied chordssound through discretely sustaining these voices through resonance. The preludes are generally in relatively free improvisatory forms which explore different types of baroque devises, including italianate keyboard figuration, “arioso†ornamented melodies with ostinato accompaniments, and more abstract forms. Two of the preludes are especially notable: the stately harmonic progression of the First prelude in C major, one of Bach’s most well-known works, and the gigantic prelude and double fugue of the Eb Major prelude. The fugues represent an exploration of all styles, ranging from the Ricacare in the Fugue no. 4 in c# minor and the use of augmentation, canon and inversion in no. 8 in Eb minor.

This is the beautiful and most well-known of the preludes from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book I. The Prelude is not too terribly difficult to play and is as soothing to play as it is to listen to. The Fugue, is rather tricky and required much skill to get all four voices of the Fugue to function separately and as a unit. The prelude was also written down in the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. This Collection also includes a short essay about The Well-Tempered Clavier and a biography of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach is featured on the newest album release Fom Afar by acclaimed Icelandic pianist VÃkingur Ólafsson.Intermediate LevelFormat: Concert, 9 x 12 inches.5 pages.Program notesJohann Sebastian Bach's third sonata for solo violin, BWV 1005, is an incomparable masterwork of Baroque music. Written in 1720, this sonata continues Bach's mastery of the solo violin, balancing lyrical expressivity and technical complexity within a single work.  The opening Adagio movement is particularly beloved for its slow, passionate melody and depth of emotion. The movement's simple structure – two repeating harmonic progressions that contrast and combine – is especially beautiful in its unadorned melodic lines and sonorous tones. At the same time, the movement is filled with subtle variations and technical challenges, making it a dazzling display of Bach's technical brilliance.  Come and experience Bach's heartfelt music. You will be warmed by its passionate lyricism, enchanted by its technical mastery, and moved by its profound emotional depth.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Trio Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone - Level 4 - SKU: A0.534363 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque,Sacred,Standards. 179 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3387883. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534363). The Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 were composed about 1727 during Bach’s period in Leipzig. They were not composed for organ, but (according to Forkel, Bach’s first biographer whose information came from Bach’s son Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach) for the pedal harpsichord as means of improiving the pedal technique of his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. This instrument, which requires a great deal of precision in performance, contains a normal harpsichord with two manuals attached to a pedal board which activates another harpsichord which is lower to the ground. Many of the movements in these Italian sonatas were used in other settings, in Bach’s Cantatas and in other instrumental works.Bach always tuned his own keyboards and confided his tuning system to his student Johann Kimberger (1721-1788) who used this information to devise several tuning schemes to create a well-tempered system according to Bach’s ideas. The main principal that Bach gave Kimberger was that all thirds should be tuned slightly sharp (...alle grossen Terzen scharf). The saxophone is an ideal instrument to experiment with this sort of tuning, given the possibilities for adjustment in the embouchure. Nothing can replace a good set of ears in the process and use of electronic tuning devices should be avoided, unless they can be specifically programmed to reflect these sorts of non-standard tunings.Sonata no. 1 in Eb major, BWV 525 Sonata no. 2 in c minor , BWV 526 Sonata no. 3 in d minor, BWV 527 Sonata no. 4 in e minor, BWV 528 Sonata no. 5 in C major, BWV 529 Sonata no. 6 in G major, BWV 530

Published by Piacere Music Sheets (A0.1142466). Opus/Catalog Number: BWV 846Key/Tone: C MajorMovements/Sections: 1/2 (Prelude)Year/Date of Composition: 1722 in Das wohltemperierte Klavier I (No.1)Difficulty: Grade 7/12 (Intermediate)Obs.: This piece is probably the easiest composition in Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier. The Prelude appears also in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (1725). This notebook was filled with favorite selections of the members of the Bach family. There is also a slightly different version of this prelude, known as Prelude BWV 846A, in the Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Bach's Prelude BWV 846 consists of a simple progression of arpeggiated chords. It is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous compositions for the keyboard. Some sources show a trill of the last E of measure 34. If playing this trill, be sure to start it on the upper auxiliary note. This piece served as the inspiration for Gounod's Ave Maria.

Piano Quintet,String Ensemble Cello,Piano,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1132584 Composed by Charles Gounod, Johan Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). Baroque,Classical,Romantic Period,Sacred,Wedding. Score and parts. 18 pages. Joel Jacklich #732783. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.1132584). Charles Gounod's Ave Maria on the First Prelude of J. S. Bach is here arranged for voice, string quartet, and harpsichord by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). The obligatory harpsichord plays Bach's original Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier (transposed to F major) while the strings provide a harmonization to Gounod's melody. Violin I doubles the vocal part, so the piece can be performed as just an instrumental work.
