Der Leiermann (The Organ Grinder)This is the final song in Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle, and tells the story of a poet encountering a hurdy-gurdy player busking in the snow. An atmosphere of absolute bleakness and despair should be conjured up by any performance of this song, as the song’s main character completes his lonely ‘winter’s journey’ and deterioration of his mental state. The chromatic grace notes in the introduction are supposed to represent the sound of a hurdy-gurdy being warmed up, and the open A string played thereafter is meant to evoke the hurdy-gurdy’s drone strings; so ensure it is allowed to ring clearly whilst playing the main figure on the higher strings. The guitar part is relatively simple, but it needs to be played with absolute precision and dynamic control; the extensive use of the open position allows the guitar’s natural resonance to come through. This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

Des Baches Weigenlied (The Brook’s Lullaby)This is the final song in Die Schöne Mullerin, and is a lullaby for the travelling miller as he drowns himself in the brook that he followed throughout his journey. The girl he was serenading in Morgengruss did not return his feelings and eventually fell in love with a hunter instead, which is why the miller chooses to commit suicide at the end of the story. Written in strophic form, this song is very repetitive and should be performed in a hypnotic and stately manner, in order to conjure up the image of the gently flowing water rocking the protagonist into an eternal sleep. Des Baches Wiegenlied serves the same role as Der Leiermann, and while they both provide a very bleak conclusion to a song cycle, Des Baches Wiegenlied should create a mood of peaceful sadness and sorrow, rather than the dark desolation of its Winterreise counterpart; it is, after all, a lullaby.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

The text was written by poet, Johann Mayrohfer, Schubert’s fellow Austrian and close friend, and the lyrics describe the experience of sitting beside a lake at sunset. This guitar arrangement is written in E major in the interests of playability, but it can be performed in Schubert’s original key of F major by placing a capo on the first fret, or in the transposition for low voice by detuning the guitar a tone. Bars 4-11 should be played in a languid, lilting manner to represent the mind-set of the protagonist sitting beside the lake. This mood should be imbued with a hint of foreboding at bar 12, before returning to its former lilting tranquillity at bar 18. The opening phrase should combine these two moods, if possible. The vocal line is echoed in the guitar part in bars 19-24; these phrases should be performed with great delicacy so that they reflect the voice. The middle section, which begins at bar 29, should be played slightly faster than the previous sections, and with a brighter feel. It tells the story of a young miller who is on a journey in search of work after completing his apprenticeship. He follows a brook flowing through the countryside, which leads him to a mill where he can seek employment. However, upon meeting the daughter of the mill’s owner, he quickly falls in love with her. It is also known by the title: Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon, which creates the image of a colourful (or silver) night sky, in which the clouds and moon chase each other. The moon is an important symbol for Chinese people, who have a custom of worshipping it, dating back 3,000 years. Every year, the mid-autumn festival is held in China, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, which usually falls in September. During this festival, Chinese people celebrate with their families and admire the full moon whilst eating ‘moon cakes’. Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon is commonly performed during this festival and is also used by Chinese cake shops to advertise moon cakes, which increases its association with the mid-autumn festival and popularity amongst Chinese people. As well as being used to sell cakes, this piece is a staple of Chinese instrumental repertoire and has been arranged for a number of different instruments and ensembles, including solo piano, solo guzheng, guitar duo, harp duo, and wine glasses.This guitar arrangement is quite challenging; it includes a lot of intricate lines and arpeggios. Play the semiquaver sextuplets in the intro by dragging the thumb across the bottom three strings and quickly plucking each of the top three strings individually with the first three fingers. Most of this piece is played with standard classical fingerpicking technique, apart from the tapped arpeggios in bars 36 and 37.

One of the most famous pieces of Chinese classical music, this composition was originally written for solo Pipa and has been popular since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was previously known as Pipa of Xunyang, and Flute and Drum Music at Dusk, before it was given its current name in 1925. The name Moonlit Night on the Spring River is derived from a Tang Dynasty (618-907) poem by Zhang Ruoxu, which is very well regarded in China. The poem describes a scene of moonlight reflecting on the surface of a river in spring.Moonlit Night on Spring River is written in a multi-sectional form, with each section noticeably different to the others but with some recurring phrases which tie the whole composition together. Although it was originally composed for pipa, this guitar arrangement is based on a version for guzheng, which is a relative of the guqin, but with 21 strings and moveable bridges. The tuning for this arrangement is DGBEAD, from the lowest to highest string. As with Moon Over Guan Mountain, this arrangement is scored one tone higher, as if the third and fourth strings have been detuned by a semitone. I used a mixture pick, fingers, and hybrid picking to play this arrangement, with the fast, single note lines played with a pick and the loud chordal passages with hybrid picking. The quieter sections use fingers only.
