This series contains four issues. Each issue may be performed separately or may be performed as a whole. The Prologue, sold separately, may also be performed at the beginning of the series. Each issue represents an element, either an archetype, place, or an emotion, commonly found in comic book stories. As a whole, Strange Myths tells a particular story arc, one that is intentionally void of specific details, inviting the listener to imagine the particulars. Each series also contains its own sub-plot and emotional progression, suggesting the traditional symphonic form. Each issue has a duration of three to four minutes, limited to a small, but intensely expressive amount of thematic material. The challenge inherent in this limitation was to create enough contrast, yet not so much as to require more time to resolve it, therefore, each issue is self-contained.

Germs - Referencing the idea of small details making up larger formations, as expressed in the Whitman poem, I created a brief gesture made of cascading pitches. This gesture progresses throughout the work and varies texturally and harmonically. ​ ​II. Voices - This song features flourishes of arpeggios and flowing triplets signifying the joy expressed by the poem’s narrator. ​ ​III. When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer - The narrator of this poem was not swayed by the lecturer’s sterile and purely academic approach to astronomy, but instead found wonder in the stars by simply gazing upward. This song begins with alternating couplings of fourths and fifths in the highest register of the piano, depicting the uninspiring calculations of the lecturer. Bell-like gestures mark a return to a more awe-inspiring and sincere fascination of the stars. ​ ​IV. Thoughts - This final song conveys a musical sense of finality expressed in tits text. Utilizing quartal and quintal sonorities, this song takes on a patient and passive quality. As the narrator of the poem alludes to mortality, then finally states Death, the music becomes more chromatic, creating tense agitation. The passive quality returns quickly, however, and the work gently comes to a close.

Dashed a tone of light rose for solo flute ​ The title of this work is taken from a quote by the American painter John Sargent, in which he described the moment in painting Madame X that changed his view from one of dissatisfaction into one of utter joy and renewed inspiration. In dashed a tone of light rose, I sought to create the mixture of rawness and refinement found in Madame X, a once-controversial painting. The tension in this music represents not only the tarnished reputation of the artist, but also that of Madame Gautreau, the subject of the painting, whose status as a Parisian socialite was irrevocably destroyed. Throughout the work, both artist and subject are characterized by changes in tessitura. Though the artist's reputation was altered, ultimately it continued to remain intact through his lifetime, and it is he who gained our notoriety while the woman's misery has been largely forgotten.

Inspired by the Hindu story of Garuda, a deity who swallowed a tortoise and an elephant to gain strength, The Great Appetite of Garuda portrays great weight and power. A four-note motif enters clumsily tripping over itself. It gradually gains momentum as it is passed between different groups of instruments. A softer, muted section follows, slowly introducing a new theme that is marked by a rising fourth then falls a minor sixth. This rising figure and the four-note motif from the beginning of the work continue locked-in-combat to the end of this aggressive work.

Published by Jason Gary McChristian (A0.886136). In August 1960, U.S. Air Force pilot Joe Kittinger ascended in a high-altitude balloon 102,800 feet above the surface of the earth. As he leapt out of the gondola, Mr. Kittinger felt little sensation of falling due to the lack of air in the stratosphere. Depicting just moments before the 614 mph free-fall, the work opens with slowly forming clusters. Gaining intensity, these chords signify the sensation one must feel looking up to the blackness of space then peering down to the clouds below. Throughout the piece, a subtle trembling effect suggests the buffeting that can occur at high speeds. Kittinger's Descent is a fast-paced, turbulent ride honoring the man who broke records for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, and longest and fastest free-fall by a human without the aid of a machine.

Rhapsody on the Remnants of a Lost Folk-Song was begun during one of those ideal sunny weekend days in a Palo Alto coffee shop in August 2007. I envisioned a simple tune based on an ancient scale, accompanied by a lilting waltz figure. The tune I imagined (never heard in its complete form) was carried through a set of variations, sometimes stately, sometimes modest.

Inspired by the Dylan Thomas poem The hand that signed the paper, I attempted to compose music that was theatrical with a sense of the medieval. While the five kings in the Thomas poem represent the fingers on the hand of an oppressive ruler, for me, the five kings represent the five players of a brass quintet. I find [Minstrel's for Five Kings] brilliantly scored for brass...so many impressive moments...Bravo!

These men are unique in their ability to convey the wonders of science to the general public and have had a profound effect on my own appreciation of science. I have chosen fragments from each of these science ambassador’s writings, hoping to capture, in just a few words, the general manner of the given movement.
