The original version is for trombone and string orchestra. It was composed and performed within a 2 week period at a memorial concert given for Helen Manheim, a violist in Mr. Kempton's Island Chamber Symphony on Long Island, NY. Ms Manheim died rather suddenly and her passing left the composer with a deep feeling of regret at having taken her and so many other ICS musicians for granted. The piece consists of 3 lengthy phrases. The first epitomizes the grief at her passing. The 2nd presents her life and consists of 3 phrases, all starting the same but each striving higher. The final section is her legacy, what she leaves behind. Orchestral score and parts are available form Cherry Classics. The live performance features Mr. Kempton on the trombone.

The Concerto Grosso for Three Trombones with Piano accompaniment by Lindol Mitchell is a realization for Piano of the original orchestral score by Jeremy Niles Kempton. The original orchestral work was composed in 1961 as part of Mitchell’s Doctoral dissertation at the Eastman School of Music and was first performed in 1963 at a memorial concert for the composer after his untimely death. The solo performers were nine students of Emory Remington, including Ralph Sauer and Donald King. The work is is subtitled in stile Barocco and is in three movements. Movement I begins with an somber introductory Adagio followed by an Allegro in the style of a Bach Fugue led by the three soloists. Movement II is a slow and serious Larghetto in C minor. Movement III is a Presto in D minor in a Toccata style and is full of many mixed meter bars that add little little rhythmic surprises along the way. The 13-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The hand copied score and parts Concerto Grosso were rediscovered in the Sibley Library at the Eastman School of Music by Jeremy Kempton who then engraved and proofed them. He performed the work in 2011 with colleagues for the first time since its premier in 1963.

Let Us Rejoice (translation from Hebrew) is a traditional Jewish song that has become a staple at all Jewish celebrations. Since being introduced to the rest of the world in April 1959 by Harry Balafonte at Carnegie Hall it has grown in popularity to be a mega-hit, played everywhere, by everyone! The song's origins are from the Ukraine and words were added in 1918 by Israeli musicologist Abraham Idelsohn. Cascades in Brass for Brass Quartet by Jeremy Niles Kempton is a showpiece with lots of sparkle. If the dynamics are faithfully observed at times it will create a rippling effect like that of cascading waterfalls. This piece will add considerable flair in either a concert or church setting. It is intended for advanced performers but actually sounds harder than it is. If the trombonist uses the marked positions he will find it surprisingly easy to keep up with the valved instruments.

The use of Holly and Ivy have been traditional in English Christmas decorations since the fifteenth century. What Child Is This? was written as a hymn in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix who was inspired to write the carol after recovering from a near fatal illness.
