This tune has gone by the name of Rachel's Polka for many years as it was originally composed to be part of a set of lively polkas. However, as often happens with music, the beauty of Rachel's tune was only really appreciated once the tempo was slowed down. It has therefore been retitled to suit the new feel of the piece. The accompaniment can also be provided by acoustic guitar as illustrated by the MP3 recording. The Youtube link starts at 7 minutes.

The famous 18th century Scottish ballad has been given a 21st century makeover! Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. It is a carol to be sung during the Advent or Christmas period as it tells of the coming of Christ. This unaccompanied carol is best sung as an introit to a church service but can be equally placed anywhere in a concert of Christmas music. It is a carol best suited to an adult, mixed choir of modest ability but its harmonic interest might appeal to more intermediate/higher ability singers.

I have changed the time signature to common time (from its original 3/4) and introduced a shuffle rhythm in the accompaniment and vocals. Although written as SSA, the lower part could probably be sung by tenor voices. There is a descant for a few upper voices in the final verse.Although the song is considerably different to the original, being more of a Jazz/Blues number, it is still, in essence, a simple Christmas song to be enjoyed by choirs of any size or ability.

This arranged was made for my ladies choir Viva Vocals back in England but I would love this to be sung by an American ladies choir with more authentic accents!
