John Davison's Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (1990) is a dynamic, lyrical, brilliant and heartfelt work written for Trumpet in B-flat and Piano. It is in the traditional three-movement Fast-Slow-Fast format with the piano part playing an integral role.
Movement 1, Allegro non troppo is melodic and rhythmic with a bouncy syncopated style.
Movement 2, Andantino has lyrical and tender moments, and also a haunting muted section.
Movement 3, Allegro is in multi-meter, full of dance-like, rhythmic and syncopated sections.
The 16 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers and can be the major work on a recital.
The sample track is performed brilliantly by Terry Everson, Trumpet and Susan Nowicki, Piano.

Kaplan has fond memories of studying composition with John Davison at Haverford College, where music majors received a copy of his book, Piano Music I. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always occupying a prominent place on the piano. The Introduction and Dance is by turns introspective and witty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The arranger recalls Davison explaining that the Dance reflected his experience improvising for a Morris-dancing group. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Since selling cattle was quite profitable, a crew of cowboys drove a herd, particularly from Texas, to railheads where they would be loaded into railcars and shipped cross-country to get the best price at market. Cowboys watched the cattle 24 hours a day, herding them in the proper direction in the daytime and watching them at night to prevent stampedes and deter theft. Around the campfire, cowboys sang of life on the trail with all the challenges, hardships, and dangers encountered along the way.E. C.
