Henry Mancini wrote this unusual ‘jazz bassoon concerto’ in 1980 for Hollywood session musician Ray Pizzi (the so-called ‘godfather’ of modern jazz bassoon); he can be heard on the original ‘Star Wars’ (1977) soundtrack, also on ‘Predator 2’ (as the voice of the beast). This whirlwind piece takes us through the whole range of the instrument, starting with skittish jumping octaves, a free improvisation (book-ended by ‘shouts’ from the band), a very sultry slow section (featuring Mancini’s trademark chromatic harmony) a magnificent and dramatic final chorus, closing with an extended cadenza to further show off the instrument in this unusual disguise. This arrangement calls for a small beat quartet of keys, Fender bass and drums to accompany the solo bassoon; a suggested solo has been provided for the first section, but the final cadenza has been left blank for complete artistic creation. Lillian Hardin Armstrong was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader; she was the second wife of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” was originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental piece, with lyrics added by Don Raye in 1941. This popular song has been recorded more than 600 times, notable covers include those performed Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Desmond, Herbie Hancock, the Marsalis family and Earl Hines. When filing for divorce, Lillian sued Louis for custody of the song; Hardin won, though Armstrong continued to claim ownership for years after. This arrangement for concert band has been drawn from the jazz ensemble version by Rick Stitzel and features short solos for trumpet and alto sax. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

It stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as two divorced men – neurotic neat-freak Felix Unger and fun-loving slob Oscar Madison – who decide to live together. The film was successful with critics and grossed over $44.5 million, making it the third highest-grossing film of 1968 in the United States. The success of the film was the basis to produce a popular sitcom series based on it, starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman as Felix and Oscar. Almost three decades later, a sequel – The Odd Couple II, in which Lemmon and Matthau reprised their roles – was released, but it was a critical and commercial failure; however, the distinctively quirky theme tune, freshly arranged for concert band, is present in all versions to give your concert a chart familiar with all ages.

He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance, or The Love for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. The 'March' was used by CBS in the radio-drama series 'The FBI in Peace and War' from 1944 to 1958 and also by Prokofiev himself in his ballet, 'Cinderella'. This arrangement uses all the colour of today's symphonic band and would make an excellent programme item in a concert of opera music.

Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat is a song written by Frank Loesser and introduced in the Broadway musical, 'Guys and Dolls', which opened at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950. In the context of the show, gambler Nicely-Nicely Johnson invents a dream about being saved from hell in order to bring together the members of the prayer meeting. It was originally performed on stage by Stubby Kaye who later reprised his role as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 1953 London production, as well as the 1955 film version. In popular culture, the song was performed in the pilot episode of the show 'Glee' in 2009, and then redone in the season 3 finale, Goodbye as well as making appearances on various TV shows and films. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in March 1962. The song features a prominent riff from well-known harmonica player Delbert McClinton; while touring the UK in 1962 with the Beatles, McClinton gave John Lennon some harmonica tips; Lennon put the lessons to use right away on Love Me Do and later Please Please Me. Lennon included Hey! Baby in his jukebox and a version of the song was recorded by Ringo Starr in 1976. Hey! Baby! was used in the 1987 hit film 'Dirty Dancing' in the scene in which Johnny and Baby dance on top of a log; a dance remix in early 2000 by Austrian artist DJ Ötzi brought it back to prominence again, reaching number 1 in the UK, Irish and Australian charts. This arrangement for concert band has a harmonica part to tie-in with the original, but is beefed up with elements used from a marching band chart by Tom Wallace.

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1454878). 'Laura' is a 1944 American film noir produced and directed by Otto Preminger, starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews and Vincent Price. In 1999, 'Laura' was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and the American Film Institute named it one of the 10 best mystery films of all time. Once the principal photography had been completed, Preminger hired David Raksin to score the film. The director wanted to use Sophisticated Lady by Duke Ellington for the main theme, but Raksin objected. Alfred Newman, music director for Fox, convinced Preminger to give Raksin a weekend to compose an original tune. Furious, Preminger gave Raksin that weekend, but threatened him with dismissal in case he failed; ultimately, Preminger was so pleased with Raksin's score that he collaborated with him on four more films. The haunting theme can be heard throughout the film and this arrangement has been constructed from an exquisite choir and piano version by British composer Roderick Williams - vibraphone features quite extensively but cued as necessary if not available.

Theme from Harry's Game is a 1982 song by Clannad commissioned as the theme for 'Harry's Game', a Yorkshire Television miniseries adapted from a 1975 novel set in The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was released as a single in October 1982 and became a surprise hit, reaching number 5 in the UK Singles Chart the following month and number 2 in the Irish Singles Chart. The song is to date the only British hit single ever to have been sung entirely in Irish. The chorus Fol lol the doh fol the day, Fol the doh fol the day, is ancient Irish mouth-music, known as Portaireacht, which is common in traditional music. The song won an Ivor Novello award, and launched Clannad's global career. It has since appeared in several Hollywood movies, most notably 'Patriot Games', in which an IRA member, played by Patrick Bergin, is seen watching the music video for the song on his television. Available for concert bands worldwide for the first time, this haunting piece would provide a contrasting interlude in a programme of film and television music and features passages for cor anglais, which are cued for smaller ensembles.

John Ireland studied piano with Frederick Cliffe and composition with Charles Villers Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, where he himself taught between 1923 and 1939, his pupils including Benjamin Britten. He worked as organist and choirmaster at St Luke's Chelsea between 1904 and 1926, while developing his career as a composer. Ireland retired in 1953, settling in the hamlet of Rock in Sussex, where he lived in a converted windmill for the rest of his life. It was there he met the young pianist Alan Rowlands who would be Ireland's choice to record his complete piano music.He died of heart failure aged 82 at Rock Mill in Washington, Sussex, and is buried at St. Mary the Virgin in Shipley, near his home. His epitaph reads Many waters cannot quench love and One of God's noblest works lies here. His organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911), however, the 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn was written in 1958, and was his very last composition. Arranged for concert band, including parts for string bass and contrabass woodwind, as well as attractive moments for Cor Anglais.

It was released as a single in January 1969 by Fantasy Records and on the band's second studio album, Bayou Country. Written in 1923–24, it was premiered in Leeds on October 7, 1925, with the second performance three weeks later in London, although not received as well, due to various circumstances. 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' is sometimes performed separately from the symphony (as is another movement ('Scherzo')) and the final entry from the oboe reflects the enigmatic and often debated closing lines of the poem: Beauty is truth, truth beauty—that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. This new arrangement for symphonic wind band has been created to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Holst - composed ten years after his famous suite 'The Planets', this piece immediately brings to mind his inventive use of harmony and would make a centrepiece contribution in a cathedral-based concert to allow all the notes to resonate fully.

The Requiem, Op. 9, is a 1947 (revised 1961) setting of the Latin Requiem by Maurice Duruflé for a solo voice, mixed choir, and organ, or orchestra with organ. The thematic material is mostly taken from the Mass for the Dead in Gregorian chant and first published in 1948 by Durand in an organ version. Duruflé was among French composers commissioned in May 1941 by the Vichy regime to write extended works for a monetary award, such as 10,000 francs for a symphonic poem, 20,000 for a symphony, and 30,000 for an opera. Duruflé decided to compose a symphonic poem, which ended up being the 'Requiem' and was still working on it in 1944 when the regime collapsed - he received 30,000 francs, instead of the 10,000 of his commission, because of the complex nature of his work and inflation during that time. A portion of the 'Pie Jesu' was used by Michael Jackson to introduce the track 'Little Susie' on 'HIStory - Past, Present and Future - Book I'. This arrangement for brass band features the Flugelhorn, taking on the role of the solo mezzo-soprano.

She learned scat singing from her father and a love of jazz from his record collection, and she learned classical music from her mother. 'Christmas Lullaby' was recorded by Barbra Streisand in 2001 and is featured on her album 'Christmas Memories', it was later recorded by Callaway herself and has also been covered by Ronan Tynan. 'Bargain Hunt' is a British television programme in which two pairs of contestants are challenged to buy antiques from shops or a fair and then sell them in an auction for a profit. It has aired on BBC One since 13 March 2000. Whilst much of the music used in the show is from library stock, the distinctive theme, which has gone through a few different versions, remains, with a great line for baritone saxophone. It's short, but punchy, so would provide a bit of light relief in an outdoor setting or a concert of film and TV music.
