Capriccio in B-flat, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work, first performed at age 19 when his brother Johann Jacob travelled to become an oboist in the army of Charles XII of Sweden. The 12-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. Dr. Marcellus has dedicated his arrangement to the memory of the late Steve Witser, his former student and colleague who was Principal Trombonist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In his arrangement Marcellus has split the music into a two 3-part Trombone choirs each with two tenor Trombones and a bass Trombone. The work is separated into six sections titled: 1. Arioso: Adagio - His friends try to persuade him not to undertake the journey 2. Andante - His friends tell him of the various misfortunes that may befall him abroad 3. Adagiosissimo - The general lament of his friends 4. Andante con moto - His friends come, since they see that it must be, and take leave of him 5. Posthorn Aria 6. Fugue in Imitation of the Posthorn.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792283). British composer John Frith has written an exiting new work; Hot Pursuit for Trumpet (parts in C and B-flat), Trombone and Piano for virtuoso performers. The work of about 5 minutes in length is dedicated to Professor John Marcellus of the Eastman School of Music and was premiered at the school in 2010 during a visit by the composer. Hot Pursuit is composed in an A-B-A format with a lyrical middle section flanked by a fast section marked with giant leaps, supersonic scales and sharp attacks. This work can add a big boost to your next recital.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792072). Manny Albam's 1983 virtuoso work for Trombones and String Quartet is in three movements. It was commissioned by Dr. John Marcellus and premiered at the Eastman School of Music.The first movement is an Allegro, dissonant and strident, with the Trombone soloist alternating between high and low registers, with lyrical and technical passages. The strings act as the glue that holds it all together.The second movement is a lyrical Adagio. The third and final movement is an Allegro using arpeggios going from low to high alternating with staccato patterns.This work is appropriate for a virtuoso Trombone soloist and string quartet and about 15 minutes in length.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811040). Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.
