You are taught to group into the 4 basic functions--Lead--Harmony--Counter--Mush (background). Inside each are countless variations plus the voicing of each to the others- Next is the harmonic voicing by raising or lowering one chordal tone an octave. There are huge choices now with all the possibilities. You will be guided thru a 2 chorus chart for a new Middle School Band--advanced beginners--of a simple tune. You will use a timeline and plot the functions on it. The idea is WHO PLAYS WHAT AND FOR HOW LONG. You are guided along the way. Learning to hear IN YOUR HEAD is constantly stressed. Harmony, orchestration, counterpoint or anything else is taught except how to find many, many voicing possibilities and how to use a structure to put it all together. This is done with no notes--none--it's about logic and using your ideas in the best way to use your ideas to beat advantage- Percussion is added to your completed score. All the charts, graphs and other fill in examples makes order out of all the details so you can concentrate on one thing at a time without losing sight of the structure of the completed work.

This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This is an alto sax feature ballad. The melody is full and rich and could make you think of Johnny Hodges. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This is a simple 12 bar boogie for string orchestra that is fun to play and will let the players have a good time while they perform. There is nothing past an eighth note---no hemidemiquavers--..-The Heritage Series is written to be easy to play and easy to listen to. They all have familiar tunes, sound full, have easy ranges and involve nothing more complicated than an eight note. The object is to produce music and not to display technique. The harmonies, lines and logical counterpoints make these arrangements play well with modest technique. Markings are at minimum to keep things simple. String Bass and Piano must be used to make these arrangements work. The optional acoustic guitar (NOT ELECTRIC) will help the rhythm section. Electric bass could be substituted. If you use an electric bass player, sometimes they can be converted to an upright bass or cello player player( –a devious but legal way to get more players in your school orchestra). There is a 3rd Violin part that is really a treble clef viola part if you have no viola players, or to bolster what you have.

The harmonic structure for the solos is indicated and is limited so the soloists must think in lines, not just a lot of notes. You must use claves full time---no claves--no Latin Music. Intonation and a relaxed feel are needed to make this swing. If there are no solos, skip letter E/EE and go to F for the 2 bar chase solos, into the cascade, rhythm section solo, quiet interlude to sign. etc.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

It’ funky 2 beat and make you want to clap your hands on 2 & 4. Fun to play, younger players can do it and learn. It usually works to have the horn players that are not playing in the first part of the chat clap their hands over their head on 2 and 4. This will get the people into it. This is a simple funky 2 beat and should be kept that way. Piano has dissonant afterbeats--should be soft.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere.
