It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.

Piano Duo - 2 pianos, 4 hands. Surrender, Between the Octaves was the piece that was composed first in the suite. It exposes a simple call to return to the beginning, to return to a pure act of listening. This note..ah, now that note.. oh. This is how the piece was written - one note at a time. Listening from within a space (its original title) of resonance, of edges and meetings, of disappearances and repetitions that reflect on this gentle body of notes. There is a slow hearing that may, or may not create a tone-journey.Names of all the movements in the suite Between the Octaves in the right order are Initiate, Surrender, Thread, Curve, Encircle, Ritualise, Ignite. The whole suite follows a long line from movement 1 to movement 7. However, individual pieces are well suited to be played alone too. Piano Duo is ideally two Steinway grands, otherwise, whatever is available. An enjoyment of the tensions and relationships generated between the two instruments: grand-upright, upright-electronic keyboard is to be explored as a positive. Each piece creates its own world in the suite and can be part of smaller subgroups taken from the suite, in any combination, but the order of the pieces needs to be maintained if more than one is played. Here is a taste of the background to the musical world of this 53 minute compositional suite. During a reflective time I read the following: The whole philosophy of dharma art (Buddhist art) is that you don't try to be artistic, but you just approach objects as they are, and the message comes through automatically. (Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, from 'True Perception The Path of Dharma Art.' Shambhala 2008, p.133.) The 'objects as they are' became the 'octaves as they are'. As the pieces were composed the octaves had a centring and clarifying role that allowed other material to circulate around or play against them. They acted as pivots, repetitions, drones, ostinati, pointillist nodes, pedals, melodic features, struts, harmonic turnpikes, breathing spaces, bass lines: musical imperatives. The octaves called the musical shots most of the time. When the music pulled a semitone up or down and away from the octaves (as it did quite often) it was especially telling in the context of the ringing spaces the octaves were creating. I became interested in the subtle dislocation that two pianos could provide. By dislocation I mean a degree of tension between the natural acoustics of the two instruments in the room and the players idiosyncrasies as musicians. The whole point of this work was to examine the nature of my syntax, grammar, and compositional thinking. The title demanded one thing above all: what notes am I going to use between these octaves?? My choice of notes was derived in most instances from the tempo, pitch, and rhythm of the initial octaves at the beginning of each piece alongside the individual word titles that I set out to explore as musical images. The audio was developed from Sibelius software, via MIDI to Logic samples of a Steinway grand piano.

Roger Peterson used the text Acts 12 : 1-19 in an inspiring sermon - BELIEVING PRAYER. James had been killed, and Herod, grandson of Herod the Great, who had spoken to the Wise Men, put Peter in chains and had him heavily guarded so he could be executed after the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. The early church prayed, and prayed for Peter, and an angel lead Peter out and he at first thought it was a dream. When he finally realized he was free, he knocked and knocked on doors until a faithful girl named Rhoda let him join in what would be his long journey of spreading the Gospel. The names of the kings passed down through tradition are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar. The number three in the title stems from the fact that there were three separate gifts given to Jesus: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn was composed for a Christmas pageant at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where Hopkins taught music. It was the first Christmas carol originating from the United States to achieve widespread popularity. Israel'sdeliverer is near, proclaiming peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, leadingIsrael back to Jerusalem. The New Testament likewise speaks of deliverance frombondage – bondage from sin, and healing of the breach between God and humanity. It isthrough the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus that this deliverance isaccomplished. In both cases, there is cause for great joy.Musically, movement from the more subdued preface (part 1) to the festive Latin groove(part 2) conveys the transition from journey to jubilation.The present rendition, written for SATB choir and piano with optional flute and oboemarks the latest evolution in the work's arrangement history. The originalaccompaniment included guitar, bass, drum, flute and electric violin. However, in 2009,through a collaboration with bassist/arranger, Perry Orfanella, a full orchestral score wasdeveloped. Most recently, in order to make the piece more accessible to church choirsand other choral groups, Phil Sims (musician/arranger and partner of Imagine MusicPublishing) reduced the orchestral score and completed the present arrangement forpiano and SATB choir.

Run time is about 20 minutes. The work could be expanded by the inclusion of readings between the songs. The download contains the full score plus vocal sheets and the separate optional recorder part for The Shepherds' Journey.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor.
